AIBU to think lots of engagements are not "work"?

Just reading the Court Circular and I am struck once again by the reality that many engagements can not remotely be called work.
So just looking at January so it is clear I am not cherry picking over many months, there are the following engagements.

  1. Anne went to a Dinner with the Caledonian Hunt
  2. The Duke of Kent attended a carol service
  3. Duchess of Gloucester, Patron, the Arts Society, today held a Meeting via telephone with Dr. Florian Schweizer (Chief Executive). So basically a phone call.
  4. Anne attended lunch at the Royal Yachting Association.

It is not even the time of year to attend Film Premiers, tennis matches, football matches and theatre premiers.

If it’s such an easy life, why didn’t H&M stay?
according to you, they would have oodles of time for the onerous task of running Archewell, turning up to film premieres and touting for business at the same time etc.

The mental gymnastics on this thread are hilarious. Of course the engagements o the opening post are not work. Let's come up with more subservient crap

Service
Dedication
Duty
Work ethic
Hard work

So what's 'work' then? Give us your definition.

ThighMistress · 20/01/2023 18:31

I thought the same. Apparently Meghan bailed on a royal garden party because it was boring - according to the OP something like that would have been easy and fun fun fun.

Frankly I couldn’t do a rf job in a million years. I’m a very polite person, but even my jaw would dislocate with suppressed yawning. Royal Variety Performance anyone?!

Blossomtoes · 20/01/2023 18:33

There was also the comment the Duchess of Sussex made on tour in Fiji that she couldn’t believe she wasn’t getting paid for it.

DewinDwl · 20/01/2023 18:33

Oh IcedPurple do try harder. It seems for many of you this thread is about thwarting and antimonarchy poster and not about the topic on the OP. Anyway....

Think about about person caring for your elderly relatives, fighting to be able to take their legal mininum breaks and to get paid for work travelling time.

The trading standards person in your Council and that cannot and will never be able to afford pension contributions

the many mumsnetters that say they can't afford childcare.

The childcare workers leaving the profession because they can't live on minimum wage.

But yeah phone calls and meals with the yatch club.

So basically, any job that is well paid and not unpleasant is not really work?

Blossomtoes · 20/01/2023 18:35

That person works for a local authority and has access to one of the best pension schemes available.

toomuchlaundry · 20/01/2023 18:37

Do you read anything else apart from the Court Circular?

shadowwalk · 20/01/2023 18:37

OP you remind me of the type of people who think travelling for work is a jolly.

Try harder. Disingenuous is just so boring.

Oh and it doesn't matter how good the pension scheme is. If you cannot afford the monthly contributions you are not on the scheme.

Lots of trashy entertainment publications.

Lazy personal insults and an inability to construct an argument that doesn't involve them is even more boring.

You are absolutely right. Even if they would rather be at home eating toast, the fact is they are being paid huge amounts of money to go to a few events. How many of these events are they doing? How much are they paid? They also have staff writing speeches, sorting out what they wear, driving them and advising them on what to say or do. It is hardly work in the normal sense of the word.

Is TV presenter a job because you've just described a lot of the things that are done to scaffold that job. Lorraine gets paid very well.

TeenDivided · 20/01/2023 18:49

People like to have people come and open things, or speak at a dinner, or a high profile name to help them raise money. If you get a Z list celebrity to do it, they charge. It's work.
If you manage to get a Royal, they have a higher profile, more experience so will probably do the event better than the Z lister, and it will be free at the point of use (like the NHS).

The Princess Royal visited my workplace a few years ago - it was part of a whistle stop tour of my local area. She literally had 6 engagements that day and had to travel over quite a rural area to attend them all. Boring stuff like community centres, schools, drop in centres etc. No fancy dinners or easy zoom calls.

She was engaged, interested and had clearly found out or been briefed on at least a little about each of the places. She was absolutely lovely and much more petite IRL than I realised!

babsanderson · 20/01/2023 18:54

The Royals in the examples are not making speeches at Dinners, I left anything like that out. They are simply attending a lunch at a leisure organisation.

King Charles a nd Camilla came to.Bolton today , i.was going to.go but it's very icy and cold today in Bolton from what I saw on the Bolton news website ,they were driven to.the town hall inn a luxurious car ,lots of waving at the thousands of onlookers ,ushered into the town hall lots of smiling and chatting to local dignitaries, charity workers some chosen svhool.children ,I think they stayed an hour maybe two ,it's not exactly racing .

x2boys · 20/01/2023 18:57

DewinDwl · 20/01/2023 18:59

IcedPurple yawn. I can carry on til the cows come home. Because you and I and everyone on this thread knows what work is, and it's not cutting ribbons, no matter how much you dislike the OP. So...

My neurologist, who trained for literally decades and works all hours of the day, who has saved my life and many others

The educational psychologist, heavily in debt with a student loan, drowning in paperwork, seeing kids that have waited for their assessment for years; who loves her job and is changing lives for the better every day.

The binman who loves the crewe he works with and prays his shoulder injury won't play up before retirement.

The retail worker who hates her job but it's the only local one with hours that fit around childcare. But she gets up every fucking morning and does her job.

Etc Etc
