In preparation for the books release , and with permission from randompenguin , I thought it would be good to start this thread now !

Gosh, Ellen Degeneres and David Letterman, would never have put either of those on the same stage as the glorious Michelle Obama.

SilverLiningPlaybook · 06/10/2022 06:25

Mine has arrived on my kindle. Looking forward to reading it!

GlorianaCervixia · 06/10/2022 08:23

I'm halfway through Chapter 4 and enoying that it starts off with some historical background rather than jumping straight into modern times. I won't give any spoilers but it's very interesting to hear about some well-known events from the point of view of the courtiers who were there. Also enjoying the discussion about the very slow modernisation of palace relationships with the media and the different approaches of various senior courtiers.

GobbolinoTheWitchesCat · 06/10/2022 12:00

I'm not really interested in any Harry and meghan stuff but curious about the rest. If anyone does want to post spoilers somewhere please signpost me!

@GlorianaCervixia very interesting to hear about some well-known events from the point of view of the courtiers who were there would love to know more!

I've just finished the book and only the last couple of chapters were about Meghan and Harry and those were nearly all released as excerpts in the newspaper.

I liked that the book traced how courtiers worked from Edward VIII through to today and stayed very focused on the theme of how advisors manage their responsibility to the individuals of the royal family versus their responsibility to the future of the monarchy itself.

Most entertaining part was the chapter about Prince Andrew and his ability to make a fool of himself, culminating with the Newsnight interview. Interesting details about how the interview came about and the involvement of his advisor.

It gave a very good picture of how the different personalities of the senior royals shape who they choose as staff and how their offices function. Charles sounds genuinely terrible to work for - chaotic and shouting at people, advisors backstabbing to get his attention. William and Kate seem very easy. Would have liked more about Anne but she probably doesn't have enough drama to merit more space.

This sounds so interesting. I love royal history. Going to download now.

Note that P&POW did a "surprise" one day visit to a charity in Belfast. I think this new tactic of "surprise" visits to prevent relentless knee jerk negativity in the media and on SM, is a good one and I hope they all carry on with it.

I just realised the podcast thread is quiet as there is nothing much to discuss on the podcasts

so back to the victimhood as it generates more posts.

RandomPenguinHouse · 05/10/2022 20:37

Also all this talk of fashion makes me think that instead of ‘courtiers’, the thread should be titled couturiers. (Yes I amuse myself.)

There’s a ref in the book to one of HM staff going through immigration in Australia. He had Courtier listed as his occupation. The border guard looked at it and told him ‘mate, courier doesn’t have a T’.

Arnaquer · 06/10/2022 15:33

@GlorianaCervixia
The book does sound interesting, I like royal history books also. I'm glad it's not just about H&M as we've heard it already. I might get it on audiobook if it's available.

ShamedBySiri · 06/10/2022 15:36

It does sound interesting.

I have to say my friend who works at Highgrove would not recognise that description.

Love that little story @MrsTumblebee

I guess you feel at home here. I'm glad you've found a thread you are more comfortable with.

Ohnonevermind · 06/10/2022 15:43

My kindle has disappeared but I’ll find it later and download the book

perhaps they will now release the bullying report so the bad behaviour will be out in the open for all to see . I can’t understand people who defend bullying behaviour 🤷‍♀️

Ohnonevermind · 06/10/2022 15:47

its good to hear that William and Kate are liked as bosses, are they discussed much in the book ?

There are more posts on that thread than there are here. I guess there is only so much you can talk about Chanel and Stella McCartney. But add MM to the mix and I’m sure you’ll find a way.
MM is not the victim in this situation. It’s those who feel compelled to devote the majority of their days regurgitating the same drivel about her over and over and over again. Who would voluntarily choose to live with that kind of compulsion? 😥

Do you think Lady in Waiting counts as an occupation? I’d love to hear an Australian border guard’s take on that!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 06/10/2022 21:23

Note that P&POW did a "surprise" one day visit to a charity in Belfast

I don't know if this still applies, LondonWolf, but practically any visits to Northern Ireland used to be "surprise" ones because of the security situation - as in if it wasn't known they were going it wouldn't be so easy to make plans to kill them

Ohnonevermind · 06/10/2022 22:06

Kate handled that lady really well in NI

A heavily pregnant woman?!

Gilmorehill · 06/10/2022 22:30

I’m tempted to buy the book as I find doing that for a living rather weird. However, it’s quite pricey. Is it worth it?

BornBlonde · 06/10/2022 22:43

I think I need the book

Yes she did. That woman was pathetic, filming it. Why go and wait just to say we don't want you here!

SilverLiningPlaybook · 06/10/2022 23:15

I’m finding the book is just rehashing stories told over and over again so far and is quite dull…

nonono1 · 07/10/2022 07:20

Valentine Low went on Good Morning Britain apparently:

Asked by Good Morning Britain host Susanna Reid whether staff had created a 'group' called the 'Sussex Survivors' Club', he replied: 'Absolutely, yes.'
Ms Reid replied: 'What did they survive?'. Mr Low said: 'I think it was a very difficult experience for some of them.
'As I revealed last year, there were allegations that Meghan bullied staff. People talked to me of people being completely destroyed.
'I've heard people at the time, faced with a possible encounter with Meghan, were saying things like 'I feel sick' or 'I'm shaking' - extraordinary things for an employee to say about the prospect of seeing their employer in half-an-hour.'

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11289571/Bombshell-new-book-claims-dashing-Duke-Sussex-turning-seedy-old-rou-Meghan.html

The bullying claims are pretty dreadful IF true.

SilverLiningPlaybook · 07/10/2022 09:42

Harry sounds really quite mentally ill even before M arrived on the scene. It’s as well he’s out of the RF now. It was never going to work. I can’t think he’s an easy person to live with though.
