According to The Sun. www.thesun.co.uk/fabulous/17082002/queen-prince-william-to-stop-flying-helicopter-fears-crash/

No not because she is worried about the environmental impacts, or even the optics of the environmental impact. But because she fears a crash that could kill William, Kate and George,
The article specifically mentions helicopter flights between Anmer Hall and Kensington Palace.

But it is not going to happen. Although William and George should fly separately.

It's morbid but if a helicopter crashed with William and his children on board, there's only Charles (who is an old man) standing between Harry and the throne. That's why I say it!

CovidCorvid · 20/12/2021 18:32

@aliceca

It is not different. Non-commercial helicopter pilots are at risk.
I know technically he’s now a private pilot but surely his ex raf pilot days means he’s better trained and has more experience than the average private pilot?
aliceca · 20/12/2021 18:37

@Aderyn21 true, Which is why William and George should fly separately.

The Royal family use helicopters because the security problems of driving get very complex and expensive .
All mothers worry about their family being safe, however, succession is an issue and although William is an experienced pilot, in the circumstances he should fly with a safety pilot alongside him. Private flying, helicopter or fixed wing is much less safe than driving per hour of travel or per mile.

My brother is an ex Royal Navy pilot, he now flies Air Ambulance helicopters in the US, he has many hours of checks and training every year

aliceca · 20/12/2021 18:50

They fly because it is quicker surely.

@Justkeeppedaling

Because the repercussions of William and family all being killed together are ghastly.

It would make Harry and family next in line, or if he refused the throne, Andrew and family would be next.

The Queen is a sensible woman.

Terrifying.
AnneElliott · 20/12/2021 18:56

I can see the sense in this. I used to take flying lessons and DH used to be allowed to come and sit in the back. I put a stop to that when we had DS as the risks of him losing both parents was just too great.

Badabingbadatinselbum · 20/12/2021 18:57

They are also quite dangerous. Helicopters do crash

MrsTerryPratchett · 20/12/2021 20:26

If Harry refused it, would it go to Archie or Andrew?

AlfonsoTheUnrepentant · 20/12/2021 20:35

I am guessing Archie, then Lilibet, then Andrew.

PlanktonsComputerWife · 20/12/2021 20:35

Both Archie and Lilibet are higher than Andrew.

Thank Christ.

Archie. And then his sister.

Assuming Charlotte and Louis had also died.

CovidCorvid · 20/12/2021 20:37

And I assume harry can’t refuse it on Archie’s behalf. Archie would have to be 18yo before he could refuse?

PlanktonsComputerWife · 20/12/2021 20:37

I don't know why people are making out that Harry, who is thick as two short planks but essentially harmless, would be a worse king than Prince Lolita Jet Andrew.

MrsTerryPratchett · 20/12/2021 20:39

@CovidCorvid

And I assume harry can’t refuse it on Archie’s behalf. Archie would have to be 18yo before he could refuse?
But then who's King until then? Assuming all the others are out.
CovidCorvid · 20/12/2021 20:45

If harry refuses it then Archie is king with a nominated advisor type person to act on his behalf until he’s 18yo. How that would be decided I’ve no idea.

But can’t see harry and Meghan declining it to be honest.

There would be a regency for Archie.

There is no way that Harry and Meghan would refuse.

The problem with helicopters is that everything is completely fine until it’s not. At which point you’re fucked, because they glide like falling bricks. They are much more dangerous than even single-engined fixed-wing aircraft which can land safely after a complete loss of power.

pigsinblanketsrule · 20/12/2021 21:09

Still less dangerous than travelling by road. But I do understand a granny's concerns and the fact that PW wants to do it his way, as a family.

It has introduced a corporate risk that didn't exist when everyone followed the rules rather than their heart.

SilverRingahBells · 20/12/2021 21:17

The problem isn't so much Harry being king, the problem is that if he opts out (taking his children with him) then Andrew becomes Charles' heir.

Having looked at the helicopter statistics I'm with HMQ on this one, I don't think William should be flying his children.

AlfonsoTheUnrepentant · 20/12/2021 21:21

You've got the line of succession incorrect. It's Charles > William > George > Charlotte > Louis > Harry > Archie > Lilibet > Andrew > Beatrice.
latetothefisting · 20/12/2021 21:24

Surely it's a problem that will sort itself out sooner rather than later? Most helicopters aren't exactly roomy - will there be enough space for 5 people plus, I'm assuming at least 2 protection officers, once the kids start getting a bit bigger? So even if William and George were unlucky enough to be a in a fatal crash together you'd still have Charlotte and Louis before Harry.

AlfonsoTheUnrepentant · 20/12/2021 21:28

And thank goodness for that.
