The royal family

To think the late, great HM Elizabeth 11 should be buried in Westminster Abbey?

I am a suporter of our UK monarchy and wonder if the rightful place of rest for our beloved longest serving monarch should have been the Abbey? The huge numbers of people paying respects will not be able to do so after Monday. A fitting effigy etc would be my choice. I accept HM loved Windsor so perhaps that is the reason. I couldn't go due to my disability but would have liked to have taken my grandchildren at a later date.

@Smartiepants79 your tone was rude and yes I have met the Queen and many members of the Royal family.

No, @Smartiepants79 was not rude but you are being oddly aggressive (about nothing)

I know how the Royal vault works but when she goes to the chapel and is ‘buried’ is she being buried inside, under the chapel? I can’t understand it

bellac11 · 17/09/2022 19:57

What a bizarre thread

What about people that live in Newcastle, should she have been buried up there for easy access to people in the North East?

I never knew the Queen was so thoughtless

HM Elizabeth 11?

Have you got a crystal ball?

I thought you were being sarky because she's Elizabeth I of Scotland and then I realised it was eleven :)

Yes, a vault, so not a burial plot. That's why the coffins are lead lined.

CakeCrumbs44 · 17/09/2022 20:10

I assume it was her decision, as it should be.

SavBbunny · 17/09/2022 20:15

I have asked for mumsnet to take down the thread. Thank you to those who kindly gave me some information.

HMQ's parents and sister and husband are at Windsor, why would she want to be buried separately? She's not public property anymore, she should be buried where she wished

Why? They take too many threads down where the OP doesn’t like how things have gone.

Absolutely, if people make themselves look stupid thats their lookout.

Why? To be fair in the poster you have an issue with there was nothing wrong with what they said and actually your tone in your opening post sounded more rude than anyone else

im finding this thread really interesting DONT TAKE IT DOWN pls

Sisisisi · 17/09/2022 20:38

Tbh Op your original Op sounds like an AIBU and so people responded.
We/you dont get to decide where the Queen is buried, its a moot point really.

Northernlurker · 17/09/2022 20:39

I don't see why the thread needs removing. Just because the op doesn't like being disagreed with Hmm
The royal vault is v interesting. The occupants are usually embalmed I believe and then popped in a lead lined double coffin so they can be placed on what I assume are plinths or shelves.
In the 1920s there was a major reorganisation and lots of royals were buried at Frogmore. Then the Duke and Duchess of Windsor and others followed. The burial ground there is where Prince Edward, Princess Anne, The Gloucesters etc will probably end up. Who knows what Charles will opt for. Prince Philip is only in the vault waiting for the Queen, he will probably be moved to the chapel with King George and Queen Elizabeth tomorrow, ready for the Queen to join him.

If @mnhq take this down because you don’t like the answers, that would be ridiculous.

I, obviously, met my mum and had 39 years with her as a huge part of my life. When she died, we kept her to her wishes of what she wanted for her funeral and final resting place.

I can’t fathom why anyone would think they get an opinion on where the Queen is buried. Even if they have met her.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 17/09/2022 20:46

Perhaps they could install one of those robotic figures in Westminster Abbey, similar to those at Disneyland, dressed like the Queen who could say "and what do you do?" when anyone approached her.

moneybeingwasted · 17/09/2022 20:48

I do think that some of the replies to this post are quite hostile TBH . Nothing wrong with disagreeing ,but people can be unnecessarily abrupt!
We live in a tricky world and people are struggling for various reasons and it makes the world even harder to navigate when random people are so offhand for no particular reason !
FWIW a very close friend lives on the Windsor estate and worked for the Queen in a senior position…and yes my friend is really happy that the Queen will be there ,but I didn’t read the OP post as a reason to be snappy with her .

Why ask on munsnet instead of your friends the royals then ?

Cuck00soup · 17/09/2022 20:58

I think it's generally considered polite to respect the wishes of the deceased.

I'm actually quite shocked that someone would consider it remotely appropriate to place someone they claim to respect away from their family and the site of their choosing.

This is nonsense

People really do not need to be pussyfooted around and hand held when they adopt ridiculous positions

Its the classic south east or Londoncentric view that is actually quite offensive which I think has got people responding. Has the OP not even considered that someone might choose their own burial site/area and that people dont all live in proximity to London??

She says 'the huge number of people paying their respects wont be able to after Monday', what can someone say to that, it makes no sense at all

And then she becomes aggressive and hostile to a poster who points that out!!!

She needs to take ownership

LemonRedwood · 17/09/2022 21:08

A fitting effigy etc would be my choice.

Effigy?? And what makes you think your choice has any relevance here whatsoever?

tigger1001 · 17/09/2022 21:16

I am not a royalist. But she was the queen for 70 years and lived her life accordingly. In death she should be given piece and be laid to rest where she wanted to be, not where others think she should be.

Her duty should now be finished.

I really wish you had said placed instead of popped. It just doesn't seem like the right word for moving royal bodies around 😂
