The royal family

To think the late, great HM Elizabeth 11 should be buried in Westminster Abbey?

I am a suporter of our UK monarchy and wonder if the rightful place of rest for our beloved longest serving monarch should have been the Abbey? The huge numbers of people paying respects will not be able to do so after Monday. A fitting effigy etc would be my choice. I accept HM loved Windsor so perhaps that is the reason. I couldn't go due to my disability but would have liked to have taken my grandchildren at a later date.

It's not about you.
I imagine she wants to be buried where her parents, sister and husband are.

HM Elizabeth 11?

Have you got a crystal ball?

you can go to St George’s chapel in Windsor- it’s open to public

Northernlurker · 17/09/2022 19:15

Monarchs haven't been buried at Westminster for ages. She wanted to be with her family. That's her right. I mean this nicely but it's not about you/us.

Caspianberg · 17/09/2022 19:16

They haven’t been buried in Westminster for about 200 years. They were running out of space.

Cherryblossoms85 · 17/09/2022 19:17

She's not my family. She's being buried with her family.

SavBbunny · 17/09/2022 19:17

@Caspianberg thank you. I didn't know that.

She wants to be with her husband and parents.

Just go to Windsor to visit. The chapel is open

Mochudubh · 17/09/2022 19:21

I think she should be buried wherever she wanted. I'd have loved it if she'd specified she wanted to be buried in the grounds of Balmoral with no fuss.

Smartiepants79 · 17/09/2022 19:23

The Queen should be buried exactly where she wanted to be. With her husband.
Random visitors were not (and should not) be taken into account.

Topseyt123 · 17/09/2022 19:24

No. I think that her place of rest should be the place that she herself has chosen. That is Saint George's Chapel Windsor, where she will be in a vault along with her parents (and the ashes of her sister).

You can visit Saint George's Chapel. It is open to the public when not in use by the royals.

Her wishes are being followed, as they should be.

Other monarchs and their relatives are also buried out at Windsor including Queen Victoria.

SavBbunny · 17/09/2022 19:27

@Mochudubh yes. I see that. I was just interested to find out why Windsor was chosen.

@Smartiepants79 are you normally so rude? I am a royalist and Christian. Are you?

Because it’s where she lived? Fairly normal to scatter ashes or be buried in a beloved place.

Luredbyapomegranate · 17/09/2022 19:33

They’ve been buried at Frogmore since Victoria.

EII decided on her own arrangements and presumably didn’t want her grave to be gawped at. You can visit the chapel at Windsor but obviously not the vault.

Anyway Westminster Abbey doesn’t need any more tourists.

Etc etc

Oh thank you for posting this, I hadn't realised. I want to pay my respects but having a 1 year old, being pregnant and having a stinking cold means a trip into London to stand in a 12 hour queue is just not sensible. I'll just have to plan a trip to Windsor at somepoint.

Sisisisi · 17/09/2022 19:34

Effigy?
Do you mean a statue?
I think they are planning one but Trafalgar Square.
It is the persons choice where they are laid to rest though and also tradition.
Tbh I think like Diana they want to be somewhere private.

CPL593H · 17/09/2022 19:35

She wanted to be with her father, mother, sister and husband. It was all very carefully planned but I'm sure if she'd wanted the Abbey, it could have been arranged.

SavBbunny · 17/09/2022 19:45

@Caspianberg again thank you.
I had been asked by friends and I didn't know. Longest serving monarch and all that. I don't care if I go in a beam trench!

Windsor is marginal more accessible to the majority of the country that Westminster. We don't all live in and around London.

Maireas · 17/09/2022 19:46

You can visit the chapel, but I don't think that you can visit the vault?

@Smartiepants79 are you normally so rude? I am a royalist and Christian. Are you?

😵‍💫 I wasn’t being rude! Just stating the facts as I believe them to be!
I wouldn’t call myself either a royalist or practicing Christian but I have respect and affection for the queen and I’m not quite sure what being a Christian has to do with it! Many of the visitors are clearly members of different faiths.
Expecting a stranger (have you ever met the queen?) to decide where she is going to be buried on the whims of a load of people she’s never met is a bit strange.
Her family will bury her where she chose to be, with her husband. As it happens most burial places are also public places so you’ll be able to visit if you wish.
