Really?
Another statement probably way off the truth.

H is reported as saying they were amazed when they visited W&C in Kensington Palace and saw the art work, the furniture etc etc.

Whereas HE had to kit out Notts Cott with Ikea stuff that M bought using her CC. (Harrods is just down the road as is John Lewis .)

Has he forgotten the £millions of tax payers' money that was used to tart up Nott Cott?

And that he's now had to pay back as they buggered off the US soon afterwards?

Yet another warped statement, oozing with unfounded jealousy.

why s Oprah not doing an interview with him in the states?

I’m guessing she is distancing herself from them now.

CulturePigeon · 06/01/2023 09:50

He's just an embarrassment.

OP - I understand it wasn't (the perfectly lovely) Notts Cottage, but Frogmore Cottage on the Windsor estate which cost £2m to do up, on their demands. Prince Charles has since insisted that they repay that money, and I think they've been made to do so and quite right, too. Of course, this has made them victims and much whingeing ensued.

We'll never know the full details but from what I've read/seen of the dreadful Netflix series (only excerpts...I'm not a masochist...) it was Meghan who was outraged at being offered such a horrible, slummy little hovel as Notts Cottage.

They are unbelievable, in every sense of the word.

queenofarles · 06/01/2023 09:50

there are stories about how stingy Harry is, he refused to pay for one of his girls friends plane ticket , wise of Meghan to buy IKEA instead of the good stuff he can afford,

Serenster · 06/01/2023 09:51

Charles and William live insanely extravagant lifestyles and always have, without comment.

Clearly you never read the papers…

MaggieFS · 06/01/2023 09:51

I hope they consulted mumsnet to maximise their trip (or delivery fee- did they actually go to IKEA?). No mention this far of food storage bags, bag clips or tea lights which seems a bit remiss.

Batcountry8 · 06/01/2023 09:52

Going by this do you think they would have had to get the incense/candles for St George's Chapel (when she complained about the church smell) from Poundland?

StarsSand · 06/01/2023 09:52

OhMonDieux · 06/01/2023 08:05

Whatever Charles did or didn't do 'right' in his life (and God knows we all make mistakes) he doesn't deserve this.

He must feel he is in that special place in Hell.

I cannot imagine having one of my adult DCs behave like this with the whole world watching, when their dad is in their late 70s, maybe only with 5-10 years of life left, and having seen both his parents die within a year.

Oh, and there is also the small matter of being crowned king as well.

What makes you think Charles will die in his 70s? His parents and grandmother all lived well into their 90s.

It's not like he's had a hard life.

And he did terrible things to Diana, marrying a teenager he didn't care about just so she'd churn out heirs for him.

What's so bad about Ikea if you've got a rough and tumble lifestyle that needs furniture with a bit of give and 'collapsibility'?

You could do yourself a mischief during a bout of family fisticuffs if there are antique solid oak carved chairs in the way.

I think cheap 'n' cheerful giant bean bags - and a Billy bookcase - are the way to go actually.

😂

I was really hoping for his sake that this morning there would have have been a statement from him confirming the Spanish book was actually a spoof. I actually think this book will break his marriage, it has had the complete opposite effect to what they were hoping for,Meg will not like this at all how they have both come across imo.

There's no way she would have let that book go out without going over it with a fine tooth comb.

This is on her, just as much.

The money they repaid included an unspecified amount for rent for an unspecified period.

Whats the story about the church smell?

BadShepherd · 06/01/2023 09:56

@RedToothBrush i think you’re being very generous with your assumption he might’ve needed somewhere to store his books…

longwayoff · 06/01/2023 09:57

They had to spend their own money? Outrageous. Come back Harry and Meghan, we subjects ache to throw some more money at such a deserving pair.

Serenster · 06/01/2023 09:57

The point I am making, which I stand by is the fact that the OP suggested that the art belongs to the nation, who in turn have to pay to be able to access it. I questioned why that was.

Largely because it’s not free to store, preserve and display art securely and appropriately. Large running costs are involved, and you need plenty of floor space, curators and security space.

The National gallery for example is free to the public but absolutely not free to run. It’s operating costs in FY2021 were £30m.

ghjklo · 06/01/2023 09:59

@RunRunRunRunRunaway google saves your credit card details in google pay, or similr in apple pay, it's not inconceivable that she could have used this, or had a credit card available to her.

milti · 06/01/2023 09:59

Maybe she should have flogged her 56000 quid engagement dress and bought a more expensive sofa

Beowulfa · 06/01/2023 09:59

On the topic of art belonging to the nation, one year at Open House I visited the Government Art Collection (for free) where you can go behind the scenes to find out about how the nation's art heritage is stored and conserved: artcollection.culture.gov.uk/

Neither Harry nor Meghan are great adverts for the very expensive schools they attended, are they? Being a bit thick and not having any self-awareness is not a winning combination.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 06/01/2023 09:54

Whats the story about the church smell?

Apparently she complained that St George's chapel smelt old and musty and wanted candles to make it fragrant on her wedding day...I don't know about anyone else but I love the smell of old buildings, it's like smelling history..

JoyPeaceHealth · 06/01/2023 10:00

God, everything he says is such a distortion. 2.4m spent doing up their house which is not really a cottage at all, and he is griping that they had to pay for their own furniture.

longwayoff · 06/01/2023 10:01

I feel sorry for Meghan. Now everyone knows just how utterly petulant and dim he is but she's got to live with him. They should sack the useless therapist and hire a Nanny for him.

AlmondBake · 06/01/2023 10:01

Whatever Charles did or didn't do 'right' in his life (and God knows we all make mistakes) he doesn't deserve this.

Oh I don't know. The way he and Camilla treated Diana? He probably does.

hauntedvagina · 06/01/2023 10:01

I think the question here that everyone has overlooked is, did they manage to leave IKEA without buying any tea lights?

RedToothBrush · 06/01/2023 10:02

BadShepherd · 06/01/2023 09:56

Hahaha true!

Still stick by the Father Dougal trapped in IKEA comparison though!

Frogmore cottage was not done up at tax payer's expense (well, other than the Royal's wealth comes from a century of tax exemptions)

The point is that there was a steady drip drip of H&M's expenses from "royal sources" and they were heavily criticised whilst Charles and William live insanely extravagant lifestyles and always have, without comment. Even the Queen who was well known for be relatively modest in spending commented on the extravagance of Charles' household.

I’m bored with all this already. But this is a very reasonable point and probably the point really. Attention being diverted from the rest of the family. Don’t look at us look at them and their spending with their American ways.

StallionHarold · 06/01/2023 10:02

He also forgets that the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester had agreed to leave their huge apartment (the biggest and apparently nicest) at KP and that it was going to be completely renovated for him and Megan- until they said they did not want it and wanted to live at Windsor

This is grubby of me. But I'd always accepted that as truth - but in light of everything Harry's said, I'm now wondering if they were genteely evicted - a kind of 'get outta my palace'

We could really do with a new series of The Windsors covering all this
