@rousette

I'm sure you won't mind that your excellent link gets 'pinned'.

Some of the things MM did before marrying H.

totally agree @myrtleWilson

The criticism the females in the RF get is crazy compared to the males. Nice videos of William on twitter re the Crouch podcast.

Just also seen that tiaragate is featured in the book and H&M put the blame on Angela Kelly. Brave them going up against her Wink

mrscampbellblackagain · 29/07/2020 19:48

I suspect most people put way more blame for the current situation on Harry than Meghan. He comes across as a very spoilt over indulged man. Honestly, I wish Meghan all the best with him as I doubt it will be much fun.

Samcro · 29/07/2020 19:50

@Oldbutstillgotit

Diana was asked my PP and she - apparently- looked him in the eye and denied being involved . Her BIL Robert Fellowes worked for HM and he also asked her and again she denied it .
Thanks, i think i might be mixing it up with the interview she did.
Samcro · 29/07/2020 19:52

I often think that Pw took so long to marry K as he didn't want to make the same mistake his parents made.
H couldn't really do that due to his and Megahans ages.
It must be very hard to marry in to a family that lives in another time.

mrscampbellblackagain · 29/07/2020 19:54

I think you are totally right @samcro. MM didn't have the luxury of time.

lifestooshort123 · 29/07/2020 19:57

I totally agree - he comes across as petulant and rather dim. For someone as articulate and committed as MM it must be excruciating sometimes. I was very keen on her until the engagement interview when I revised my opinion but I think a lot of the vitriol she gets is because she is always putting her head above the parapet. If they'd stayed tucked up at Frogmore, kept their beaks out of anything contraversial and released photos of darling baby every month then interest would have waned.

Bumlooksbig · 29/07/2020 19:58

Are you saying all the posts by the new posters on here i.e. Puzzled, Tofino, WaterWish, Sunbathing, O'Vienna are all fawning posts?

Not I'm not. I am asking if the title of the thread implies that we are ONLY allowed to say nice positive things about H&M. Because if that ISN'T the case then why the title?

H&M threads have a habit of being closed down without warning on the grounds of "idle speculation and gossip" (whatever that means). Apparently anything along the lines of "I fear for PH's mental health" etc. etc. is a big no no because that isn't fact as reported in the daily rag. It's just someone's opinion. So basically you can say "The Daily Mail reported today" but you can't speculate on the state of M&H's marriage or whether they really care about the environment or whether PW had an affair and KM forgave him because that isn't fact it's speculation and gossip.

Back to my original question. (And "Saint Meghan" was a JOKE, btw). Are we allowed to say negative things or is this a "We love the Royal Family and won't hear anything against them" sort of discussion?

derxa · 29/07/2020 19:58

When Morton’s book came out I didn’t believe she was involved and remember arguing with a friend about it . When the truth came out I felt so let down . The content of Morton's book was shocking and when I found out that most of it came from Diana herself I was saddened because it was actually true. I felt sad for Diana.
I haven't read the Omid Scobie book but from what I've read in the extracts it all sounds a bit pathetic. Kate didn't take Meghan shopping? William is a snob? The courtiers are obstructive? It hardly compares to Diana discovering for sure that her husband didn't love her and always loved another woman. That she suffered from bulimia and had severe depression.
If I found out that Meghan and Harry had collaborated with the book I would shrug my shoulders and say who cares.
Hopefully when the pandemic is over, Harry and Meghan will, like the rest of us begin to enjoy life more fully

myrtleWilson · 29/07/2020 19:59

@Roussette - yes I like it too and always felt Myrtle W was one of the most sadly tragic figures and whilst as a youngster I was fascinated by Gatsby and Daisy and Tom, on reflection I think Myrtle was much more multi dimensional and I'd love to have read a Myrtle prequel!

Roussette · 29/07/2020 20:03

Because if that ISN'T the case then why the title?

It's just trying to put a more positive slant on H&M, as opposed to a negative one.

I'm not in charge of the thread. I don't love the RF and there's been interesting discussion on here so far.

Totally agree. I felt so sorry for Diana - the revelations in the Morton book were huge. I couldn't believe what I was reading.

