What's it for?

To help traction for horses and carriages

To help to wooden wheels of the gun carriage to grip the road

Maybe it's for the horses feet, keeps it a bit quieter?

Maybe traction for the gun carriage or horse poop!

Traction for carriages, filling in uneven bits? We were just speculating about this.

It's to make life easier for the horses.

Yeo. Will be to do with hooves and wheels keeping contact with the surface. Particularly if the horses startle.

So glad someone else asked this! I was googling it but not getting any answers!
