The royal family

To wish all the royal family would become private citizens?

I wish they would all stand down
I'm sick of the virtue signalling, wealth hoarding and hypocrisy while there is so much poverty deprivation and homelessness in the UK with the NHS, mental healthcare and social care in semi collapse.

I don't want a royal family for the UK. I used to but I have really changed my mind.

Nobody visits the UK to see the royal family fgs. And if people will only donate to charities if a royal is a patron they they need a slap.

“As for wealth hoarding they give way more than private citizen rich do.” They HAVE a hell of a lot more than even rich private citizens!

“For example Prince Charles started the organic food movement in the U.K” bull! The modern organic farming movement in the uk began in the early 40’s Charles wasn’t even born then! He jumped on a bandwagon!

“RSPB
RSPCA
RSPCC
That RS stands for Royal Society- started by, run for free by, and funded by royals.”

Royal charters are pretty much meaningless now. And doesn’t mean what you very WRONGLY think it means, in other words you’re talking shite!

https://www.rspb.org.uk/about-the-rspb/about-us/our-history/

https://www.rspca.org.uk/whatwedo/whoweare/history

And it’s Nspcc - nothing royal at all!

Took me all of 2 mins googling to check that & find links.

Get your facts straight before you embarrass yourself.

“You don’t have a clue what rich people give to charity, it’s not public record.” Also true

George Michael its gradually being revealed gave away millions, from donations and support to major charities to simply handing over huge cheques to people he met in passing he believed worthy.

There’s also the very many non famous very wealthy people who do similarly and who give of their time and expertise to charities they feel strongly about. I know a few inc a major lottery winner who loves this aspect of their win but keeps talk of it within her close circle.

“She can do nothing because shes unelected.” Nonsense! She may be LIMITED in what she can do but she’s not actually completely powerless. There are admittedly rarely used rules which allow the monarch to intervene in political matters if they consider it in the best interests of the country.

Plus I think you missed the point of my comment which was IF she’s completely useless/ineffectual politically then the “well would you rather have a president?” Argument is moot as we effectively then have de facto bloody president johnson!

Ahem...

“Nobody in the UK "pays" for the royal family.”

“The profits of the Crown Estate are public money” contradicting yourself there.

My understanding is they don’t own crown estates we loan them to them so that IS our money yes?

So the contract handing over the profits of the Crown Estate need to be renewed upon the accession of each monarch. If Charles decides to not do this (won't happen, but just what ifs), he can because it goes back to his ownership.

Presumably if he decided not to hand the money over, he’d also be made responsible for covering the costs of running the county, which is what the Crown Estates were originally set up to fund.

No Laurie - the public also does not own the Crown Estate.

They is no place for a 'royal' family in today's society. It's just crazy that an unelected family have such a role in the 21st century.

I'm not a fan of the current royal family. The way they flaunt their wealth is awful. They have no idea how badly they come across.
They are spoilt and come across as not too bright. The Queen is probably the most sensible of the lot.

TBH even if they were amazing people I still wouldn't support having a royal family.

We live in a democracy - so let's have all our countries being fairly elected.

Didn't use her power to intervene in the mess that is Brexit did she.

I never said they did.

It is owned by a legal entity known as ‘The Crown’. Not an individual or set of individuals.

Their original purpose was to fund the running of the state (parliament, defence, institutions, diplomacy and so forth).

George III cut a deal whereby he handed them over to parliament, for them to cover that stuff, while getting the sovereign grant to fund the running of the monarchy.

It’s not Windsor family money either.

Of course she's completely powerless! The red box and weekly meetings with the PM are a charade. She cannot intervene in political matters. If she does, that's the end of the monarchy because you cannot have an unelected body overruling an elected one in a democracy. It is convention that he doesn't use her powers but convention is part of the unwritten constitution. How cabbage ( or Charles or William) decide what is in the best interests of the country?

Went right off the Queen when I heard she barked at Miriam Margolyes to “be quiet!” last week! How bloody rude and entitled.

No we don't because we have a Parliamentary rather than a presidential system. They are two different systems of government. If we had a ceremonial president, we would still have a Parliamentary system where the government is the executive and Parliament is the legislature. Do you really think we live in a country where someone who has been born into immense privelege, has not been chosen by anyone can, maybe 5 minutes after their parent has died can decide political matters? Where they can overthrow the government and Parliament because they think it's for the good of the country? Last time that happened the king ended up with his head on a plate and that was 400 years ago! Would you happily put up with that situation now?

Let there be an end to this when the Queen finally passes. It’s the worst kind of anachronism.

Love that someone is cross that they think the Queen is entitled! Legend has it that the Queen Mum said to her in the heat of a row “who do you think you are?” and the response came wearily back; “The Queen, Mummy, the Queen.”

Have people never done a petition on gov. uk?
If a petition is raised to abolish the monarchy it has to be debated in parliament if it reaches a certain number.
seems odd that's never happened

I am a republican but at this moment in time I fear for what the Great British Public would vote to put in place of the Monarchy as they seem to have made a right pig sty voting since 2015. The devil you know and all...though once that fuckwit Charles gets to the throne I might say different

She comes across as very entitled in that story. She’s not fucking God. Telling someone to be quiet like that is staggeringly rude.

I lived in London for ten years (lived in Chelsea. Worked in Kensington, sometimes marble arch) I never, ever saw the royal family. I never saw Buckingham Palace either. Diana and the queen mother died during my time there. I did meet Camilla but only realised when someone else told me afterwards.

I also agree that People are coming to see the buildings and the amazing history of the UK and London and not the useless lumps of royal lard that are so out of touch with the populace.

I wish they would go, after the Queen has died. Or at least massively downsized.

She's also head of state in Aus and Canada and prob a few other countries. I doubt we can decide to remove her from those positions.

The Queen has only just started to pay income tax. They have had decades where they didn’t pay income tax. They still dont pay other taxes. The wealth built up by not paying tax for decades is huge! No one else has had that advantage. Harry and Meghan benefit from this.

Mostly people in AU don't want to remove Liz; they want to wait till she's died before going full Republic.
