The royal family

If you were a royal, but not likely to inherit the crown...

...what would you do and which current member of the royal family is your closest role model?

I think I'd like to be a working royal along the lines of Katherine, Duchess of Kent or Sophie, Countess of Wessex. I'd probably want to champion the less celebrated public sector such as education, social care, health etc.

The non-working royal model is tempting, but I don't mind a bit of pomp and ceremony and the risk of scandal is a bit high. In for a penny, in for a pound I reckon if you're a royal.

I always think it would be nicest to be one of the minor Windsors like Lady Rose or Lady Amelia. You can pursue the career pathway you desire and have family money to fall back on in case it doesn't work out, you can raise your family in peace and anonymity, photographers and the general public leave you alone, and you get all the benefits of royalty and the Windsor name (invited to royal weddings, summer parties at the Royal Academy or Serpentine, on the balcony for the Trooping etc etc) without any of the drawbacks!

I wouldn't want to be a working royal but would suck up the church services etc My parents were all about the academics when I was growing up. In an alternative universe I would have been sporty or into animals.

Duchess of Gloucester - an HRH but nobody recognises her. Live a her tennis & patron of LTA, so rocks up to Wimbledon, Davis Cup etc whenever she wants - how marvellous!

Hbh17 · 23/10/2022 15:52

"Loves her tennis"

ImAvingOops · 23/10/2022 15:56

I'd like to work for the nhs or in a state school but not take the money. It would be lovely to have loads of family money and be able to afford the training to be a midwife or something but not need the salary and so be able to contribute positively to the nation, since I'd be enjoying a position where f privilege in other aspects of my life.
The RF would be much better if William or Kate had gone into public sector work.

I think the Tindals have got the perfect balance.
They seem like such a “normal” family, but at the same time do their bit when duty calls.

quietnightmare · 23/10/2022 16:05

I would just have a bloody good time

Prescottdanni123 · 23/10/2022 16:07

Doing plenty of work for animal conservation. The only thing I shoot with is a camera.

AnApparitionQuipped · 23/10/2022 16:15

I'd become a mole for 'Republic'.

MaChienEstUnDick · 23/10/2022 16:26

I would follow Cam's example on violence against women, but I would turbo-charge it. I would visit every refuge in the country, speak to every MP, visit councils, I would never fucking stop if I had their platform.

And Wimbledon.

AL257 · 23/10/2022 16:34

Truthfully, I’d pull a Harry and move as far as possible, I wouldn’t want to associate with that family. So I guess I’d be like Harry.

Yes, I was going to say the same, I think they have a nice balance.

Whatsleftnow · 23/10/2022 17:04

I’d be one of the lazy, decadent kind that brings down the monarchy and loses my head.

cosmiccosmos · 23/10/2022 17:18

Non of them are a role model and I don't think of what they do as 'working'.

Anyone can go around talking about mental health etc but the state of the NHS is a disgrace and yet they carry on taking the money, smiling and waving. They don't have a clue, maybe go and work in a hospital or be a support person in a school but honestly it's embarrassing with their little pet projects.

Same.

I'd have days like Princess Margaret's, waking when I wanted, servants attending to me, drawing my bath and then just literally drinking and eating the best food and drink for the day!

Snozzlemaid · 23/10/2022 17:29

Sophie Wessex definitely.

The Duchess of Kent did go and work in a school (one with an above-average number of disadvantaged children) anonymously as "Mrs Kent" for 13 years.

QuebecBagnet · 23/10/2022 17:39

I wouldn’t want to be a working royal if I was a minor royal. Agree that the Tindalls seem to have a good life. Or maybe Beatrice and Eugenie.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 23/10/2022 17:47

Another one for the Tindalls I think.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 23/10/2022 18:36

The Tindalls have the perfect life, living provided by Mummy whole family on one Estate. Perfect.

Gingerkittykat · 23/10/2022 18:38

Princess Anne is the only worthy role model in that messed up family.

I would hate to be a working royal and think Harry did the right thing by getting out.

Is that the Duchess of Gloucester or the Duchess of Kent ?
I do know the Duchess of Kent used to present the Wimbledon trophy.

JaceLancs · 25/10/2022 22:17

I would do what I do now which is work in the charitable sector and go out of my way to support unfashionable but very worthy causes

Coronateachingagain · 25/10/2022 22:20

I think I would like to be Anne because I am a workaholic 😅😅

Vitriolinsanity · 25/10/2022 22:37

I'd be Anne. No nonsense, sense of duty, love the countryside and an Olympian. Can still rock a 30 year old outfit and hair that defies Style & Beauty.
