Maybe I am out of touch? Does it really cost £7.1 million to judge entrants to international competition and then put on a prize-giving ceremony?

@yesitssea I find it a bit weird the posters who spend many many hours defending the Royal Family no matter what. Even defending Andrew. Why?

@antelopevalley

i’ve never seen a poster defending Prince Andrew on any thread.

antelopevalley · 17/08/2022 23:17

I have.

Perhaps you should start another thread so to draw them all out 🤣

Neither have I . From what I have seen on MN he is , rightly, 100% condemned.

Well, I have. I have seen rape apologists, people saying he only slept with a girl, PA isn't that bad, so what leave him alone...
I've followed him closely on here, and started threads about him, and can assure you there are some out there who will defend him.

i am disappointed to read that . I have never seen anything like that but I know you are more up to speed about PA . I tend to ignore him as he is a disgusting, arrogant waste of space .
Having said that I never see the point in dragging up PA and / or SF during discussions about H and M .

I do! Because how can we say this is what happens to a member of the RF who is not working, without comparing to another member of the RF who does not work?
On being stripped of titles and patronages. Are they treated the same? They are two disgraced (in some eyes, Harry is too) members of the RF and I want to do comparisons how one is treated compared to the other. Like security for instance. PA keeps his at £900,00p.a. Harry has none. I know the difference is... Andrew didn't want to leave as such, ... well, he wouldn't would he, it's his gravy train.
It's fair to compare I feel.

I have just read a comment on another thread defending Andrew.
Lots of people think he did nothing wrong.
Sex trafficking is not well understood by many of the public. They imagine girls forcibly tied down and beaten up before being transported to some corrupt third-world country. They do not understand sex trafficking can involve girls being flown in by helicopter to glamorous hotels or mansions with no physical force involved.

Which thread ?

antelopevalley · 18/08/2022 10:43

Unpopular opinions Royal Family
Also look at some of the past threads specifically about Andrew. What Rousette says is correct.

That’s fantastic news about the Donkey Sanctuary - I had heard of them but had no idea they were so well supported! 😀

It's since MN started promoting 'adopt a donkey' certificates as ideal Christmas presents for really annoying relatives and friends. The MiL tranche alone supports the whole west wing of Donkey Abbey.

Read it , don’t agree with it . I will have to take your word about other threads.

If any one of the Earthshot schemes can be scaled up globally and provide a solution to the planet's problems, £12million will be very small change in helping that happen. I think Earthshot is an inspiring competition.

antelopevalley · 18/08/2022 11:16

On an ethical level, I do not like Earth shot. It is part of a big push to see technology as the way out of climate change. It is not. It is part of avoiding what really needs to happen.
I know this is an unpopular opinion though. But simply having less polluting cars, planes, etc etc is not the solution. We need wholescale changes.
Working from home or shared local office hubs, public transport properly invested in, limiting flights severely, banning log burning stoves except in rural areas where there are no other realistic alternatives, etc etc.
We cannot continue to live the way we have been doing and rely on technology to enable this. It does not work and is simply delaying the inevitable.

@antelopevalley Do you remember the 14 year old girl from India who was an Earthshot finalist - she developed a solar powered mobile ironing station (street ironers a thing in India). Previously the streets were full of tradesmen burning charcoal to heat their irons, chugging out smoke, causing air pollution. Yes, the solution is technological, but renewable and surely better than previously, with cleaner air and the knock on effects to health. So this is not a good thing?

antelopevalley · 18/08/2022 18:36

@waltzingparrot Of course as an individual initiative it is great.
But it won't stop climate change. We need action by major governments and companies to achieve that.
So in the UK banning wood burners everywhere except in rural areas where there are no alternatives, would tackle a lot of our air pollution. But even this modest action will not be taken.

But that is the WHOLE point of Earthshot - they are not going to be individual projects. They are going to be supported and funded to scale the projects up to be global, which will make a difference.

Snog · 21/08/2022 11:13

I think Prince William and Prince Charles cannot be taken seriously as environmentalists due to how they behave in their own lives where their carbon footprints are simply immense.
Ditto Prince Harry.

Novella4 · 21/08/2022 11:22

Of course they can't be taken seriously as environmentalists but they need to do something to try to distract from their general pointlessness .
So no doubt this looked like a suitable PR trumpet

They don't seem to think things through so no doubt thought it would greenwash all their multiple homes / helicopters etc.
Some of the donors no doubt think the same .
