The royal family

What if William abdicated?

Just thinking about what would happen if William decided to step down from the line of succession, and take his children out of it too.
Who would take over? Harry is next , but assume he wouldn’t want it for himself or his children. If he did, he would be a disaster and it would probably create huge ructions.
Anne when Charles dies would be too old. I don’t think her children are in the line of succession and there’s no way they would want it or be up to it. So then it would pass to Andrew, who would also be too old and not fit for it either. What on earth would happen? There would be no one fit for the task or wiling to take it on. The monarchy would collapse.

so it is William, his kids
Harry, his kids
Andrew, his kids
Edward, his kids
Anne, her kids, her grandkids

andrew then his kids then surely there children?

it doesn’t skip backwards then to Edward, I don’t think that’s how line of succession works

The change to end male primogeniture applied to those born after the qualifying date (which was he date that Commonwealth agreement was announced, not the date it was enacted in each realm)

Line of succession is:

Wales - William, George, Charlotte, Louis
Sussex - Harry, Archie, Lilli
York - Andrew, Beatrice, Siena, Eugenie, August
Wessex - Edward, James, Louise
then - Anne, Peter, Isla, Savannah, Zara, Mia, Lena, Louis

(then it goes on to the descendants of Princess Margaret)

From Harry's comment about how he and Meghan would be better at the job than William and Kate, I think he very much does want to be King.

The British public would never accept those two now though. If William abdicated, it would probably be the end of the Monarchy.

Harry is next

He's not next. George, Charlotte and Louis are next. Then Harry.

I think if there were that sequence of events then that would be the time to 'knock it all on the head' and become a republic.

Ah but what if the queen isn't dead , just beamed back up to the mother ship and they are all really lizards sent to control us by the CIA/FBI ?

Omg this would be amazing. Some entertainment for us plebs.

A load of nonsense more like.

My compliments Smile

Really, the people saying things like who they'd "prefer" to be next or "we should get a president" - it's not like reality TV. There's a line of succession, like it or not, and that's the way it is unless parliament (I think - happy to be corrected) changes it.

ItsABrandNewDay · 07/01/2023 09:54

For those saying William couldn't abdicate on behalf of his children, is there a reason why not? When Nicholas II abdicated I'm sure he did it on behalf of his son as well as Russia was left without a monarch?

I'll take a stab at this - Britain and Russia are different countries with different laws? Just a guess...🤔

startfresh · 07/01/2023 09:57

It was today I realised that James is above Louise in the succession line (never really thought about it) because they were born prior to the announcement before George's birth. It's interesting that the line to the throne will still have a mix between male heir priority and no sex priority for quite a long while, yet. Although the Tindalls were born after so the girls are ahead of the boy.

So basically Lady Louise is the last female overlooked in preference for a younger male heir.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 07/01/2023 10:00

Abdication would require an Act of Parliament, and the Act would lay out the terms of the abdication, including the impact on William's children, born or unborn.

He had a gun to his head when he abdicated. His abdication was to end the rule of all Tsars not just him.

Different countries

Different situation

Do you really believe there’s loads similarities between the 2 situations?

Can you imagine if H was King, he'd be just like Henry the Eighth, well the ego anyway

LaMarschallin · 07/01/2023 10:08

It was during a revolution aimed at removing the ruling family. It may not have been legal but, at the time, nobody was cooly debating that.
I suspect Nicholas felt that abdicating on his own and his son's behalf was the only way of trying to save both their lives.

Surely it applies to everyone regardless of when they were born?

How is Harry even still in line for the throne? He should be removed. The thought of him as the head of state is absolutely appalling. I know it's extremely unlikely he would ever get there because there's 4 potential Monarchs ahead of him, but still...

No, it doesn’t, exactly as PP explained 🙄

SheilaFentiman · 07/01/2023 10:26

Surely it applies to everyone regardless of when they were born?

Nope, as with most laws, it’s not retroactive. So if punching someone in was once classed as assault and this changed to ABH in 1984, a fight in 1983 could only lead to an assault charge, not an ABH charge.

(dates made up for illustration)

SheilaFentiman · 07/01/2023 10:27

Harry is still in line for the throne in the same way Andrew is. It’s a bloodline of succession. There’s little point in an act of Parliament or whatever to change it, as he will never be king anyway.

startfresh · 07/01/2023 10:40

Yeah definitely only applied to births going forward. Hence why Anne is so low, beneath her brothers and their families.

They didn't just reshuffle the whole line of succession.

Gosh, I think you may be right. Here's a picture of Harry with the Queen!
