Ardern distances herself from Netflix documentary!

“In early March 2019 the prime minister was approached by the Mandela Foundation to participate in a project to develop accessible resources on key attributes of leadership targeted at aspiring young leaders around the world, based off a one-hour interview.

“Originally we were advised the outputs would be printed and digital books, short films and audiobooks.

“The interview was conducted on November 8, 2019. In March 2020 a short book entitled Jacinda Ardern (I Know This to be True) was published based on the interview. Other participants who also had their contributions published based on their interviews included the late US Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the feminist activist Gloria Steinem, the climate campaigner Greta Thunberg and the American basketball player Stephen Curry.

“In March 2021 the Nelson Mandela Foundation advised the prime minister’s office they had secured an agreement with Netflix to broadcast the series of interviews, including the 2019 interview with the prime minister.

“In May this year the prime minister’s office was notified that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex would introduce the series; noting this was nearly two and a half years after the interview had been recorded and permission for its use by the Mandela Foundation had already been provided.

“All communication throughout has been with the foundation (there has been no communications with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex regarding the project).”

Crumbs.

Smart move from Jacinda Ardern. I bet her office investigated whether they had a case to get her interview removed completely.

Unfortunately, two of the others cannot distance themselves from it because they are dead. That leaves Greta whom we all look forward to hearing 🙄

I hope she provides some updates on the climate crisis in Chunga Changa.

😅I almost forgot about that one. They could set up the greatest environfantasist awards together.

'I’m assuming she’s clarifying that H&M were not part of it when she signed up, so she’s not considered to be ‘on their side’.'

Yes it is rather misleading isn't it, suggesting that the Markles have organised the whole thing whereas it seems they just added their names to it unbeknown to the main contributors.

It's funny because they like to go on about being authentic.

H and M are only narrating ? Unless I have misunderstood the programme was ready to go before their involvement.

MarshaMelrose · 21/12/2022 16:25

I read that H&M bought this and then have put their voice-over on it. That's how they got into partnership with the Mandela Foundation for which the MF invited Harry to speak at the UN. So Harry gives money for the documentary and gets an invitation to speak at the UN in return.

It's interesting how the charity circle goes round, isn't it?

That’s interesting .
Given the calibre of people being discussed it’s surprising that it has taken over 3 years to be broadcast.

CocoLux · 21/12/2022 17:08

There's a lot of gushing in some
quarters about what an amazing achievement this is for M&H - turns out they've done a bit of an intro and maybe some voiceovers, nothing more? 'Executive Producer' is a bit meaningless.

onlylarkin · 21/12/2022 19:43

Executive Produxer = money

www.masterclass.com/articles/what-is-an-executive-producer-whats-the-difference-between-an-executive-producer-and-producer

My opinion is that this sat so long is because the Mandela Foundation didn't have or couldnt find the money to produce. I am sure the Covid years did not help either.

While Netflix licensed to show it, it still has to be produced.

Meghan has always been a feminist so this type of program is right up her alley, but we have no way of knowing why H & M decided to become EP on this.

I am sure we will see many more shows and podcasts come put. This is their livelihood now so why wouldn't we?

Their estates will still be managed though.

Coronateachingagain · 21/12/2022 21:53

This is a bad on Ardern's lawyers for not fighting up the conditions of use etc.
such is the world of copyright and business. People learn though. The behaviour is shortlived. Everyone will look at their contracts in that light.

It is also bad for Markle and husband. They are seen as too political and a liability.

Wonder if they will "interview" Oprah as part of their amazing women series 😅. Or Clooney? Or Obama? All staying well away this pair's bandwidth.

Coronateachingagain · 21/12/2022 21:54

*tightening not fighting

This series of documentaries has nothing to do with the Royal Family
A very common criticism of Meghan and Harry on mn has been that they should have left and found the privacy they wanted, (not actually what they said), but now those who criticised them are looking for new areas to find fault. What do you care? They are gone now. They aren’t coming back.

