The royal family

Oh dear, why do they have to be so old-fashioned?

Looking at the pictures of Princess Charlotte's Christening - the replica christening gown I have no problem with, but using the same pram that the Queen used for Charles and Anne, and William dressed up the same as his grandfather would have been at his sister's Christening? Why?

Ha ha! It was a bit tongue in cheek usual but I am definite he won't be dressed in starchy gear on a normal day! Everyone has dressed their children smartly for a special occasion, how many people's DD's have been a bridesmaid or DS's have been dressed in a tiny suit for an occasion, it's cute, they look great! I don't understand the hoohar!

TinyManticore · 05/07/2015 19:24

I don't think much of the way they keep putting Prince George in replicas of prince William's childhood outfits. They weren't that nice to begin with and it feels really forced, like it's only being done so the papers can compare the photos.. Presumably his paternity isn't in doubt, why do they need to dress him the same to invite comparisons?

LaVolcan · 05/07/2015 19:24

I have explained that I referred to Charles, and in the next breathe his i.e. Charles' sister. But yes, I should have been more clear - a whole Miss Marple book turned on such a confusion once.

Why do you feel the need to make such comments OP ? I'm sure you'd be furious if someone made similar comments about your taste or choice of clothes for yourself on your fb page or ibehind your back to friends. None of your business, how is it hurting you ?

Theoldshmoo · 05/07/2015 19:25

Its all a bit strange, Diana spent most of her time trying to drag the RF into the 21st Century showing how dysfunctional and screwed up they all are and William seems to be intent on dragging them back into the 1940s and making them look even more oddConfused

Whether they like it or not the world has moved on from the those good old days of the 40s/50s when a majority of the population accepted the word of the PR machines and limited media so them trying to erase the last 30 years is a bit laughable if thats what they are trying to do.

The lookalike outfits just shows how odd they are.

SurlyCue · 05/07/2015 19:25

Vintage fashion, particularly 40's and 50's fashion are quite popular now in some circles. Lot of high street brands are now designing with a vintage slant. I really dont see a problem.

Northernlurker · 05/07/2015 19:27

I doubt Kate's grandmother got married in an Alexander McQueen top notch construction - because that's what the dress actually was.

I loved the pram. It's a perfectly sensible choice for that sort of journey. Should be comfortable and actually allowed people to see the baby. In her own pram you wouldn't have seen a thing. I was very impressed Kate could push it up a steep slope in high heels too Grin

If you care to take a look at the Swedish Royal family at Princess Leonore's christening you will see Princess Victoria channelling her mother and Princess Estelle wearing a dress which belonged to her mum, Princess Victoria. It's a traditional, classic look thing. I like it. And actually my dds have worn dresses which belonged to me.

SurlyCue · 05/07/2015 19:27

No, i mean when you said "William dressed up the same as his grandfather" you meant george dressed up the same as his grandfather. William was wearing a suit.

ohhello · 05/07/2015 19:28

I like it. Their whole existence is based on tradition really. Love baby George's long socks and traditional toddler clothes.

usualsuspect333 · 05/07/2015 19:28

The Royal family are our business though. We pay for them.

LaVolcan · 05/07/2015 19:29

Sorry, yes, I did mean George there!

Bellebella · 05/07/2015 19:30

I agree, I do think the royals would be more popular if they actually got with the times. I mean Prince George is a beautiful toddler but does he really need to wear shorts and long socks everywhere?

Northernlurker · 05/07/2015 19:30

Also the nanny uniform - the nanny is never seen in it usually but this is a very particular occasion when she is attending an event in her capacity as a professional employed by the family so out comes the uniform. She's a Norland Nanny, the uniform is their 'thing'. Bet the Queen LOVED it Grin

senua · 05/07/2015 19:37

The vintage pram is probably quite clever. Imagine the hoo-haa if they'd chosen a quinny-zapp over a bugaboo (are those the right terms? we didn't have designer prams in my day).
Using granny's old thing totally bypasses product placement problems.

AnyoneForTennis · 05/07/2015 19:38

It's july!! Why can't the poor kid wear shorts??

AnyoneForTennis · 05/07/2015 19:38

Bugaboo's and zaps are common tho....and hideous

CultureSucksDownWords · 05/07/2015 19:40

I'm no royalist, quite the opposite, but I can't see how anyone could look at the pictures of the christening and think anything churlish about them! Who cares what they wear? It's their choice, for their reasons. They all look fine to me. Reusing a family pram/outfit etc is a typical thing surely? The whole idea of a monarchy is old fashioned and traditional, how can anyone whinge when they are traditional!

I also wonder if the outfits for George being similar to his father's as a baby is something to do with involving Lady Diana in the event, somehow, as a nod to her.

4EverScottish · 05/07/2015 19:41

It seems rather pointless using the pram, especially as it can't be the most comfortable of prams - no wonder she was crying! I expect it is because they don't want to be seen to favouring a particular manufacturer.

Chewbecca · 05/07/2015 19:44

I see silver cross prams being used round here occasionally, they look great, very comfortable and the suspension helps the ride.

The nanny was wearing the standard norland nanny uniform.

And George WAS in shorts!

captainproton · 05/07/2015 19:45

Well my father and his sister have the same small age gap my children have. There is an adorable family photo of my father and aunt in a family portrait. Dad a bonnie thing in s shirt and tank top, big sister in s pretty dress and white ribbons. Both children have similar features to their relatives. At a recent family event I had my children in similar outfits. Everyone in my family loved it, we recreated the photo and now the pictures hang beside each other on dad's wall. My nephew has dad's little wooden chair and a few other bits. I think that it's nice to look back and honour our elderly relatives by dressing small children in similar outfits and sharing special items. Like bringing the generations together. I also think that when you lose a parent before their grandchildren are born these things matter more. Maybe Diana really loved William's outfit and therefore William was honouring his mum by putting George in similar. I think it shows how important family is to William and kate.

AnyoneForTennis · 05/07/2015 19:47

chew I know he was..... I was saying it to the sneery comments about what he was wearing

SurlyCue · 05/07/2015 19:48

It seems rather pointless using the pram, especially as it can't be the most comfortable of prams - no wonder she was crying!

Pointless? Confused why? And do you really think they wont have refurbed the inside as necessary to make it cushiony soft?

purplemeggie · 05/07/2015 19:51

We bought a pram like that (don't s'pose theirs was £36 on eBay though...) - because DS was (gasp) a tummy sleeper and when he grew out of his carry cot he was happier in that than in a buggy. I think they're probably more comfortable than a modern pram: they have amazing suspension and a proper cot mattress.

BackforGood · 05/07/2015 19:53

I'm with you, op.
When he (George) was brought to the hospital, I thought the same then - why are they dressing him like it was 1952 ? Confused
William and Kate seem so normal in so many ways, I just don't get why they dress him like that whenever we (the public) get to see him.

Rivercam · 05/07/2015 19:53

I love the tradition of using a family heirloom, ie. The pram.
