I am glad Charles is to be known as King Charles the third. I did read a rumour he might take the name George as King. But we all know him as Charles. William and Kate are now Duke and Duchess of Cornwall. I wonder when they will be Prince and Princess of Wales. And also will Lillabet and Archie now be Prince and Princess. Not heard this mentioned yet.

Who knows

Craftybodger · 08/09/2022 21:53

I don’t think that Archie and Lillibet automatically get titles and this would seem to go against the thinking that King Charles wants to slim down the monarchy.

Isaidnoalready · 08/09/2022 21:55

He has the ability to grant them titles i believe its not automatic

SenecaFallsRedux · 08/09/2022 21:57

Under the Letters Patent now in effect (Charles can issue new ones), Archie and Lilibet are HRHs, prince and princess.

WGACA · 08/09/2022 21:58

I think Harry’s children are now prince and princess.

JustLyra · 09/09/2022 01:02

There are quite a few automatic title changes. William and Harry get the "The" so become HRH The Prince William/Harry showing they are children of the monarch.
William becomes Duke of Cornwall so is Duke of Cornwall & Cambridge.
All of Charles' grandchildren, as they're all male line, are entitled to HRH Prince/ss. That even applies to any grandchildren born (in marriage) after he dies. Princess Alexandra and several of George V's grandchildren were born after his death and still titled as grandchildren of a monarch.

Charles is now free to give William the Prince of Wales title, and if it's still the plan, Edward the Duke of Edinburgh title.

Are the Prince/Princess titles for H&M's children automatic now, or does Charles have to grant them?

BadgerB · 09/09/2022 12:52

Ignore my last. Should have read the thread.....

Andromachehadabadday · 09/09/2022 12:55

Archie and Lilibet, might have been prince and princess now.

Except that Charles always planned a paired down Royal Family, so it’s possible they would not.

H&M refused titles for their kids, because they wouldn’t be Prince/ Princess.

So whichever Charles decided, they won’t be now.

SenecaFallsRedux · 09/09/2022 13:37

Technically, Archie and Lilibet are prince and princess and HRH now. I doubt that they will be used, however. Charles would have to issue new letters patent to remove those titles.

Narcheska · 09/09/2022 13:45

Harry’s children are now automatically HRH Prince and Princess as grandchildren (following the male line) of the monarch. It will be up to Harry and Meghan if they want to use the titles they may do what Edward and Sophie did for their children and not use them.

to remove the HRH prince and princess from them Charles would have to amend the letters of patent set out by George V. His initial plans were to slim down the monarchy and that could have meant amending the Letters Patent BUT given all the bad blood recently around that I expect he’ll decide not too. He won’t want to start his reign off with something that will cause such a massive emotive and dividing response and reaction on both sides

I would imagine their new titles will be used A LOT

SenecaFallsRedux · 09/09/2022 14:06

Harry and Meghan chose not to use the titles Lord and Lady which their children were entitled to as children of a Duke. I seriously doubt that they plan to jump from just Archie and just Lilibet to prince and princess. There could be a middle ground, however, where they use Lord and Lady as the Wessex children do.

SenecaFallsRedux · 09/09/2022 18:11

William is Prince of Wales. The King just announced it in his speech.

makinganavalon · 09/09/2022 18:14

Really wished he had taken Arthur, which I believe is one of his middle names?
Thought it would have been great to have a King Arthur!
Thought his speech was lovely.
