@rousette

I'm sure you won't mind that your excellent link gets 'pinned'.

Some of the things MM did before marrying H.

Doesn't Prince Charles have his own personal harpist?

Roussette · 31/07/2020 14:57

Honest? Shock

ButteryPuffin · 31/07/2020 14:57

When I was in London a while I was near Buckingham Palace (actually went to see whatever exhibition was on at the Royal Gallery) and read the notice about how it has 19 state rooms, which are used for banqueting. 19. And the first thought that came into my head then was to wonder how many homeless families you could accommodate in that space. I'm fairly well disposed to the royals in some ways but that did bring home just how much they have at their disposal, even if they don't own it as such. That's one reason why I think many people find any of the royals complaining about their lot so unpalatable. Cage it might be but it's a very lavishly gilded one.

Roussette · 31/07/2020 14:59

Lavishly gilded indeed.

I wish my lady of the bedchamber would put the clean sheets back on our bed. I'm too hot to do it

There was that story about Charles's servant putting toothpaste on the toothbrush for him, which, if true, is something any neurotypical adult (without physical disabilities hampering them) should be embarrassed at getting another person to do for them.

Roussette · 31/07/2020 15:00

No idea if the story was true, didn't feel it was a bit of folklore because it's far too embarrassing!

Roussette · 31/07/2020 15:01

Did feel, I meant to say

MeghanSussex · 31/07/2020 15:01

the busbys should go (think they're called that)

They're called bearskins. A busby is smaller and quite different.

My uncle was in the Grenadier Guards and wore a bearskin when on duty in ceremonial uniform. He was always quite offended if someone referred to it as a busby.

ButteryPuffin · 31/07/2020 15:01

Roussette I feel your pain. Changing sheets is one of my most hated jobs. I'm really bad at it and it takes ages and makes me sweaty. It is one thing I absolutely would get staff to do if I had them Smile

Roussette · 31/07/2020 15:03

And me! Such a waste of energy
I am thinking of appointing DH Master of the Bedchamber so he'll do it today Grin

Samcro · 31/07/2020 15:03

busby.
wasn't that the bird in the BT ads(shows age)

Roussette · 31/07/2020 15:04

Bearskins! Yes, I remember now

ajandjjmum · 31/07/2020 15:15

@Roussette

Apparently there are Royal Households, Households, and Lesser Households. Equirries, Extra equirries, Ladies in Waiting, Extra Ladies in Waiting, ladies of the bedchamber, temporary ladies of the bedchamber and then... 'women' of the bedchamber, extra women of the bedchamber and temporary women of the bedchamber. And too many other posts too numerous to type out. What the heck difference is there between a lady and a woman of the bedchamber.

1,000 staff just for the Royal household Shock Shock Shock

Gosh, the unemployment figures would soar if we got rid of the Royal Family!

Yes - in that he has a 'go to' harpist that he uses for certain occasions when he is entertaining.

She probably loves the fact that she is seen as Prince Charles' harpist!

Serenster · 31/07/2020 15:18

Buttery, allegedly the toothpaste story came from when Charles had injured his shoulder after falling while playing polo (that bit is verifiably true) and so had to wear a sling. His valet did a number of things to help him during this period, including putting toothpaste on his toothbrush, but it’s not something he generally does. The story has run and run though!

He had a broken arm at the time - so sort of understandable.

Trouble is the electrics wouldn't be up to standard and the roof leaks!
YouSayWhat · 31/07/2020 15:21

I was thinking that ajmum! The Royal Family are a great (as in number) employer. And I will have to google, but I think they are also keen to provide more equal opportunities amongst their staff. I did notice a few female members of staff outside St George’s chapel at Windsor for Meghan & Harry’s wedding. I also noticed that they weren’t allowed to look at anyone walking past and had to bow their heads and look at the ground.

As has the one about him having seven eggs boiled for him for breakfast but only the perfect one being eaten. Complete myth, promulgated by Jeremy Paxman, naughty man.

I must say I'm picky about my boiled eggs, but I couldn't be bothered to boil seven on the off chance!

I love it 😳 I even iron the sheets (I do have an excellent and fast iron though)
ajandjjmum · 31/07/2020 15:34

I too iron the sheets thisenglishlife! What iron do you use - I find it an absolute pain! Smile

TheChristmasPrincess · 31/07/2020 15:36

Omg it has its own Wikipedia page 😆

ajandjjmum · 31/07/2020 15:37

So apparently Prince Andrew tried to help negotiate a better plea deal for JE - in which case I don't believe he can be innocent. Didn't before, but kept thinking it'll all come out in the wash, but knowing your friend is a paedophile and then actively supporting him is truly sick.

YouSayWhat · 31/07/2020 15:40

Where did you read that ajmum?
In a nice way, you are a font of knowledge this afternoon Grin
