Strangest bits in Spare…

i haven’t quite finished it yet but I wanted to read a thread about some of the weirder bits of Spare, and I haven’t seen a thread where people were discussing those without the ‘H&M’ vs the rest of the RF debate. There are definitely some parts which have made me really question why they were included, and I was wondering if anyone else had any similar thoughts.

The inclusion of the imagery of the poppy fields, and how heroin funds the Taliban. Fair enough. We all know that. The rest of the book is one long ode to posh people taking drugs. Does Prince Harry think the cocaine he takes is gently knitted by fairies and delivered to him by unicorns? Do the drugs he takes not contribute to war and terrorism and misery across the rest of the world (and indeed misery and crime in the UK, where he is 5th in line to be monarch!) I found this quite a strange passage and I was wondering if anyone else had any thoughts, or am I just over thinking it?

Elizabeth Arden cream. ‘Mummy’s lips’. ‘Todger’. Why? But really, why? Why was this included? Why did anyone think it or commit it to paper, and then publish it? Why did I read it? Why am I typing it here? ARGH.

What he actually thinks the relationship between the royal family and the press should actually be. Only reporting true things? Someone had a photo of him taking cocaine. Dressed as a nazi. Calling his colleague a ‘P*ki’. He wasn’t happy, but it was all true. Should journalists not be allowed to report true things? Or should they only be reporting things he wants them to report? Does Andrew get to choose that too? What about everyone else?

What the actual royal family should look like. This was mind bending. He seems to be perfectly happy with the idea of the monarchy, an institution which is predicated on the idea that they’re inherently superior to the rest of us, and that’s their birth right, but seems to massively struggle to apply that to himself and William. If a monarchy is the best system, why shouldn’t the heir be treated differently to the spare? (I don’t believe it is the best system and wish we could abolish them all but I don’t understand how one can believe one but not the other!).

Anyone else have any interesting thoughts?

I haven’t read the book but I’ve come across this on YouTube, supposedly from the book. In 2020 Harry is sitting under a tree he and Diana used to sit by. He closed his eyes and he heard ‘mummy’s’ voice saying “I love you Harry, I will always be with you. You should be King. Not him, you”.

Shakespeare couldn’t have have done better to set the scene of a deluded, insanely jealous younger brother. 😯

Doesn't it go further. It's the pregnancy test on the "nightstand" (so Americanised) next to the box containing a lock of Diana's hair.

I haven’t read it (disclaimer!) but was there something in it about her leaving it there as lazy Harry had fallen asleep while she took the test?

Surely he could have kept his eyes open for the few minutes it takes to do a pregnancy test?

Ridemeginger · 16/01/2023 13:19

Yes, he fell asleep. Lazy git, can't be bothered to stay awake for a potentially momentous occasion.

Mind you, I'm surprised they didn't film it. His proposal was apparently filmed.

2bazookas · 16/01/2023 13:19

Watch The Late Show (USA, Harry and Colbert) , penis discussion, and all becomes clear. Penis talk went down a storm with the US studio audience.
A tactic used by Trump, re pussy and periods. President or Prince, in USA you can't go wrong with a bit of naughty-boy sexual titillation.

Spare was written for his biggest sales target, the USA. A combination of Mens Locker Room, machismo, killing, soap opera tragidrama.

I'd stored the surrogacy rumours under 'definitely not possible' partly because I'm not sure the RF would have been able to include them in the line of succession.

But, both the birth stories are just weird.

Portland running out of entonox, H saying she had two injections in her spine... does he mean the epidural needed to be resited... or does he genuinely mean she had two injections? How on earth was an older first time mother able to leave hospital an hour after delivery and post-induction and epidural? Surely the Portland would be taking no risks with a Royal birth?

Also the suggestion that H could see the cord was round Archie's neck and thinks they'd do an emergency c-section? You're not doing a caesarian when the baby's head is already delivered - what does he think they do? Yank it back through the birth canal.

Why are they eating Nandos in a hospital that has superb catering on demand?

If you go through the stories and consider a hypothetical surrogacy he's actually made it look far more credible.

Was it epidural or water injection?

TangledWebOfDeception · 16/01/2023 13:22

It’s clear he was deeply traumatised by the death of his mother. Which is entirely understandable of course. And I have all the sympathy in the world for that young boy. A lot of what he does and says sounds or looks a lot like arrested development. He comes across like an angry 12 year old lashing out at everyone, wanting everything his way and wanting someone to fix all the horrible things that just can’t be fixed.

