The royal family

When do we think the King's Coronation will be?

Antarcticant · 11/09/2022 11:25

It took 16 months to plan EIIR's Coronation, but I should think they could do it more quickly these days with improvements in technology. And Charles will have had a long time to think about what he wants! I would guess next June.

For some mad reason I think it has to be after 12 months? Maybe to do with mourning?

TheMadGardener · 11/09/2022 11:56

I think summer of 2023 is the most likely.

I reckon they’ll do it next May/June-it’s a good weather time of year for public holiday/celebrations/street parties etc

How apt a typo. I agree it will probably be slimed down.

LostForWords2021 · 11/09/2022 12:22

I think they will wait for good weather, June 2023

Oh, yes - I hadn't thought of that, but you're right, there is a tradition of observing a year of mourning. I can't see it being in winter; I suppose it could happen round about a year from now next autumn and there'd be a chance the weather would be OK.

I have two DC doing exams next year, would it be unreasonable to assume they'll take exam period into consideration?

It doesn't need to be over 12 months. Hers was such a long wait for other reasons.

They wont do in over winter. Probably in spring.

Thank you for the link - so the Telegraph's information implies they won't wait a full year. It would make sense not to in view of Charles's age - I imagine he wants to get on with things while he is still in good health.

Yes it would.

My guess is that they will observe a year of official mourning.

Yes, I imagine there will be a lot of slimy obsequiousness going on!

Queen Victoria died in January, Edward VII crowned in August of the following year
Edward VII died in May, George V crowned in June of the following year
George V died in January, Edward VIII never crowned

and then when George VI died as mentioned the coronation was over a year later - so there is definitely precedent for it being over a year later, but I would hope Charles would want to get it done in about May of next year?

greenhousegal · 11/09/2022 12:45

He is King already. The coronation is surely just a pageant for the peasants lol.

Yes, of course; but I think it has religious significance for the King, they anoint him and so on.

The date of the coronation will be released in plenty of time for the exam boards to take it into consideration, rather than the other way round. There will not be any exams on that day or on any other public holiday. It is up to your DC to plan their revision appropriately around whatever is going on at the time, as would be the case at any other year. One coronation isn't going to make or break their exams.

  • two birds one stone - slimmed and slimed down all at once….!

They might tag it onto, or amend the late May bank holiday, like they did for the Platinum Jubilee?

bob78 · 11/09/2022 12:58

Thanks for this I've been meaning to look. It's interesting though that the deaths were earlier in the year so the first summer would have felt very soon, and it makes sense to do in summer. Summer 2024 seems a very long way away and I wonder if that's a bit unnecessary when the context of her death is very natural rather than tragic as opposed to her father's which was more of a shock. But maybe 9 ish months won't be enough to plan, will be interesting to see.

ShaunaTheSheep · 11/09/2022 12:58

Which was of course in the half term and in the middle of school exams, so probably a good time.

Crimsonripple · 11/09/2022 12:58

It didn't take 16 months to organise it. They postponed it due to the poor economic status in the country at the time.

Hmm, if they take that approach this time round, we can probably look forward to it happening in 2033.

Yes, I reckon that’s what they’ll do-tack it onto the existing BH at the end of May-maybe the Friday before half term so it’s a 4-day long weekend.

I can already imagine the TV commentary: "And who would have thought, this time last year, when we were celebrating the Platinum Jubilee ..."
