The royal family

Oh dear, why do they have to be so old-fashioned?

Looking at the pictures of Princess Charlotte's Christening - the replica christening gown I have no problem with, but using the same pram that the Queen used for Charles and Anne, and William dressed up the same as his grandfather would have been at his sister's Christening? Why?

Ah, I see anyone, I agree, why can't he?! Blush

DeidreChambersWhatACoincidence · 05/07/2015 19:59

I like the way they dress George. His clothes might be a bit old fashioned but in a nice way. It'll only be for a short time.

When my ds was small, occasionally I'd manage to find him a nice jumper like the ones G wears and I'd be really pleased because things like that are few and far between. So many little boys clothes now are just depressing.

CocktailQueen · 05/07/2015 20:00

Charlotte looked v comfortable in the pram, though I agree it is hideous and not to my taste. Who knows why she was crying? Babies do!

Kate looked beautiful and stylish and happy. I see that Charlotte isn't a refluxy baby. Wearing all that cream...

George looked cute but it's odd to replicate his father's outfit so closely.

MythicalKings · 05/07/2015 20:01

I like the way they dress the children. Traditional is nice. I can't understand why people take exception to it.

They look much nicer than the mini adults I see around in clothes that may well look ridiculous in years to come.

LaVolcan · 05/07/2015 20:02

Little boys always wore shorts in the 1930s/40s/50s even in the depth of winter. They went into 'longs' around the time of puberty.

The pram looked comfortable.

They all looked smartly dressed and happy, apart from The Princess.

Preminstreltension · 05/07/2015 20:06

I think they all look lovely. And Confused at the christening gown looking grubby Grin. It's stunning not grubby.

I love to see little boys dressed like this - much better than a Daddy's Little Monster t shirt.

Not a royalist at all but I like all the outfits and the ancient pram.

EmpressKnowsWhereHerTowelIs · 05/07/2015 20:08

It would make a lot of sense if George is dressed like that in public to make it easier for him to go incognito the rest of the time, though.

43cupsoftea · 05/07/2015 20:09

I thought they looked happy too. Loved the fact that George was in red but I wouldn't have chosen that shirt.

EdithWeston · 05/07/2015 20:11

The pram is what everyone had in the 1950s!

Carriage built, to last.

The Royal a Family is always thrifty.

And Prince's George's outfit is pretty much what Prince William was wearing at that age, if you look at the pix in this BBC article

Sensible to out a small boy in shorts during a hot July (or was it not hot in Norfolk?)

Hulababy · 05/07/2015 20:21

I love that kind of pram. Totally impractical for where I am and my lifestyle, but a beautiful timeless pram. I doubt Silver Cross prams are uncomfortable - they will have a decent mattress ime.

I quite like the retro clothes they have for George for his royal appearances. They need to have clothes that look a certain traditional way, because of their roles. I imagine day t day he wears less formal attire. But regardless, his outfits always look soft and comfortable.

Its a formal occasion. Formal attire is the norm!

StillFrankie · 05/07/2015 20:58

I do love the cambridges but this is just wierd - the same outfits as William at that age - just why?! and the big show of walking out with the old style pram - use a modern buggy and modern clothes ffs!

senua · 05/07/2015 21:11

Retro / traditional clothes make sense: there is nothing more dated than last year's fashion.
Considering that people will be looking at pictures of today (or any other royal occasion) for years to come, it is best to have never-in-fashion-so-never-out-of-fashion clothes.

CultureSucksDownWords · 05/07/2015 21:15

Lots of people buy modern versions of those coach work prams, I don't think using a vintage family one is odd at all. Plus it looks beautiful, imo obviously.

Wearing the same outfits as his dad, well why is it weird exactly? Why not? He looks cute, and as previous people have said, it's a non-fashion look so won't date. I cannot understand why people find it so strange.

FujimotosElixir · 05/07/2015 21:15

funnily enough what prince george was wearing is traditional Spanish wear, its taken off in a big way recently.

outtolunchagain · 05/07/2015 21:22

What exactly would "modern clothes" be for such an occasion , surely for a christening most toddlers would wear smart shorts and shirt , mine certainly did .I loved the opportunity to dress them up in shirts with piped collars .I have to say that what Prince George wears is pretty typical of what you would see in middle class circles around here for weddings christenings etc

The thing is it's like a uniform isn't it , when he is out public ally he will be photographed , those photos will be produced his whole life. I am sure he has plenty of rough and tumble type clothes for every day wear .

SurlyCue · 05/07/2015 21:23

and the big show of walking out with the old style pram - use a modern buggy and modern clothes ffs!

Confused WHY? Why do they need to use a modern pram? Who does it effect? Which brand do you approve of just so they know theyre doing it right? And does it have to be brand new out of the box or could they have used George's pram? But really, WHY? I dont get your annoyance at this.

SurlyCue · 05/07/2015 21:25

Also was it really a big show or did they just ya know, walk out normally with their pram?

outtolunchagain · 05/07/2015 21:28

Apparently the pram was used for the Queen when she was a baby , I think that's a lovely family touch , like using a family shawl or christening bangle , it's a sign of continuity and respect . Surely that's common in lots of families .

tribpot · 05/07/2015 21:28

I wonder why no-one has mentioned yet that the Archbishop was wearing his bloody old robes again (although they do seem to have some rather funky-looking embroidery on). What an opportunity lost to update ecclesiastical dress to include the Beckham sarong.

BackforGood · 05/07/2015 21:29

But surely a nice pair of shorts and a normal shirt would be better than the girly blouse they've put him in.
They looked old fashioned back when William was dressed in them. Ridiculous now.
The Christening gown is different - family heirloom and all that, but he's supposed to be a little boy at his sister's Christening.

JillBYeats · 05/07/2015 21:30

Surely that is the appeal (FWIW I am not British and appreciate the royal family purely as a tourist attraction). Isn't it all about harking back to a time when men were men and women the unrecognized backbone of the nation? Their appeal will die out - but in the meantime their existence is surely a massive contributor to the UK coffers.

senua · 05/07/2015 21:31

Actually, I'm quite pleased to see the Cambridges making an effort. In the early days, they did seem to be trying to be Ordinary People. Which they patently aren't. If the royals aren't going to behave as royals then they have no purpose; it's in the job description to wear stuffy clothes and go to big occasions.
The tourist trade would dry up pretty quickly if they wandered around wearing the same and doing the same as the rest of us.

senua · 05/07/2015 21:32

I'm with ya, Jill

LittleBearPad · 05/07/2015 21:35

The almost identical outfit to one William wore is very odd.

Fine be traditional, shorts made sense etc. but why mimic Wiilliam as a toddler so closely. It's bizarre. George is his own little person, stop making him his father in miniature.
