'Courtiers' by Valentine Low

Extracts of this were being discussed on a previous thread ('The Times) which just finished.

I'm interested in buying this book, despite never having ever bought any other book about the Royal Family and never having watched The Crown.

I'm interested however in the archaic rituals of the Royal Court and how it works as an employer, and also how the courtiers advise.

Yes the excerpts were focused on Harry and Meghan but presumably that's just for clicks given the relevant timing, and that the book goes well beyond that.

Poignant that in the synopsis for it on The Foyles website it says:

The Queen, after a remarkable 70 years of service, is entering the final seasons of her reign without her husband Philip to guide her. Meanwhile, Charles seeks to define what his future as King will be, with his court wielding ever greater influence as he plans for his imminent accession.

Anyone else thinking of buying this?

Much as I wish for my own egotistical reasons that a couple aged 41 and 38 respectively could accurately be described as ‘young’, alas it’s a stretch.

What’s wrong with describing them as simply ‘a couple’? Or a couple with a young family.

They are a young couple raising a family.

They are an approaching middle age couple.

adriftabroad · 29/09/2022 17:10

I got married at 34, I like to think of myself as a "child bride", so young, barely out of my teens!

RandomPenguinHouse · 29/09/2022 17:11

@LondonWolf ‘middke age’ is 65+ right? Asking for a friend.

I'm so invested I actually went and looked it up! Apparently middle age is after 45 and before 65. I'm right in the middle of being middle aged Grin

It is definitely NOT 52. That is all I know.

Another source tells me it's between 40 - 60 😩

Perhaps that's enough internet for today... 👵🏻

Age is relative. I'm sure any teenager would think a couple aged 41 & 38 were old.
But my Grandmother in her early 90's thought people in their late 90's were old but someone in their 80's was young.

I think anyone who thinks H&M is young is likely to be someone whose age is moving beyond middle aged and into elderly age. Or at least pensionable age.

Confused

Why on earth do people call them a young couple ? I know a couple of grandparents the same age as Meghan !

38 and 41 can't be considered old. I'm sure posters on this thread are a lot older.

Croque · 29/09/2022 17:28

I don't think of H as middle aged in that he is younger than M in earth years and much younger in terms of lived experience. He had a few girlfriends before but they were all privileged and equally cossetted. He will always be a big kid trapped in an older body. M on the other hand was an older, well travelled, worldly girl from an upper working class background who had been around the block enough times to skillfully take over his life once she had made it her resolve to become his princess. I'm sure the love story wont be told in that way on Lifetime though!

Bless you. You’re not very skilled at trolling are you? “You’re old” is training wheels level trolling.

No one has said old. They've said not a young couple, approaching middle age, which is accurate.

Your posts are making me laugh, you're trying so hard to land your little spiteful darts and no one cares 😁

Trolling? I gave an opinion that is most likely true. I'm afraid that I won't be scared off this platform because you don't like to hear it. It's an open forum. I think Harry and Meghan are an attractive, happy, young couple. My opinion carries as much weight as anyone else, whether you agree or not.

Reminds me of a poster from a few days ago.

Obsessed with age and apparently we're all 'menopausal' frumps green with envy of beeoddeefull Meghan and her balding 'handsome' husband.

If they're amazingly happy with their lives, then great. No need for people to rush on to these threads to protect them from 'bullying' by a load of ancient losers, is there?

LondonWolf · 29/09/2022 17:38

Oh I do agree but you might notice that most of manage to post without repeatedly insulting other posters though Grin

smileandjoy · 29/09/2022 17:42

I think they’re a great couple. I’m not sure why having a kind word to say about them stirs such a reaction. No one’s been insulted. I don’t understand why describing them as ‘young’ has caused offence. They are a young couple. They are also a beautiful, loving couple. It’s nice to see.

SilverLiningPlaybook · 29/09/2022 17:42

41 is not young by anyones standards.

It is to someone 42 or older.

So if you are 104, is someone of 103 'young'?

No one's "offended" though. They just don't agree with you and as you said yourself all our opinions carry as much weight as anyone else's and you have tried to be insulting but no one cares.

Honestly this genuinely baffles me, this posting and then immediately denying or twisting what has been said as though the posts cannot still be seen right there! It's really bizarre.

I'm not 😊

Personally, I'd consider a 'young couple' to be 20s, perhaps very low 30s at a push. I can remember my mum turning 40 and discussing with my friends at school how shockingly ancient she was.
