Not about whose is right and who is wrong.

Do you think the early release of the book in Spanish was an accident or deliberate?

OP posts:
good96 · 05/01/2023 21:26

Deliberate for sure.

Rowthe · 05/01/2023 21:27

Accident.

I think there was some planned releases with the Guardian and then they messed up in Spain so then wonky translation leaks have overtaken the spotlight compared to the stories they wanted in the media.

JustDrama · 05/01/2023 21:30

I'm on the fence. With the planned interviews coming out on Sunday it's kind of takes the wind out of the interview sales surely.

queenofarles · 05/01/2023 21:43

I’m wondering about this too, more so could it be a spoof copy? I seriously can’t believe all these stories , the stallion sex and slaying of 25 Talibans, cocaine and something to do with penis frost bites??
but if it’s true but lost in translation then why not release the English version already ,
this is just too embarrassing.

BurningTheToast · 05/01/2023 21:45

I'm pretty sure the publishers didn't sell the serial rights to the papers, partly because if all the juicy bits were in there then people wouldn't buy the book.

It could have gone on sale accidentally although the boxes arriving in bookshops will have been marked with embargo notices and you'd have to be a bit dim not to notice.

I was a bookseller for years and there was this level of fuss about the last Harry Potter coming out. I still opened a box when they were delivered and flicked through.

Newspapers will have been asking around to get an early copy for a book with this level of public interest. I wouldn't have done it with HP as it would spoil it for kids, but for this book, for the right money, and if it wasn't traceable back to me, I'd possibly have passed a copy on.

WillyAndHarold · 05/01/2023 21:50

Accident, and a really unlucky one

If there was a deliberate leak, it would have been an English-language copy, not something that the tabloids would have to translate themselves

As it is, all the most risible bits have come out, possibly with slightly different emphasis because of the double translation (firstly in to Spanish, then back to English). Not good.

Have Harry's interview's been pre-recorded?

If so, they're going to hit bum notes too, as they'll seem really dreary

JustDrama · 05/01/2023 22:04

Im assuming pre recorded as they are showing bits of it already.

mrsmarmalade12 · 05/01/2023 22:08

I wondered this. I can't see how it's deliberate to be honest, surely book sales will suffer with it all in the press?

LittleBearPad · 05/01/2023 22:11

Guardian deliberate
Spanish release was an accident. The dodgy translation back into English is making it quite comic which no one would intend.

EasterIssland · 05/01/2023 22:13

Deliberate. Tomorrow is 3 wise men => Spanish Christmas Day. So they could make a bit of extra cash by releasing it early and people buying it to give it as a present.

I think it was at the same a mistake of workers trying to achieve the above

OnceUponAWar · 05/01/2023 23:55

Hanlon's razor: "never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity."

In other words: the likelihood of one bookshop employee out of tens of thousands who will be involved in distributing this title fucking up and putting the goods on display early is rather high. It's the same basic "wrong date" mistake as when you turn up to a meeting on Wednesday only to be informed this is not taking place until next week. Which, I'm willing to bet, at least one person on this thread has done before (I most certainly have).

The complexity of something like an orchestrated operation compares to the above seems rather unlikely. Not saying it could never theoretically happen - just that the statistical probability of the former is astronomically higher.

Quite probably (I'm not in the publishing industry, this is pure statistics) a lot of titles get put out on the shelves of some shop or another before their official release date. The only difference here being: "Spare" by PH was highly anticipated and people were going to notice, whereas "The Mystery of The Porcelain Elephant - A Random Detective Novel" by Random McRandom" may go undiscovered because nobody even cares enough to know its publication date.

Long story short: in case GRRM ever does finish "Winds of Winter" the same is likely to happen.

Hmmmm.... interesting theory.

Seriously, I doubt it. But it would be fucking hilarious if it was a spoof.

LadyVictoriaSponge · 06/01/2023 00:01

Omid Scobie would have let us know it was a spoof, he has been very quiet…….

MoscowMules · 06/01/2023 00:03

I'm awaiting tin foil hat conspiracy theorists to come along and say it was the Spanish royal family who have done this , distant cousin of Charles, still the firm by proxy.

😂😂

Revenge for Henry VIII breaking away from the Catholic Church? 😅

Guardian deliberate
Spanish release was an accident.

I agree. I can't imagine that the publishers are pleased about the Spanish fuck up.

notangelinajolie · 06/01/2023 00:09

Deliberate. Google translate is priceless.

If we take it as read that Harry was already rehearsed for these questions, then trailers have been about wanting his family back. So they release William hitting him on a Thursday so in will be on the front cover of the newspapers on Friday and Saturday. Then Harry is filmed saying he just wants them all to get on and be more understanding towards each other - it makes him sound forgiving and kind to move past William's violence. People are in a positive frame of mind towards Harry and are more likely to buy.

I can't believe how much I'm getting interested in this. I wonder if you're right and it's a fake or something?? It just seems too crazy to be true. First the stallion thing, but then the frostbite. Surely not. One could not make this stuff up!!

He's said similar before about killing, just without a number.

The circumcision/frostbite I hope is spoof - if not then it's pretty grim.

Boulshired · 06/01/2023 00:28

the Spanish book would have included the Guardian snippet and a spoof book could not have been produced in the time frame.

onlylarkin · 06/01/2023 00:29

The more I think about this, the more I hope it is true.

That would be the ultimate check mate and fuck you to the press.
