I like the idea and I like the video. (Not that keen on the big desk) And I though MM looked...alive!

Not sure who the other woman was. But there was good chemistry.

Isn't it "veritas" that means truth?

So much for credibility then! 😆

Roussette · 05/08/2021 21:21

Different people find different things funny. Take out Meghan and I expect you might find her amusing Janiie.
in fact I'd put money on it

Her Sean Spicer on SNL was unforgettable Grin

Viviennemary · 05/08/2021 21:22

I don't watch the Oscars. So cringey and phoney. I do glance at the press reports of the dresses though. Grin So I haven't heard of this person. I have heard of the film Bridesmaids but I haven't seen it and have no idea who is in it.

AnnunciataZ · 05/08/2021 21:22

@AnnunciataZ

So much for credibility then! 😆
(That was in response to my earlier comment, nothing to do with Melissa M)

The whole point is that some women need that help to start with and then they can be self sufficient - this really is not about you or what you want. Clearly you have not been able to find the support that you need but there are people who are not in your situation . I can't imagine getting so annoyed for example that M is helping Grenfell instead of doing something that will help me. I am just glad that she has been able to help people who need it.
That’s what you take from my posts? That I’m annoyed M’s initiative is helping others and not me? Yeah ok 😂

The impact of caring responsibilities on women in the workplace has been close to my heart long before Meghan’s birthday and also long before we covid. I haven’t even watched the video and don’t care how cheesy it may or may not be. I care about the message and I disagree with it based on my personal experiences and other women I know in real life who have caring responsibilities that impact work. I should have known better to think that people who fawn over Meghan no matter what she does would actually take this topic seriously.

@Roussette She's excellent in How Can You Ever Forgive Me too. A real departure from her usual roles.
SueSaid · 05/08/2021 21:25

'She looked glowing though. Really lovely'

M did, absolutely fabulous and her delivery is spot on. Can never fault her performances at all.

Roussette · 05/08/2021 21:26

But it isn't just us on here taking it seriously Rainy365
It's more like you are the exception elsewhere

Zuluqueen · 05/08/2021 21:26

@JaniieJones

'But why the activity on a no working royal who posted a video on her birthday on her website?.'

Oh of course that would have been fine. It's the unfunny comedienne that spoilt it tbh. Maybe they shouldve just stuck to mobilising workforces through authentic light shining and left the lolz out of it?

It’s never good enough what she does. I remember last year the criticisms she got about why she was the one reading a book for her son and not the British prince. Those who dislike and hate Meghan always find find a way. It’s okay to think Melissa is not funny & that the video is unfunny. What is not okay is to continually find a way to criticise Meghan for trivial things that others would get a pass for.
AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 05/08/2021 21:26

How Can You Ever Forgive Me is the only thing of hers that I’ve really enjoyed. Richard E Grant is phenomenal in it.

Greenlittle · 05/08/2021 21:28

@Rainy365, so what have you done to help women if this is something you deeply care about? How should we measure your effectiveness?

OP posts:
Roussette · 05/08/2021 21:29

AnnunctiaZ

Yes! I've seen most of her films. Blush The author and the letters. I'll say no more, don't want to spoil it for anyone.
She was great in that, I think it was her Oscar nomination wasn't it?

AnnunciataZ · 05/08/2021 21:31

@Roussette yes, and she was nominated for Bridesmaids too.

PreparationPreparationPrep · 05/08/2021 21:35

@Rainy365 - but that is what you wrote No amount of mentoring is going to help me. What I need^* is childcare for my disabled child. Women who had to leave the workforce due to covid was mostly because of caring responsibilities, often due to society’s expectation that it’s the woman who has to give up work and the men can carry on as they are.

Of course I would always welcome opportunities for professional development but that’s not the message of this initiative and in my particular circumstances wouldn’t help me get back to work.*^

I'm not sure why I'm wrong to come away thinking your post wasn't about you.

PreparationPreparationPrep · 05/08/2021 21:37

Sorry @Rainy365 my copy and paste didn't work but I think you can see what I'm referring to

PreparationPreparationPrep · 05/08/2021 21:44

@Rainy365
I also have caring responsibilities that impact my work - many do. But that still doesn't make her message any less valid. there can be other issues impacting women and work - childcare is just one affecting some and not all women. what about those who don't have caring responsibilities, are
Unskilled, little Education or careers advice. So my point is that this one is not for you or the people you know but will be welcomed by many.

Rainy365 · 05/08/2021 21:48
@Rainy365, so what have you done to help women if this is something you deeply care about? How should we measure your effectiveness?
I’m in a group with a large amount of other women (specifically mothers of disabled children) trying to tackle at a local level with our local authority/MP.
Measure and judge our effectiveness however you wish.

LolaSmiles · 05/08/2021 21:50

I thought it was tone deaf but most celebrityvanityoutreach projects are.
My thoughts entirely.
It would be brilliant if every now and then the celebrity projects were less about looking good in the press and a bit more meaningful.

I look at the projects near me to help people back into work, and charities working with women who've fled domestic violence and are starting over, and the industry specific coaching I know of in a few companies and I see genuine people working their arses off trying to change things. There's people who have spent years being committed to improving a particular area and offering long term support.
I don't buy that most celebrities with these sorts of projects are actually willing to graft for change. They like to do some press releases, look good, do something tokenistic and then move onto the next vanity project or the next world issue they suddenly become passionate about. It's not just a Meghan thing, it's a celeb thing. One minute they're passionate about ending violence against women or wanting to save the world from climate change, but then the plight of Scotish orange growers is trending so in 4 weeks time that will be their passion and their last passion vanishes.

Oh I see why you took it that way, but I was responding to Rousette who asked me directly about if I was offered mentoring in my particular field (because I questioned how Adele et al mentoring in the real world) Which is why I was saying that it still wouldn’t help me even if there was someone relevant to mentor me.

MarshaBradyo · 05/08/2021 21:54

I think it’s the way it’s done and the luxury of it.

Just feels off - but then maybe US audience would find it more ok.

Greenlittle · 05/08/2021 21:55

I have no desire to judge your effectiveness. I think every initiative helps and it must be really hard as a mum with disabled children.

I’m surprised that you are so negative about other initiatives. You do realise there are lots of different needs, so why be judgemental of how other women are trying to help? Perhaps MM knows women who want mentoring and or help with contacts and she is doing something about it?

I think loads of women work in the service industry and many have lost jobs, nothing to do with child care responsibilities, as such. Perhaps these women would love contacts, cv help if any other pointers to change industries, set up their own business or whatever

I don't react well to Meghan's obvious consciousness of herself as a brand. The video didn't make me feel supported as a woman, it made me feel that I was being manipulated.
The idea is borrowed from the Mandela Foundation where South Africans are asked to do 67 minutes of service for Mandela's 67 years of activism.
