William asked by Queen to stop helicopter flying

According to The Sun. www.thesun.co.uk/fabulous/17082002/queen-prince-william-to-stop-flying-helicopter-fears-crash/

No not because she is worried about the environmental impacts, or even the optics of the environmental impact. But because she fears a crash that could kill William, Kate and George,
The article specifically mentions helicopter flights between Anmer Hall and Kensington Palace.

I meant if William crashed his helicopter with his children Alfonso.

While Harry and his children were plausible "spares" then that would be tragic but not the end of the world. But if Harry might opt out then Andrew would be Charles' heir (or possibly Archie's natural regent).

@PlanetNormal

The problem with helicopters is that everything is completely fine until it’s not. At which point you’re fucked, because they glide like falling bricks. They are much more dangerous than even single-engined fixed-wing aircraft which can land safely after a complete loss of power.
They can do the equivalent of gliding - autorotation, but the handling has got to be spot on…..hopefully HRH can reduce the risk by only flying twin engined types…That said helicopters do have a reputation for being a bit “crashy”, Shock especially in non-professional hands.

I think the big issue here for HRH isn’t his previous experience or training, it is the fact the skills erode very quickly if you don’t stay in practice and that means lots of flying every month. If he has got any sense he’ll always have a safety pilot with him.

@TeaSoakedDisasterMagnet

Is that you julieca, having a good old whinge about the royals again under a different username?
You read my mind. I wondered exactly the same thing.

And mine.

Something very strange is going on. So many threads started by the same person.

aliceca · 21/12/2021 15:52

@DobbyTheHouseElk how many RF threads is it acceptable to post?

I feel for the Queen. Poor woman, she's given her whole life to the country and is now a very old lady still trying to do her duties. She's just worried about her family and also trying to safeguard the monarchy. I'll be devastated when she dies.

@ShepherdMoons yes and I think the Queen is right. Or at the very least William and George should fly separately.

They can glide a little way rather than drop out of the sky but basically they land on whatever is in front of them. Many Helicopters like the Air Ambulances are twin engines, they are able to make a controlled landing, William does fly twin engine helicopters.
@vastgrandupgrade that surprises me. A chauffeur would be safer.
There was literally loads of press about him putting the car seat in and driving his wife and first child away from the hospital. How have you missed this?

aliceca · 21/12/2021 20:58

@LadyMonicaBaddingham for good personal reasons I really wasn't paying much attention to what was happening in the press then.

I agred. Helicopters seem a particularly dangerous form of travel.

“Helicopters” is such a diverse subject it’s not fair to generalize.

thepointsguy.co.uk/news/are-helicopters-safe-how-they-stack-up-against-planes-cars-and-trains/

At one end of the helicopter flying world you have the low experience, private pilot bashing around in a single engined helicopter…their stats are I guess so so…

There is also seemingly a bit of a problem with some of the hard charging business/sports men who buy these things and fly them themselves as a means of transport and then don’t recognize when they are getting into situations way outside their ability to resolve.(cf. Colin McRae).

OTOH at the other end of the scale you have twin engined, professionally crewed helicopter operations (sort of thing the Royals generally fly in) which overall in the UK have a very good safety record, arguably safer than a car for many journeys.

I agree. Maybe worth reporting?

aliceca · 22/12/2021 00:12

You want to report me for talking about the Royal Family on the RF board?
This is bullying.

AngryWithH · 22/12/2021 08:21

@rrhuth

This seems odd because as we know the RF are put there by god, and so if god deemed that the Cambridges should not be on the throne, it would be entirely right for whoever was next to be on the throne instead.

We should not stand in the way of the divine's right to choose the next ruler. The Queen may be overstepping here.

@CovidCorvid

If harry refuses it then Archie is king with a nominated advisor type person to act on his behalf until he’s 18yo. How that would be decided I’ve no idea.

But can’t see harry and Meghan declining it to be honest.

I don't think Meghan would take the role even if Harry wanted it - they still have a family and who would drag them into that . They left the UK for very good reasons and those reasons wouldn't change. They seem far happier where they are. But on the other hand ..... if Harry did take it that would be really interesting - would Meghan be queen? Imagine after all the racial abuse thrown at her, she comes back as the mixed race QueenGrin

Queenie herself was never in the direct line of succession until her uncle abdicated.

Of course she was, she just moved up a place.

I mean no one would have thought she was likely to be the monarch when she was a kid
adrianmolesmole · 25/12/2021 15:00

Well, he is a hypocrite, after all, for a so-called "environmentalist".

ssd · 25/12/2021 15:12

Im sure the queen knows the Cambridges are the only hope for the royal family's future
