This seems to be the most tone deaf and damaging decision. It's a public facing event with international leaders and royals. If it was a closed family gathering I could understand it - he is her son still- but why on earth would they allow him to escort her to her seat?! He should be invisible from now on and never represent the RF again. He could have attended and stood somewhere out of the way. She could have chosen anyone to escort her. It's staggeringly awful!

It wasn't a funeral dexra the funeral has been and gone, it is a memorial.

Roussette · 31/03/2022 14:43

Supplied the building and the clergy is normal.
There would be massive costs which is why I was surprised when you INTIMATED that the Church paid for anything more than they normally do

“Two huge champagne receptions followed.”

Really ? Where ? There was a reception for foreign royals in ( I think) St James Palace and I somewhere else for Philip’s side of the family . Beatrice , Eugenie and Zara plus husbands were pictured having lunch at Scott’s so wondering where the champagne reception was and who was it for .

Swayingpalmtrees · 31/03/2022 14:45

It was outlined both receptions in the Telgegraph yesterday and the day before I seem to remember too.

One at Windsor for family and friends - Queen briefly popped in according to the report

One in London for the 700 odd charities, overseas visitors and lots more besides.

These were considered public events, therefore paid out of the grant (ie tax payer)

Chilledchablis1 · 31/03/2022 14:51

I can’t read that as I don’t subscribe to The Telegraph. Maybe you could just tell us where these “ huge champagne receptions” were ?

Eachdaygoesby · 31/03/2022 14:55

I think it's fair to assume that when other visiting royalty flies in from Spain, The Netherlands and Belgium and presumably lots of aristocratic friends and relations are present for an event like this, that they aren't immediately sent packing on the tube or the Heathrow Express straight afterwards, and that a sit down lunch or some sort of catered reception would have been provided.

I don't see why anyone deserves to be called 'miserable' for pointing that out either!

We can hopefully still be polite to one another while disagreeing about the monarchy.

Grin You are a one.
Swayingpalmtrees · 31/03/2022 15:07

I have already told you where they were!

We are just entering the worst cost of living crisis in generations, it is better that the lavish ceremonies and receptions are cut back, now. They are going to make for some truly terrible optics otherwise.
As for the Andrew element as well, leeching onto everything including his paid for house, staff etc - I would like to see him properly removed. I don't know why we are still paying for him at all.

Nope. Not a mention of one champagne fuelled reception, let alone two.

occa · 31/03/2022 15:15

I'm not in the UK and the only reporting on it I saw was basically'Queen attends memorial escorted by Prince Andrew'. Other attendees weren't even mentioned. it certainly came across as pretty intentional but quite ill-judged.

Chilledchablis1 · 31/03/2022 15:18

Swayingpalmtrees

“I have already told you where they were! “

But where did you get the champagne bit?

By the way I attended a memorial service for a dear friend last week ( funeral during Covid restrictions) and we drank champagne.
I don’t think it’s that unusual IF it is true.

SpinningTheSeedsOfLove · 31/03/2022 15:20

It's quite the con trick, isn't it @Roussette, that the royal family pays for lavish events out of 'their own money' like they all have part time cleaning jobs or something and been saving hard.

And why not run the con - it's been working for a long time.

Blossomtoes · 31/03/2022 15:25

I pay for stuff out of my own money without having a cleaning job. This is getting beyond ridiculous now, just listen to yourself @SpinningTheSeedsOfLove and see how pathetic and straw clutching you sound.

Etolie · 31/03/2022 15:29

If I was Harry’s pr I would have advised him to fly into the UK quietly and escort his DGM into the service.
It would have done him a lot of good with the British public.

derxa · 31/03/2022 15:33

I wonder what you think about Nicola Sturgeon attending this event. That well known republican. Along with her husband Peter Murrell. Nobody else had their spouse with them - not even Boris.

Chilledchablis1 · 31/03/2022 15:37

I was surprised to see him @ derxa given the very low profile he has been keeping recently. I was beginning to think Nicola had grounded him.

I know. I expect he was living in a cupboard. She drew much ridicule for not wearing a mask. Us poor devils up here have to thole masks for another two weeks. Perhaps the air around the great and the good contains less Covid

Yes, I noticed that. Also, she wasn't wearing a mask when the rest of Scotland has been forced to.

He doesn't give a stuff about the British public anymore. That much is clear.
JustLyra · 31/03/2022 16:18

I can’t stick her, but I can understand her following England’s rules on masks. If she’d worn one she’d have been accused of politicising the event and using it as a stage.

That one she couldn’t win really.

CathyorClaire · 31/03/2022 16:23

I thought Amanda Thirsk had "stayed gone", Cathy

Yes she has. I'm getting mixed up with the various firings and resignations not all happening at once Grin

CathyorClaire I thought Fawcett had resigned over the cash for honours investigation? Are you saying he's been cleared and come back?

Not as yet but this is the second time he's taken the fall resigned in disgrace over allegations of financial shenanigans. His first very short lived resignation involved allegations of 'throwing his weight around':

Fortunately, PRs don't get to decide these things. Can you imagine Harry turning up at the abbey and having a fight with Andrew about who gets to be escort?
SpinningTheSeedsOfLove · 31/03/2022 16:34

Can't abide Nicola Sturgeon. Is she not a unionist plant? She's so destructive - hammering women's rights in Scotland while the SNP is looking somewhat financially incontinent - that she can't be doing the independence movement any favours.

Now I can't unsee it
