The royal family

To think the late, great HM Elizabeth 11 should be buried in Westminster Abbey?

I am a suporter of our UK monarchy and wonder if the rightful place of rest for our beloved longest serving monarch should have been the Abbey? The huge numbers of people paying respects will not be able to do so after Monday. A fitting effigy etc would be my choice. I accept HM loved Windsor so perhaps that is the reason. I couldn't go due to my disability but would have liked to have taken my grandchildren at a later date.

I have asked for mumsnet to take down the thread. Thank you to those who kindly gave me some information.

Why? People have not agreed with your personal choice of where the Queen should be buried. That doesn't mean it needs to be taken down.

You took issue in particular with @Smartiepants79, who I didn't see as rude.

There is interesting information on this thread and it should be left up.

Ridiculous to ask for the thread to be removed. But they probably will. They do it all the time now.

The last monarch to be buried in the Abbey was George II in 1760. Since then, every one has been buried at Windsor. So no, this is the right place for her to be and where she would have expected to end up. Philip is there too, waiting for her.

mrsbyers · 17/09/2022 21:51

I think the very least we can do is respect that she is interred wherever she wanted to be

littleducks · 17/09/2022 21:52

I particularly found the link about who is buried at the chapel interesting would be a shame for the thread to go

Why? Because you didn't like some of the responses?

Her parents, sister, grandparents and great grandparents are all there in St George's chapel at Windsor. Great-great parents Victoria and Albert in their own mausoleum nearby at Frogmore and many aunts, uncles, great aunts, cousins etc in (non monarchs) in the royal burial ground adjacent to that. It's where the House of Windsor are buried and always have been.

I hope MNHQ tell the OP that her request is ridiculous quite frankly.

The Queen deserves to have her choices and plans respected.

I’m not sure if it’s the Queen’s choice not to be buried at Westminster Abbey - like previous posters have said it’s full up. I agree with the op that it does seem strange that someone so prominent with such a long association with central London isn’t there though. However it’s lovely that she will now be laid to rest with her husband and other close family.

As PPs have said, every monarch from the last 250 years has been buried at Windsor.
It would be a surprise and very much not in line with royal tradition for anywhere else to have been chosen.

Why do you say she had a "long association with central London"? She much preferred country life. Windsor was her main home, especially in recent years. Londoners will know it was fairly unusual to see the Royal Standard flying over Buckingham Palace, indicating her being in residence.

Windsor Castle and the Royal chapel are open to the public for a fee, exactly the same as Westminster Abbey is, and with similar restrictions on visiting.

What association does she have with central London? Her homes were Windsor and Balmoral predominantly

@Mochudubh yes. I see that. I was just interested to find out why Windsor was chosen.

@SavBbunny you could have googled or asked why that decision was made, instead of starting a thread the way you did.

SavBbunny · 17/09/2022 19:29

@Smartiepants79 are you normally so rude? I am a royalist and Christian. Are you?

@SavBbunny

@Smartiepants79 wasn't rude. Whether smartie is a 'Royalist' or a Christian is completely irrelevant. She (or he) is just as entitled to an opinion as you are.

plus your opinion on where The Queen should be buried, is irrelevant. It was HER choice. Nothing to do with you what-so-ever. As it is you can take your grandchildren to Windsor, she didn't 'owe' that to you either!

@SavBbunny

and I hope @MNHQ tell you 'No'

you started an ignorant thread & were rude to people, despite that, people have taken the time to post interesting & informative information.
