Hugo Vickers made me laugh with his phrasing. So British to say “a bit naughty”. Grin

Also, seriously high lights how many people don’t understand the rules or can’t explain the rules well, and no American has a hope of grasping our quaint & complicated rules and institutions, really.

Sorry, it’s the Daily Fail, but funny.

Prince Andrew is damaging the monarchy because he is being protected by it.

H&M are shining a light on it in a different way.

Roussette · 11/03/2021 11:34

I'm just amazed that people say the Monarchy's popularity is at an all time high.
I honestly think it's at an all time low. And the idea of abolishing them is growing by the day. That's how I read public opinion but maybe the people I know and what I read, and where, gives me that view.

That is not my personal opinion necessarily, because nothing will happen in my lifetime.

But they just have to change.
The RF cannot go on like it is.

Opacity on their wealth and finances, Andrew, H&M, all the Queen's children but one divorced with ensuing scandals... all these things happen for a reason. That's why I think change is needed.

The Queen has kept these events at bay, I am not sure Charles will be able to do the same.

stairway · 11/03/2021 11:45

I think Roussette, the public for once are feeling a little bit sympathetic towards Charles probably for the first time in his life. It can’t have been easy for him dealing with bickering wives and sons. Then a tell all interview which branded him a racist despite the fact that he welcomed Meghan into the family, the family she never had apparently.

Roussette · 11/03/2021 11:51

Who branded him a racist? If you mean M&H, they didn't. (Unless I've missed something)

If you are a fan of Prince Charles, I suggest you don't say that, it won't help his popularity !

stairway · 11/03/2021 12:00

I’m not a fan of his in particular. I’m not sure why that would affect his popularity either way though. I don’t think he has had an easy life and I think he would be ok as King. I think Meghan and Harry certainly insinuated that he was the royal racist and that is how it has been interpreted at least.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 11/03/2021 12:04

It would have been an absolute PR coup for the RF to have a biracial baby on the balcony though. Instantly making them appear relatable, modern, diverse ... but with no (or practically no) chance of said baby ending up on the throne and causing the old guard to choke on their soup.

There already has been actually. They're just not as high up the line of succession (31st and 32nd maybe?). Two of the Duke of Gloucester's grandchildren are half Maori and have been on the balcony a couple of times.

Roussette · 11/03/2021 12:10

They did not insinuate it was him. It could be any number of people.

As for him 'not having an easy life' that is hysterical. He spends most of his time at Highgrove (I know 2 people who have been round the gardens, it is gobsmacking) pottering around in his absolutely massive garden that has everything anyone could dream of. He loves gardening and he must be in total heaven with his difficult life lol

Attached is a map of it.

Not an easy life 🤣

Roussette all the royals live in luxurious surroundings, the guided cage as Harry put it. Meghan has only had to deal with the media cruelty and ridicule for a few years and could choose to escape it. Charles has had it all his life. He used to get called big ears and blamed for everything involving Diana. I think if you can be sympathetic towards Meghan then surely that can be extended to Charles?

Roussette · 11/03/2021 12:40

I'm at a loss here.

Never seen him called big ears .. I mean come on... you are joking here aren't you. Are you equating something I've never heard of with the hundreds of thousands of awful headlines MM has received?

Diana... maybe... he behaved appallingly having an affair whilst still with her.

He has got away remarkably lightly. I rarely see headlines about PC now.

As for saying he's 'not had an easy life' I am honestly speechless.

Blueberries0112 · 11/03/2021 12:44

The big ears probably exist way before social media.

Blueberries0112 · 11/03/2021 12:49

Here is what the first thing popped up on my search on newspapers.com

Using the Keyword: prince Charles ear

MrsTabithaTwitchit · 11/03/2021 12:51

@Rousette if you go back to the 196Os and 70s he was called jug ears and there are loads of parodies of his ears , just google his Spitting Image character .

Darker · 11/03/2021 12:54

I'm sure Charles has experienced deep unhappiness etc etc but its not really about who has suffered the most.

FWIW I thought he did a good job walking MM part-way down the aisle on her wedding day. I felt hopeful when I saw that.

Blueberries0112 · 11/03/2021 12:55

Here is the mug the article was talking about, I think

It was “, 'a bit naughty' to imply Archie 'couldn't be a prince because of the possible colour of his skin' when it was due to strict rules,...”
Roussette · 11/03/2021 12:58

1981... yes I'm sure there were headlines out there about his ears!

I am just taking issue with 'he has not had an easy life'.

It will be too outing to say the context... but I know of people and families who have really not had an easy life, in fact their lives have been horrendous through no fault of their own, and let's just say, I don't put PC into that category.

I'm sure he has been unhappy at times, lots of people have, but he has never had the sort of worry and desperation that a lot of people face.

LApprentiSorcier · 11/03/2021 12:59

When talking of Charles, let's not forget Camillagate - 'I want to be your tampon'.

If there could be such a thing as something going viral in pre-internet days, that was it.

The man was a laughing stock for weeks - although really this was just an intimate, nonsense conversation such as anyone might have with a lover.

Roussette · 11/03/2021 13:01

Let me rephrase that... because I don't know how desperate PC has been in his life, and the last thing I want to do is to dismiss his feelings

Stratfordplace · 11/03/2021 13:03

Rousette just because you haven’t heard it doesn’t mean it’s not true.

I like PC and Camilla, who I think would be great fun and not someone to take offence at everything.

JustLyra · 11/03/2021 13:08

I still can’t believe we heard the audio recording of that sentence coming out of his mouth!

They may not have said he was the one who made the racist comments, but it was said that it was a senior member of the family. It was then clarified that it wasn’t the Queen or Philip, and by the fact that Meghan called Kate a good person it’s pretty safe to assume it wasn’t her. That doesn’t leave that many options and given the awkwardness when Harry was talking about his father the link is being made in many places.

SenecaFallsRedux · 11/03/2021 14:58

The “must marry another royal” unspoken rule died out long before Charles married Diana.

Of King George V’s five children who married only one married another royal.

It never was a rule among British royals. Only two of Henry VIII's six wives were royal.

I'm just amazed that people say the Monarchy's popularity is at an all time high.I honestly think it's at an all time low

Last time I looked it was still hovering around a 70% approval rate - though it varies hugely by age, is probably influenced by "the last story" and is almost certainly on the back of the Queen's popularity

I know. I just said that. A couple of minutes before your post

Stratfordplace · 11/03/2021 20:07

Apologies

Roussette · 11/03/2021 20:49

@Stratfordplace
No problem Smile

Ihatefish · 12/03/2021 10:12

@Roussette

You see I think that this really depends on your circles I’m in my mid 40s and I would say 80-90% of the people I know support the monarchy and like having them -in real life and amongst my Facebook friends I’ve not heard a single positive opinion on H&M

But... that is two seperate issues. Why lump them together?

The Monarchy
Harry & Meghan

Because the two things aren’t separate and are intertwined, at least for me, and the only perspective one can honestly give is ones own, anything else is guesswork. They might be separate things in your world but not in mine