He does need to sort himself out. He’ll poison everyone with this bitterness including his much-loved children. Sort yourself out, Harry, and do right by your children (right up until they’re well into young adulthood). Maybe then you can presume to lecture others on how they are raising their children.

I’ve said it before, I really don’t think therapy is the answer for him. I don’t think continually brooding over the past/his grievances will heal him; my conviction is that he’s the kind of man who’ll find purpose in action, not in talking/thinking.

What the actual fuck. Such a deluded fool. I can't.

VolcanicAshStorm · 16/01/2023 13:26

Another also very surprised how he talks about women, they are either Mother figures (even this TJ friend in Africa is turned into a mother figure who he quite creepily calls mom even though they seem not too far apart in age), potential girlfriends/shags (he even uses the word conveyor belt), disparaged quite viciously (poor Pat the matron, Rebecca Brookes, Angela) or idealised beyond reason (Diana, Meghan etc.)

Sunbird24 · 16/01/2023 13:27

The Mail article quoted upthread about Charles & Diana ensuring that H was included in everything W was doing, inc first day at Eton etc does seem significant to me. Siblings should always learn that sometimes one gets something the other doesn’t, or they get different things, and that’s ok because it all balances out in the end. You can see how it might lead to a bit of resentment for the older sibling to always have the younger thrust into everything they do, and a sense of entitlement for the younger that this will always be the case.

That said, I also remember feeling mightily hard done by that my older sibling got larger portions of dinner, a later bedtime or more pocket money than I did, just because they were born first! I’ve been over it for decades though…

No way, that’s nuts.

Are you sure that’s not a spoof.
Im going to need to read it at some point, aren’t I?

Maybe I’ll try and get a hold of the pdf that’s doing the rounds

TangledWebOfDeception · 16/01/2023 13:29

@PicturesOfDogs there’ll be copies in the charity shops next week, I should think.

Op - thank you for making this thread! It’s made me laugh so much whilst I recover from strep! 🥰👍🏼😂

Such great insights! Real food for thought!

The poster who said ‘It's like reading 'How to make everyone else wrong' by Homer Simpson.’ Spot on 😂

Regarding the surreal birthing stories, I read it as him being so self absorbed, that even a momentous occasion like that is all about what a lad he is, how integral he was to the process, and how cool and unstuffy and ‘playfully joyful’ his wife (who seems to be an extension of him) was.

VolcanicAshStorm · 16/01/2023 13:30

With regard to who pays for the drugs - It is pretty reliable knowledge that Harry and William did not pay for anything out partying. Everything was comped or organised for them. At these night clubs they go to - they would have a table in the VIP area and everything for the two of them was free (on the house). Harry himself admits he never carried any money or means of paying for things. So the drugs - I imagine the same, he asks he gets.

TangledWebOfDeception · 16/01/2023 13:30

It says a lot that one really can’t tell anymore whether it’s likely to be a spoof or the real thing!

REP22 · 16/01/2023 13:31

The whole thing is awful, on so many levels. I am glad that the late Queen and DofE didn't live to see this.

What I find hard to stomach is that time shortly after the Queen had passed away. When H&M did their impromptu 'walkabout' with William and Catherine, knowing full well what they had already committed to print. Awful.

I understand that Harry's book deal was for three books, so goodness knows what he's saving for the next two.

I would quite like to write a parody, maybe called (over)Share, but I daresay I'd end up in the Tower.

The whole thing is cruel and calculating and designed to wound most deeply and personally the closest members of Harry's own family.

No hugs from Charles. No physical affection. It's simply just not true.

I don't recall any point in the book where he claimed his father never hugged him.

He said he wasn't hugged when he was told that Diana had died. He mentions his father not being totally comfortably with physical affection and struggling to express emotions.

People cam be uncomfortable with hugs and still give them at times.

Having read the book, I thought Charles came put quite well. Well meaning and caring but somewhat hapless, which we all knew anyway.

Is it any wonder William ditched him at school, the first opportunity he could without his parents interfering.

ChristmasRoses · 16/01/2023 13:44

hatred of smugness, fakery and all things posh

He's not holed up in a two-bed semi now is he?

Just imagine for a moment how massively posh and fake his lavish his $14.65m Montecito mansion is. That he chose to live in.

Does he think we are all completely stupid?

You forgot the bit about and 'making money' from it all.

Does he think we are all completely stupid?

The issue is he doesn't think.
He's not capable of it.