The M and H book certainly doesn't have the same level of drama or interest.

Roussette · 29/07/2020 20:07

myrtle that reminds me, I should watch GGatsby again Smile

MissEliza · 29/07/2020 20:11

I remember being shocked and saddened about the Diana book as well. It was unbelievable to think what a face she'd been putting on for years when she was clearly very unhappy. Yes I know she was no angel.

TofinoSurf · 29/07/2020 20:13

I really need to read the Andrew Morton book. I've actually met him but all I knew at the time was he had written a book about Diana. I didn't know how controversial it was.

He was on a ski holiday with royal correspondent James Whittaker and family. I was the in-chalet nanny for the children in the group (not his, if he has any). Also went on a summer holiday with the Whitaker's and got a mention in his newspaper column! (The Mirror).

I didn't really take a huge amount of interest in the royals then. I do remember James talked about them a lot but I didn't take much interest (I was about 20). What a missed opportunity!!

Roussette · 29/07/2020 20:14

Yes, it was very shocking. And then there was the interview with Martin Bashir...
Can anyone believe it was 25 years ago? Shock

AlphabetABC · 29/07/2020 20:14

Looks like the tiara story was true after all.

lakeswimmer · 29/07/2020 20:15

I've never aimed any vitriol at H or M. I certainly don't hate them. I'm following what's going on because they stepped back from their royal roles in a very messy way (after what had been a very short time for MM) and I'm curious about how that's going to work out for them in the short and long term. They also look hypocritical - they definitely want press attention and publicity but are trying to make out as if they don't. It makes people sceptical about them which then leads to criticism.

The level of personal detail in the book is nuts. I can't remember what I was drinking on the night I got together with DH. Who the hell needs to know that? How my relationship started with DH is a private matter between the two of us; I wouldn't discuss it with anyone else apart from maybe our DC. I certainly wouldn't talk to other people about it and allow it to go in a book. Those are not the actions of people who want a private life.

Roussette · 29/07/2020 20:15

Wow Tofino that's fascinating!

Samcro · 29/07/2020 20:18

I remember watching that, her make up was impressive. Back then it was kind of groundbreaking, a royal talking like that. I don't think its the same now, as the younger royals seem slightly more open. Am looking forward to the princess anne documentary. Am taping it.
myrtleWilson · 29/07/2020 20:28

rousette - it was one of my a-level texts and I loved it immediately. Thomas Hardy and I did not get on anywhere near as well Grin - I swear there is a description of a pond which over a page long - I was Hmm - its a frigging pond Tommo.

A thread diversion - which fictional books do we imagine are the principals in the RF's favourite (please no-one mention PA) and lets try to be kind but gentle ribbing allowed!

I'd suggest. HMQ: the Bible, PP: Lt Hornblower or Master & Commander; PC: My Family and other animals: Camilla: Jilly Cooper,
PW: Fever Pitch, KM: Pride and Prejudice, PH: Bravo Two Zero; MM: Beloved

Wink
lakeswimmer · 29/07/2020 20:31

I like the idea of Camilla reading Jilly Cooper Grin I've heard she's a big reader - promoting reading is one of her causes.

derxa · 29/07/2020 20:34

KM: Pride and Prejudice Hmm

Puzzledandpissedoff · 29/07/2020 20:35

Diana's BIL Robert Fellowes worked for HM and he also asked her (about Morton's book) and again she denied it

I felt quite sorry for the poor sod over that; he might have been the very definition of the stuffed-shirt courtier, but that must have been - what's the in-phrase? - awks

Had to laugh about the claim that Tiaragate was Angela Kelly's fault though. Even if it happened at all, does anyone seriously imagine a dresser - no matter how well liked - would have the final word over HM's jewels?

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 29/07/2020 20:36

Aren't Jilly and Camilla friends? I'm sure I read that somewhere. And isn't Rupert supposed to be based on her first husband?

I would love to think of her sitting down with a gin and a cigarette and a copy of Imogen.

Roussette · 29/07/2020 20:37

Love the book choices... Charles will be an environmental book or gardening, he loves his gardening especially at Highgrove. The gardens there are truly beautiful, my DSis has been round, her pics were beautiful
