What happens when the queen dies?

I know that. Harley's becomes king etc but what happens to the others? Will they be left money/homes/? Do they inherit anything? Is the queen allowed to leave them royal 'stuff'?

Might be a bit random but I just thought of it Grin

The majority of the Queen's possessions will be left to Prince Charles for tax reasons. Sovereign to Sovereign transfers don't create any inheritance taxes. She may do as her mother did and create trust funds for some of her grandchildren (she won't do one for William as he won't need it. She may even skip Harry for the same reason). She'll probably leave trinkets for her godchildren as well, but most things will go to Charles.

The whole country won't grind to a halt for 12 days. There will be a mourning period, but she'll be lying in state for some of that so buses/tubes etc will have to run to allow people to go to Westminster Hall (or wherever she is) to pass her. If tubes and buses are running so people can queue to pass the queen you can be sure that Tesco and the likes will be open and staff working. It's very different from when George VI died.

Charles will be King straight away, but William won't be Prince of Wales straight away. He'll be the Duke of Cornwall and Cambridge though as he'll inherit that from his father when Charles becomes King. To be POW he'll have to be invested and that won't happen until after the Coronation.

Charles will become George VII, William will become Prince of Wales. We will have at least one extra bank holiday, probably more.

William doesn't automatically become PoW, Charles wasn't PoW until he was about 20.

I'm not sure he will change his name, his GF and mother were not named with the thought of them being king, Charles was.

You have to remember how much of the world is still part of the Commonwealth, though.

About 50 countries as I recall. India, several populous African nations, Canada, Australia and the rest really just tiny island nations and the like. I'm not sure we'll all be beating our breasts in angst if the Queen dies. I'm sure she adds value to England; as a previous poster said tourism may suffer as Charles isn't really held in very high regard elsewhere; but as for a loss to countries like Australia and Canada I'm sure we'll manage.

OMG the funeral will be a security nightmare.

Probably the biggest gathering of heads of state ever!!!!

lalalalyra · 14/01/2017 06:22

I thought of this because of Lord Snowdon dying and what would happen to his two children being grandchildren of a King. Would they have money that passed down from king George to Princess Margaret?

They can't have had that much passed down because they had to sell some of their mother's possessions to may the inheritance tax bill when she died.

scaredoffallout · 14/01/2017 06:43

Why would the funeral be the biggest gathering of heads of state ever?

Genuine question.

Pluto30 · 14/01/2017 07:02

but she isn't Mandela or Gandhi

Possibly more controversy over both of these people than there is over the Queen...

I've learned so much from this thread. Reminds me why I'm a member of Mumsnet. One of the most interesting threads I've read for a long time!

BlueberryGateaux · 14/01/2017 07:28

This thread is very interesting, I'm no royalist so I've learnt lots from this thread. The funeral will be a nightmare and cost a fortune! No doubt it will be us (ultimately) paying the price. Viva the revolution I say and get rid of the lot of them!

An act of parliament determines the terms of an abdication.. But the Instrument of Abdication came first, the Act of Parliament was passed to "give effect to His Majesty's declaration of abdication"

MistressMaisie · 14/01/2017 08:02

I imagine it will be the biggest gathering of the heads of state as who wouldn't come.
There will be American (maybe not trump who knows) Chinese I would think, Lots from the Gulf area, India, Australia, Canada, maybe not from S America. All the European, surely Scandinavian royals, Danish royals. African - commonwealth, possibly former commonwealth.

We have a bigger terrorist threat than S Africa, and India at the time of Ghandi.

RustyBear · 14/01/2017 08:14

See the Yes Prime Minister episode 'A Diplomatic Incident' for what really happens at a State funeral...

Georgiesgirl · 14/01/2017 08:21

As a big Smiths fan, I'm looking forward to hearing a lot of this

Wasn't Wallis essentially the same as Harry's new girlfriend? Previously divorced, American etc...

Was the issue with Edward that he was the direct heir, or is it just a change of the times that no one seems to care about Megan's situation like they cared about Wallis'?

The monarch is the head of the Church of England as well as Head of State. At the time of the abdication the Church of England did not recognise divorce or marry divorcees which complicates matters. As the C of E has married most divorcees since 2002 that is not really an issue anymore. Plus Wallis was divorced twice and had committed adultery as her relationship with Edward VIII began whilst she was still very much married to Ernest Simpson and she also had a very murky past. Plus nobody in the royal family had divorced for a very long time (although George IV tried unsuccessfully).

The royal family has learned from it's mistakes. Margaret wasn't allowed to marry Group Captain Townsend because he was divorced (despite her being in exactly Harry's position) and Charles not Camilla because of her past (although he wouldn't have married her anyway, he felt it was too early too marry and she was in love with Andrew Parker-Bowles), Andrew had to dump Koo Stark because she'd been in a soft porn. All ended up with marriages which failed anyway and their original choices may have been less damaging.

Having said that I would be stunned if Harry actually married Megan Markle, at least while the Queen is alive.

Pluto30 · 14/01/2017 08:40

Thanks for the explanation Bill Smile

I, too, would be surprised if Harry and Megan marry, but, again, stranger things have happened!

Because leaders from all over the world will attend the funeral to pay their respects. The Queen will have met most of them during her extremely long reign and it's a diplomatic thing - to not attend the funeral would be a slight on the country, not just the Queen.

BertrandRussell · 14/01/2017 08:55

Lots of mumsnetters will be "devestated" or "crying all day" and there will be calls for any thread not devoted to her hats, corgies and life of brutal self sacrifice and devoted hard labour to be "pulled"

MrsWhiteWash · 14/01/2017 09:08

I recently wondered origin of phase "Queen's English" - wondered if it went back to Elizabeth 1 or another queen I was taken back to read it will become "King's English" - when we have a king it just seems wrong.

diddl · 14/01/2017 09:13

"Margaret wasn't allowed to marry Group Captain Townsend because he was divorced"

I think that they could have married couldn't they, but Margaret chose to retain her position within the Royal family?

ZaZathecat · 14/01/2017 09:26

Facebook will crash as millions try to be first to break the news and showcase their grief.

BlueberryGateaux · 14/01/2017 09:30

Bertrand I agree, not me though Grin

BillSykesDog · 14/01/2017 09:36

Yes Diddl, that's right. I could have worded it better!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 14/01/2017 09:59

Camilla is a divorcee (and technically so is Charles) - the marriage was controversial, but it took place

It may have taken place, but let's not forget that the PoW has made sure that the many questions over its legality will never be answered in his lifetime: www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/law-and-order/7578557/Prince-of-Wales-will-take-wedding-secret-to-his-grave.html

Some might think that, if the "legal advice" had been favourable to what he wanted to do, Charles would have been only too glad for it to be made public. They might even wonder if, when the queen dies, some group will start another challenge around his eligibility to be king ...

Destinysdaughter · 14/01/2017 10:02

Donald Trump will tweet about it...
