The royal family

HBO's The Royals

I just watched an advertisement for HBO's The Royals which is a satire of royal family life and focuses on Prince George. It openly mocks Prince George as being out of touch with other children, rude to staff, arrogant and has him cursing. I'm horrified and wondering how others feel about this. Unfortunately Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis also appear and are mocked. The only relief is that Archie and Lillibet weren't featured (in the ad at least) so I certainly hope that they will be left alone. I'm horrified that network and actors (Orlando Bloom voices Prince Harry) who advocate an end to bullying would then openly bully children. How can Orlando Bloom expect his children's privacy to be protected if he his comfortable to take part in mocking a young boy. Am I missing something 'funny' about this show or is this as awful as it appears. I'm disgusted that this passes for humour and that well known actors are taking part in mocking children - any children! Apologies if there is already a thread on this, I couldn't find one.

I agree it’s awful. What platform will it be shown in the U.K.?

Aspiringmatriarch · 01/08/2021 14:05

I agree, it's in really poor taste. I'd be so upset if it was my child being feature. Adults are fair game I guess (e.g. The Windsors, which is a bit gentle in any case) but not minors who have no choice over being in the public eye.

SquirryTheSquirrel · 01/08/2021 14:08

I would like to see the RF abolished, but it's not on to make fun of its children - not their fault they were born into a ludicrous institution.

doscervesas · 01/08/2021 14:17

Shameful.

It's a disgrace that such a thing would be made.

MoonlightWanderer · 01/08/2021 14:19

I think it's called "The Prince". The Royals was the one will Liz Hurley, wasn't it?

I also think kids should be off limits. The Windsors never featured the kids or The Queen.

MrsEko · 01/08/2021 14:20

I could hardly believe what I was seeing! I don't understand how it's on the TV. A programme mocking an actual small child. It's unbelievable.

Gilmorehill · 01/08/2021 15:03

The clips I’ve seen were absolutely rubbish. Nothing funny about them at all - not that anything could justify making fun of children.

SueSaid · 01/08/2021 15:22

This was discussed briefly on the lilibet thread and general consensus was yes it is grim and crass.

I also find it odd Orlando bloom being involved, I'd have thought he would have been better than that tbh.

Dntevenknowit · 01/08/2021 15:23

Its awful

Flyingantday · 01/08/2021 15:47

YANBU, horrible to bully children like that

Viviennemary · 01/08/2021 16:55

This has already been mentioned. Everyone agreed it was total garbage. Of course they shouldn't be targetting children.

Dreamstate · 01/08/2021 17:08

As you say OP its a satire programme. Do you know the definition of satire, here let me remind you:

the use of humour, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues.

People...being anyone of any age.

If you don't enjoy satire then don't watch it. Its not bullying.

smilesy · 01/08/2021 17:17

I enjoy satire, but it has to be good satire which this does not appear to be. Just being labelled satire does not make it successful. Or appropriate.

Well its al subjective isn't it. You might not think its good satire others do. Like when you wafch comedy, some people think the jok goes too far others don't.

Hence why if you warch this types of things there is a spectrum but end of the day you warch it whebmn a certain level of understanding of what its about and what to expect.

Serenster · 01/08/2021 17:52

I have no problem with the concept of satire in general, but it’s a little difficult surely to “expose the stupidity and vices” of three children under seven? I mean, they haven’t demonstrated any, so far as I’m aware. So it’s not satire, just poor taste.

smilesy · 01/08/2021 17:57

@Dreamstate. I agree it is subjective. But so far, the majority view seems to be that this particular production is just not funny or very good.

Gilmorehill · 01/08/2021 18:05

Exactly. Apart from the effect on children’s mental well-being, how can you create satire about children who live private lives and we know nothing about? It beggars belief that anyone would attempt to defend it. Astonishingly I suspect that some of those who defend it are the same people who believe MM, an actress in her thirties, was ‘bullied’ by the press.
Dreamstate · 01/08/2021 18:17

Well how can fhe media make stuff up about many famous people based on sk called sources but many of you believe it.

You even dismiss the bullying the press has done to meghan, you refuse to even admit they have! You know the press who made racist remarks about her child but of course that's all an illusion.

End of the day admit your bias at least.

Roussette · 01/08/2021 18:51

I think MM was bullied by the press continually.

And I think this satire cartoon is awful. No child should be subjected to this sort of derision. They are young children and I abhor it.
So I'm an exception to what you think.

Samcro · 01/08/2021 19:06

Horrid idea to do this about a child.

No surprise to see someone still gets a meghan bash in.

Reallyreallyborednow · 01/08/2021 19:11

The Windsors, on the othe hand, i found very funny and spot on 😂

Dreamstate · 01/08/2021 19:43

I mean I have to laugh about how people find it horrid for a child but not if its an adult. If you truly believe its bullying then you will stand against bullying no matter the age.

Gilmorehill · 01/08/2021 20:29

There’s a difference between criticism or satire about a person in public life and bullying someone in public life. Not every negative thing written about a public figure is bullying.

Flyingantday · 01/08/2021 23:10

I don’t know why Meghan has to be brought in to this apart from the fact that both the Cambridge’s and sussexes are having to deal with various incursions into their children’s privacy and childhoods, and are currently dealing with it in different ways. I hope it can be a point of understanding that can bring the families back into closer contact in the future.

PurpleOkapi · 02/08/2021 01:28

I don't believe this type of satire is "bullying" when directed at an adult who chose to become a politically significant public figure. I'm not sure how much choice those who are royals by birth really had about any of it, but those who married in freely chose it. This type of criticism of political figures is a hallmark of a healthy democracy. If some of it goes a bit further than I find tasteful, that doesn't mean it's inherently wrong.

I'm not sure I'd call it "bullying" in reference to a child, either, but there's really no redeeming social value in mocking a child who didn't choose to be in that position and has done nothing to deserve any of it.
