The royal family

If Diana had lived and re-married

As it is coming up to what would have been Diana's 60th birthday, I sometimes wonder if she lived what her life would have turned out like. Obviously its only speculation and we will never know.

If Diana re-married and possibly had more children what effect do you think this would have had on her public image?

Would she still have been a member of the royal family if she re-married and would she still be seen as royal?

Unlikely her relationship with Dodi would have gone on much further, those very public affection displays were for Haznet Khans benefit.
William seemed to have a sensible head even then, so I don't think she would have had too many high profile public flings that could affect her relationship with her sons.
Having said that, I really don't know where she would be right now. I do think however, she would struggle with the media attention being taken from her and being more focused on Kate and Meghan.

Yes, beneath all the randomness I feel she was too shred to take up with a playboy manchild seriously or long term. She was trying to make Hasnat jealous.

RickiTarr · 18/06/2021 18:56

Shrewd^

Labradooodle · 18/06/2021 19:11

Id never heard of hasnat khan until after she died. So it might have been known but it wasnt public. Why did he so desperately want to avoid it being publicly known?

Because he was a serious man with an important job. He didn’t want the media circus. He didn’t want the tabloids taking his life apart.

@MissTrip82

I don’t think she would have remarried. I think the title was too important to her. She was fundamentally a typically conservative member of the aristocracy in my opinion.

I feel quite ill now at the way she was treated when she was alive. As a little girl I had a paper doll book of Diana with various outfits. She didn’t exist as a person to me at all. I think she was a person to very few people in her life. I see the other royals in a similar position but less famous. There are very very few people in their lives who actually have their best interests at heart.

I find that much sadder than the fact that sometimes people say she had affairs when she’s been dead for years.

Well, what you're saying is basically that no post menopausal woman can ever retain affection!

I'm saying that I think that as she got older, there would be likely to be less media and public toleration for the less 'dignified' side of her public life, and yes, definitely in large part to do with ingrained misogynistic, ageist ideas about how women should look and behave at different stages of their lives.

Public opinion can also be very fickle -- look how the Sussexes went from fairytale interracial martyrs oppressed by a stuffy, racist, bullying institution to vapid, moany, money-mad self-publicists insulting a dutiful widowed queen almost overnight.

And I don't know about Diana getting 'National Treasure' status -- I think the one thing NTs have in common is a sort of perceived reliable, unchanging stability and a certain twinkliness. I mean, the 'lists' of national treasures vary, but people generally agree on Judi Dench, Trevor MacDonald, David Attenborough, Maggie Smith, David Jason, the Queen etc. I'm sure they've all had their struggles, but their public image is pretty 'stable'.

I don't think they were ever fairytale interracial martyrs etc or vapid money money etc....
There were not those who thought the former and moved to the latter. Not AFAIC anyway

I think they were made out to be quite the glam interesting /exciting couple at one time. So genuinely don't know why they weren't content to continue with that. Cant see how they can achieve that sort of status over there.

JustLyra · 19/06/2021 21:40

@DavidTheDog

HM Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother famously detested the term "Dowager Queen".

For a few months of the last century (1952) there were three queens:

  • HM The Queen
  • HM Queen Elizabeth
  • HM Queen Mary.
I read somewhere that Queen Mary was technically/formally Queen Grandmother, but preferred HM Queen Mary. However, I am unable to find a source to back this up.
There’s never been a title of Queen Grandmother. Mary was the Queen Mother, but preferred HM Queen Mary so it may have been that.

Neither Queen Mary nor Queen Alexandra liked or used the Queen Mother title.

The Queen is also not fond of the Dowager title. She allowed her Aunt, the Dowager Duchess of a Kent to be known as HRH Princess Marina (she had been HRH Princess Marina of Greece pre-marriage) rather than the Dowager title. She also did the same for Princess Alice - the Dowager Duchess of Gloucester - when her husband died.

Really?
They looked good, they look good now... but the criticism started before they were married. When they were 'new', it was all exciting but there was always an undercurrent and criticism waiting to happen.

They are achieving quite the status over in the US, from what I read. The bulk of the barbs come from .co.uk not .us but hey, it depends what we look at or subscribe to, I suppose.

Tlollj · 20/06/2021 14:05

@JustLyra have you seen the photo of the three queens at funeral of George VI? Queen Mary Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and the present Queen ?

JustLyra · 20/06/2021 14:10

@Tlollj The one with Queen Mary in the middle?

RickiTarr · 20/06/2021 15:02

The famous one in mourning veils?

What was the criticism about, before they were married?
Roussette · 20/06/2021 18:39

I posted about it on another current thread. Endless threads on here before they married and as they married.

Do you read a lot of American press, @ Rousette?
Roussette · 21/06/2021 07:49

I read a broad spread from all over the world.

Why?

BirdsandBeesmakinghay · 21/06/2021 11:51

That must be very time consuming.

Roussette · 21/06/2021 14:44

Strange you are asking me this?

No. I don't spend hours on reading news from all over the world. I pick up on articles that interest me from lots of different sources. Hope that answer satisfies you!

Would you like to inform me of your reading choices and how much time you spend on them too? Fair's fair after all
😂

BirdsandBeesmakinghay · 21/06/2021 20:40

It’s just a question Rousette. I can’t imagine reading all the Press from the US and also keeping up with UK news too. You seem to be pretty sure how M and H are being received over there.

Roussette · 21/06/2021 21:30

Hahahaha...
No idea what you're on about, not sure you know either.

Enjoy what you read and have yourself a nice evening. Maybe question someone else now.

Viviennemary · 21/06/2021 21:47

Sometimes I watch clips from the Australian news. They are very unpopular there. Austrslians aren't keen on phoney posers.

Roussette · 21/06/2021 21:51

I read some Australian news, I don't think some over there are keen on any of the RF and are on the way perhaps to wanting to become a Republic.

Phoney posers... gosh, how rude.

Angrycat2768 · 28/07/2021 20:30

@Samcro

I think his hesitancy is entirely sensible and honourable.

have to disagree, seems a bit mean to keep someone waiting like that.
maybe he goes by the be mean and keep them keen saying.

I agree. If she had gone off and done something with her 20's then maybe she could have made an informed decision about what she wanted, but she didnt. She sat around and waited for him to make a decision. After a time, that becomes your only option. I think William saw what his parents marriage was like and wanted to make sure she was a suitable Royal bride. The Royals wanted to break a young girl into their mould but she grew up with her own mind. William left a young girl dangling until she was a 30 year old who had hung around for a decade, putting up with him chasing other women, picking her up and putting her down as he felt. She is a perfect Royal wife. One who will do as she is told.
