The royal family

Do you think William and Kates tour was 'tone deaf'?

I'm interested to hear from people about this.

FWIW I think it's been an odd tour - almost an unnecessary flaunt of wealth and power.

I don't understand the point of the tour tbh and whilst I don't know if I'd consider it tone deaf as the papers suggest, it's definitely pointless and a reminder for me why the monarchy are becoming so outdated and more irrelevant, though I'm interested to hear others opinions on this.

Every single tour is

People bowing and scraping to someone who came out of a royal uterus/married that person

What is the point?

SpinningTheSeedsOfLove · 27/03/2022 22:24

Elements of it were bloody painful to watch, yes.

Whose idea was it?

NativityDreaming · 27/03/2022 22:24

Yes, it is outdated and irrelevant but also offensive in some ways, considering the state of the world, from energy crisis to pandemic to wars. I don’t think there will ever be a right time again for a royal tour.

FrecklesMalone · 27/03/2022 22:25

It is very embarrassing to watch. The monarchy must be nearing its end.

AnastasiaRomanov · 27/03/2022 22:25

There have been at least two other threads about this. It’s done to death.

Luredbyapomegranate · 27/03/2022 22:26

It was ill considered.

They need better PR managers.

Fridafever · 27/03/2022 22:26

Yes, it seemed ludicrous on a number of levels. You can see why they don’t want to let them go though, part of the terribly hard work we’re meant to be very grateful for.

TokyoSushi · 27/03/2022 22:28

Yes it was terrible, very colonial and just plain old fashioned. Completely ill judged with current events.

However, I think that they've actually realised that from some tweets etc and I'm not sure we'll see a tour quite like that one for a long time.

oovetolove · 27/03/2022 22:29

Yes the timing is so so off, Mage wearing a 10k dress and thousands of pounds of jewellery just put icing on the cake.

She shouldn't need PR to tell her that the monetary value of her outfits was not a good idea with a war in ukraine and rising costs of living. Williams clothes I'm sure we're expensive too, which made it seem more misplaced considering their surroundings.

The entire Royal family are unnecessary .

Theunamedcat · 27/03/2022 22:31

Harry was better accepted the last jubilee tour what has changed?

SickAndTiredAgain · 27/03/2022 22:35

FWIW I think it's been an odd tour - almost an unnecessary flaunt of wealth and power.

I don’t know that it’s been any different from other tours, which may also be unnecessary flaunts of wealth but I’m not sure why this one is particularly odd.

I don't understand the point of the tour tbh

General making-nice? Again, surely the same as any other tour.

I’m not really defending them, I‘d vote to get rid of the RF if there was a referendum on it but I can’t pretend to feel passionately about it. But I don’t really see that this tour was any different to others. I know people have criticised the timing, but I’d assume these things are planned many many months in advance and cancelling would have been criticised as well.

I guess I sort of feel that while we have a RF and the queen is head of the commonwealth, her heir visiting commonwealth countries, particularly ones where she is head of state, is pretty much what I’d expect. It doesn’t really change my view either way in the sense that it doesn’t seem any more tone deaf than the general existence of the royal family in the first place.

oovetolove · 27/03/2022 22:36

@Theunamedcat a lot, a combination of things - some that spring to mind;

M&H Oprah interview

Black Lives Matter

Ukraine war

Costs of living crisis

Covid

All of these things I feel highlight how the royal family have much less of a place on our society and people are not afraid to question it anymore. Many people that never used to, have now found their voice. Including those in the Caribbean protesting.

I've never seen this. Who scrapes what?
ArtVandalay · 27/03/2022 22:43

Terrible. Embarrassing. I can't wait to see them gone.

GirlsTalk250 · 27/03/2022 22:43

Tour wasn’t pointless at all.

Our Queen is also the Queen and Head of State of Belize, Jamaica and Bahamas. Those countries specifically chose to keep her as monarch and Head of State after independence.

Wills & Kate were there as the Queen’s representatives, as she obviously cannot go in person.

Social media gives people a voice but it doesn't mean that those that shout the loudest actually represent the most people. Empty vessels, make the most noise and all that.

And during covid one of the most uplifting moments was when the Queen gave her televised broadcast. Made me tear up. No politician has ever made me do that.

It was a disaster.

LeavesOnTrees · 27/03/2022 22:53

I agree about the dresses. I think wearing a new outfit for every occasion to be completely at odds with their green campaigning.

SickAndTiredAgain · 27/03/2022 22:54

Whilst these countries are active paid up members of the commonwealth, how would it look if the RF actually didn’t visit them?

This is how I feel. Whilst I’d happily get rid of the royal family, while they’re here they can’t just not go.

Yousexybugger · 27/03/2022 22:54

Some really bad optics- touching the kids' hands through a wire fence for one. I'm not sure what they hoped to achieve with this jolly

Lurking9to5 · 27/03/2022 22:58

I don't get a say, I'm Irish, but i don't see what the tours are for. Seems a bit strange, acting like they're doing the country a favour!?

moonbedazzled · 27/03/2022 22:58

@dfendyr. But that's just it. No one from those Caribbean islands bowed and scraped. They shook hands and looked each other in the eye. Only the subservient bow and scrape and it didn't seem to me like any of those govts were subservient.
