I plan to go next week from the midlands, to oh my respects. How many of us are planning the journey? I’m considering going late in the evening as it should be open 23 hours a day according to the news.

I remember the Queen mum queues! So probably a no from me but I will go up there.
if it is anything like the plat jubilee ( it’ll be worse) then there will be millions there.
people will come from all over the world.
seems strange but they will.
I can’t imagine ever wanting to go to another country to commemorate their head of state dying. But I guess the Queen is head of state of 15 countries and also globally admired.

BrokenMatress · 09/09/2022 17:45

Is it Westminster Abbey?
I live 5 minutes walk away. My dog wont be happy if the queues stop the security guards giving him biscuits.

gogohmm · 09/09/2022 17:45

No, I wouldn't visit a family member or friend either

nokitchen · 09/09/2022 18:05

Feel massively sorry for the police having to do ridiculously long shifts for the next week or so. I'll be staying well clear. Is the extinction rebellion thing still going ahead in London tomorrow too?

MsFogi · 09/09/2022 18:12

I don't get this at all - what is the point of visiting a coffin that may (or may not) have the dead Queen in it?

KassandraOfSparta · 09/09/2022 18:17

Depending on timings, planning to take the kids and visit St Giles in Edinburgh.

Costacoffeeplease · 09/09/2022 18:23

The point is to pay your respects. I can’t believe some of the responses here,
‘what’s wrong with people?’

There’s nothing wrong with people. It’s a tradition, it’s in the plan, the one that the queen herself oversaw. If you don’t want to, that’s fine, it’s not obligatory, but it’s a moment in history and many people will want to mark the occasion.

I went to Thatcher’s funeral parade

Just to make sure?

🤣

Gross. No!

How is it gross?
What a strange comment!

knickersniff · 09/09/2022 18:31

🤣

Seriously bad taste.

Scrambler4 · 09/09/2022 18:48

I think the queue would be considerably shortened if the numpties who turn everything into a social media photo op realise cameras will be banned. Sorry to sound cynical but I think if photography was banned outside Buckingham and Windsor palaces there would be a much smaller crowd today.

I‘m part of Operation London Bridge. We are expecting MILLIONS to queue to see her lie in state. You won’t do it in a day. The line is expected to be about 7 miles long with people camping out for it from tonight.

Just why would people don’t this?

LucyFox · 09/09/2022 18:57

I’d like to but I live in the Midlands & work full time so I don’t think there’s any way I could do it …

KleineDracheKokosnuss · 09/09/2022 19:00

I might go since there’s a day I’ll be in london anyway. But we’ll see.

Zone2NorthLondon · 09/09/2022 19:00

Christ no, why the hell would I?

MalagaNights · 09/09/2022 19:05

I might.
But I wouldn't queue for 7+ hours.

It's a mark of respect. Doing something to actively symbolise the significance of her death for yourself and the country.

Part of the symbolism is doing this en mass, a collective and visible act of respect.

Apparently there is a vigil of the princes where her family stands watch over her body.

People seem so quick to dismiss symbolism, but the draw and impact is very deep and psychological and a life without it usually ends up being empty with people finding superficial ways to fill a void.

The casual dismissal of 'weirdo' and 'what's the point' to things which obviously mean a lot to someone, but are not rational, is very simplistic.

But obviously it's entirely voluntary and I really can't imagine anyone will queue for 24 hours!!!

Tigerstripes1 · 09/09/2022 19:11

I would love to but unfortunately due to work and childcare, there is no way I can. I do have morbid thoughts (due to my line of work) of her in a coffin for so many days and not being refrigerated! Poor thing. If she is still at Balmoral too! They must be keeping her cold somehow though I guess!

ureterr1blemuriel · 09/09/2022 19:13

I think I will be. I live 2 hour drive plus 30min tube away. Now looking at hotels but considering getting up really early Saturday and getting there for around 7am as I’m hoping the queue won’t be more than an hour or two long at that time. My 10yo DD wants to come too. It feels very important to me to do so.

Darbs76 · 09/09/2022 19:30

Yes I will be going, my eldest son and my 14yr old daughter will come too. We will line the funeral route too. We always go to the royal events, good and bad

Mywatchis · 09/09/2022 21:47

OnceAgainWithFeeling

Sorry if it's been asked already but I don't want to lose your name, could I just ask what is the expected turnout for the actual funeral? Is it just plain daft to imagine you'd see anything unless you camped out for a week?

Mywatchis · 09/09/2022 21:53

This place is totally batshit at the moment.

So you've not noticed that different cultures have done exactly the same thing for centuries all over the world?? No, it's just mnet this week that's weird

Aren’t they embalmed? I thought they were.

CatsandFish · 10/09/2022 07:38

fucketyfuckwit · 08/09/2022 21:13

I'm really sure that she wouldn't want us to

@fucketyfuckwit If she wouldn't want us to she wouldn't have agreed to it as part of protocol. It wouldn't even be offered. She clearly at least agreed to allowing people to view her if they wanted to.

WeAreTheHeroes · 10/09/2022 07:45

It's not an open casket. She will have been embalmed. The Queen herself agreed to the plans and it is a way of showing your respects when you won't be attending the funeral or interment. I would like to go, but realistically the only time I can go is overnight or the weekend before the funeral when it is bound to be packed.

My mum went to Winston Churchill's lying in state several decades ago.
