I meant to add William as well!

’Elizabeth Woodville v Richard III’

🙄

There is a whole bunch of laws on this, the last was passed in 1952 and a summary is here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regency_Acts

Current counsellors of state are Camilla, William, Harry, Beatrice and Andrew. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Counsellor_of_State (I assume Catherine will replace William in the event William becomes Monarch)

I thought it was Catherine? That's what I read. She's not in the line of succession, but I understood that she could act on George's behalf with the Counsellors of State.
I know that Philip was going to act as Regent for Charles in the event of HMQ's early demise, so that must be the pattern.
Happy to be corrected if that's not the right information!

There was a special act passed to make it Philip as it would've otherwise been Margaret and she was seen as unsuitable.

Philip was in the line of succession of his own right I think, whereas Kate obviously isn't. I don't know if that would affect the possibility of making an act to put her in place.

BobbysGirly · 17/09/2022 11:08

I think it would be Harry.
And this is the reason he was not allowed to travel on the first plane to Balmoral with William. The press and many posters on here were trying to make out he'd been deliberately excluded and forced to travel later because of the Meghan and Harry situation. In fact it's protocol

Just what I came on to say ^^

Carrieonmywaywardsun · 17/09/2022 11:11

Anne, Harry would be good but he doesn't want it. The Cambridge/Wales children are too young

Papyrus · 17/09/2022 11:21

I expect the Regency Act will be amended to remove Harry (as he's not domiciled in the UK) and Andrew (who wants him carrying out ceremonial duties) as counsellors of state.

I could also see Beatrice being removed if the Act is revamped as she's not a working royal, so having her stand in for the sovereign doesn't make a lot of sense. Those three could be replaced by Anne, Edward and Catherine.

So it would be Camilla, William, Anne, Edward and Catherine and reflect the slimmed down monarchy Charles wants.

I presume Harry and Andrew would be unsuitable as well and can't really see Beatrice wanting to take it on. Non

@Luredbyapomegranate it can’t be Kate she is not in the line of succession

@toomuchlaundry

It can - special provision can be made - prince Philip would have been regent for Charles, because Margaret was judged unsuitable.

Andrew would also be judged unsuitable, so Kate - or Edward if she didn’t want to.

Arbesque · 17/09/2022 11:23

Sorry no idea where that random non came from.

blockpavingismynightmare · 17/09/2022 11:25

None of them. It's high time it was all stopped. Charles has got in there quickly while the public are in shock and the PR is at it's best. He is at best a figurehead only. When he goes the whole lot should. It's a bloody nonsense when they can protect a nonce and let him wear a uniform in public.

felulageller · 17/09/2022 11:30

I think if Charles dies before George is 18 (which I think is highly likely given those pictures of his swollen red hands) there will quickly be a change to Regency rules to sort this.

Harry may step up or refuse or be generally useless. Or there could be a very messy divorce.

Andrew is next.

So to stop that (and save the monarchy) I'd think they could change the male primogeniture rule to be retrospective to all living royals (as I think they should have done) which would put Anne and her children first.

Autumn Kelly would never have been made to renounce her Catholicism if they didn't think this was a possibility.

Not that I'm a great fan of Peter Phillips, but anyone is better than Andrew.

If Charles and William die then George is automatically king. However, if that happened when he was underage, he would have a regent to do the job for him. That's where it gets complicated, as the current situation is that Harry would do it if he moved back to the UK, and otherwise the next in line is Andrew. And then his daughters who have next to zero experience as senior royals. As ever with a hereditary monarchy, we don't get to choose.

Philip was in the line of succession though, he's the great-grandson of Queen Victoria.

Anne or Edward

Meagain would be back to the UK faster than concorde if Harry was regent/crowned.

😂😂

ElizabethBest · 17/09/2022 11:39

It’s Beatrice isn’t it? Harry and Andrew are disqualified as neither of them are working royals and she’s next.

MintJulia · 17/09/2022 11:41

Princess Anne

Although whether she would want to do it is a different question.

As others have said, she's very inexperienced and seems in no way qualified for the position.

No. Harry is 5th in line, after William and his children.

SnowdaySewday · 17/09/2022 11:45

Harry is still domiciled in the UK. Hence, he can still be a Counsellor of State, as it is that, rather than where he lives, which is in the criteria.

Autumn would not have to renounce Catholicism nowadays. I'm fairly sure Royals can marry Catholics, they just can not be R.C themselves.
I doubt that the monarch would easily agree to a marriage between a Catholic and Protestant for direct line heirs. It brings up issues with raising children in the faith etc.

The Princess Royal
Prince Edward

Certainly not Andrew or Harry.