I think its interesting to see how these high profile charities work. I wondered in July when the Mandela Foundation announced they were doing a project about leadership with Archewell so they invited Harry to speak. Turns out it's this project. Archewell bought the project, so they gave money and Harry gets to speak at the UN.

I'm not criticising Harry for doing this because it just seems to be how these charities operate. But I've never seen it so blatant before.

Coronateachingagain · 21/12/2022 23:07

@MarshaMelrose spot on. It is all a business.

That was clear from the start though. They need to keep popping up so they can keep cashing in.

secretpath · 23/12/2022 02:36

If anyone is interested, as I am, in the political and diplomatic dimensions of 'Megxit', in particular since the documentary and in relation to Chinese influence in Commonwealth nations, google an article called 'The trouble with Harry and Meghan' in a US publication called 'The Hill'.

MarshaMelrose · 23/12/2022 03:33

I agree @secretpath . I had cause to visit several Asian countries just before the pandemic and the investment in Africa and Asia by China is scary. Some countries told me that their (corrupt) politicians had told them they were being given things, like new stadiums, but it turned out nothing was given. All yhe money was expected to be paid back or they'd except land instead. Where they could build military bases.

Honestly, people are so complacent bout what us happening in the world, whilst politicians are shouting we need to invest in these poorer countries. The commonwealth is important. We need to look after these countries.

I regularly read on here how intelligent Meghan is. She might be educated but she seems to have very much tunnel vision to me. She certainly had no idea what the commonwealth is about. And harry needs someone to base his personality on. He doesn't know who he is. So if someone presents an idea with any sort of a rationale, o matter how ill thought out, he'll jump on it. He has taken her understanding of the commonwealth as gospel without the wit to research it for himself. Even Netflix took Meghan's word as truth. It's scary.

And she's not finished with the RF and Britain yet. As she said, she doesn't feel better because not all her truth. has been told.

what is your opinion on the article, @secretpath ?

secretpath · 23/12/2022 03:51

Yes, I agree that Meghan was, at best, naive about the nature of the Commonwealth, and now seems to be collaborating with people who are actively hostile to it. I'm not sure why Harry goes along with this, apart from, as you suggest, Melrose, it filling some sort of personal and intellectual void.

I don't believe that Harry and Meghan are actively trying to bring down the RF/monarchy/GB/Commonwealth, but I do believe there are nefarious forces out there that will relish their ill-judged comments and potentially exploit them in ways they seem not to be able to anticipate.

FlairBand · 23/12/2022 04:15

This documentary has strong “Salt Bae lifts the World Cup trophy” vibes to me!

For most real leaders it’s becoming quite clear that H&M’s M.O. is to leech off other people’s work and platform so that they can elevate themselves by association, without actually having to do any work. There appear to be very few depths to which they will not sink to build their brand or their status. I can’t see how this is anything but another example of the same thing.

queenofarles · 23/12/2022 10:41

😂😂, most accurate description of the whole thing.

While I do agree that H&M are very bitter and are willing to destroy everything just to broadcast the message that RF and everything it represents is bad based on their own personal experience .

But The article really lost me when it started talking about The war in the Ukraine, Very tone deaf and xenophobic. Many African countries went through civil conflicts and wars with neighbouring countries for decades ,
some of these countries are finally finding some stability and prosperity , Why should we resent Them for working with China ? these investment in Africa were made years earlier , mostly in agriculture , and petrochemical excavations .

two completely different subjects and if this is the sort of agenda that is being pushed , then consider the commonwealth long dead.

bakalava · 23/12/2022 11:22

There are some excellent ideas put forward on this thread. It is a stock situation of Hollywood brainwashed kitten doing the bidding of the Wizards who stay well hidden behind the curtain.
So many people are destined to sleepwalk through life without understanding anything about it.

fenellavonspurtz · 23/12/2022 11:35

Another silly thread from anti-MM obsessives.

ThighMistress · 23/12/2022 11:49

I agree that for big bucks you have to get into bed with some questionable people. M&H’s Vancouver house was lent to them by someone whose affairs are incredibly opaque.
