"Ooh twinges....could this be it?"

I wish. Think I must be a closet royalist as I am rathrr excited about this impending birth. Anyone want to keep watch with me?

Very different circumstances. That was to ensure, as the line was changing, that any children he had later on wouldn't have a claim to the throne and cause trouble later. If he had had kids and not abdicated on their behalf as well then there could well have been a constitutional crisis further along.

There would be nothing to stop the Queen from abdicating in favour of Charles now, in fact, that would pretty much be the only way she would be able to abdicate.

ZingWidge · 17/07/2013 12:52

missMarple

exactly!
when I was almost due with DS5 I thought my waters broke and had to get checked out at the hospital.
but there was fucking Nick Clegg visiting, so there was a hold up!

I wanted to scream! there I was, in need of urgent assistance, worrying about outcome, stressef and feeling ill etc and yet there was this cheerful mood and casual atmosphere. I hated it.
(he ended up chatting to the woman a curtain away about her twins, laughing and all why I was anxiously waiting for results. I wished he didn't)

Chubfuddler · 17/07/2013 12:53

Oh I know all that, but (and here I am only repeating what is understood to be the case, not what I know) there is also the fact that the abdication crisis caused her own father untold stress and would it be unthinkable for her. A regency would do the job perfectly well if she really felt unable to continue.

Whats with the collection.of.rockson the table? Does she actuallylike and inspect rocks, or does she insist that her surfaces are full of stuff and the courtiers had run out of ideas? "Shit, shove a load of.pebbles on to fill the gap!'

OP posts:
ZingWidge · 17/07/2013 14:07

oh no, not the pebbles and twiggly shit again!

Jojobump1986 · 17/07/2013 14:51

Surely the reason it caused so much strife for her father was because he never really expected to be king. Charles has been being prepared for it his whole life so it wouldn't be such a shock. I'd quite like her to abdicate tbh. I prefer her to Charles but I rather like the thought of her having a retirement & pottering around like the rest of the OAPs! I'd then like Charles to abdicate too & we can skip straight to the soon-to-be new parents! Perhaps not while they're adjusting to parenthood though!

KittenofDoom · 17/07/2013 16:13

It would be much nicer if they retired and abdicated like the Dutch monarchs do. There's no reason why The Queen couldn't do it, they would just issue Letters Patent or whatever it is they do when they want to change the rules. Such a shame that the Edward VIII business left such a scar that she feels she has to stay in the job till she dies.

DuelingFanjo · 17/07/2013 16:33

your husband is a policeman protecting the royal family and he's telling you where William is and that Katherine is not in Labour yet?

or did I get the wrong end of the stick?

Hasn't she said she will never abdicate? She believes it is a job for life and so on.

I wouldn't think that Edward VIII would be the template for this - as Ponders said, the situation was quite different and there was real concern that he or one of his immediate family (wife/kids) would be used as pawns by Germany or another hostile power in the future. The best equivalent now would be the European monarchs and there have been two (or more?) abdications recently in favour of their known heirs by elderly monarchs. I kind of wish the Queen would consider it for her own sake. She's had her diamond jubilee now which is a great landmark.

BTW, for anyone who is interested in the Edward stuff and likes a comic novel, Laurie Graham's Gone With The Windsors is a brilliant send-up of the whole abdication crisis (yes, really). She is a great writer.

KittenofDoom · 17/07/2013 22:12

I'm thinking of having a flutter on the baby name, and was tempted by Albert at 50/1. "Prince Albert" might be a bit dodgy these days though, would you think? Wink

JugglingFromHereToThere · 17/07/2013 22:24

Well I'm wondering if the Queen was dropping a hint today - she said she hopes baby arrives soon so she can start her holiday - could this mean Kate is in labour ? Anyone else betting on a baby by morning ?!

All the best to you Kate however things are going ... my two were 10 and 8 days late respectively ... but I was quite happy to wait really ... but must be a bit hot ATM with this weather Flowers

Ponders · 17/07/2013 22:37

nope, I think the Queen just means she hopes the baby comes soon so she can go on holiday!

It's Balmoral in the summer, isn't it - it's a long way to have to travel back for cooing purposes Grin

JugglingFromHereToThere · 17/07/2013 22:46

I don't know ... but I may have got a bit carried away since seeing the new issue of the Radio Times in the Co-op this evening - "Happy Birthday !" it says ?! Confused

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 17/07/2013 22:51

Duelling I don't think you have the wrong end of the stick.

ihate that is pretty horrid gossip. I cannot believe you are so naive as to post it on here - if it was got wind of in the wrong places they could identify you in a heartbeat and your DH would lose his job. Is it really worth it to feel important on an MN thread? If I were you I would ask for those posts to be deleted asap.

Zynding · 17/07/2013 22:53

I read it the way you did Ponders. She's hoping that this birth shenanigans won't interfere with the main play. Her holiday :-p

MrsHerculePoirot · 17/07/2013 22:55

I don't think the queen will abdicate for a while yet - Queen Victoria did 63 years and 7 months and I think she'll want to beat that now!!!

ZingWidge · 17/07/2013 23:23

perhaps she is going for a Guinness record MrsPoirot

or maybe she's just happy as she is. you know, alive and all!Grin

MortifiedAdams · 17/07/2013 23:31

Maybe she knows Wills will.make a better king than Charles and is hoping to.outlive her son Wink

KittenofDoom · 18/07/2013 00:00

Hoping to outlive her son? What a horrible thing to say.

MortifiedAdams · 18/07/2013 00:03

Lighten up kitten it was meant to be a joke. Clearly.

OP posts:
ZingWidge · 18/07/2013 00:16
