What will William & Kate's titles be...?

This will only be announced on friday morning.

I think they will just make her a princess in her own right. (I know it's not the norm, but i think the royal family can make up any rules they like re: titles.) They do it in scandivia, so i think we will have a Princess Catherine.

Apparently Will & Kate don't want clunky old duke & duchess titles as it makes them sound too old. also they have gone to great lengths to make sure kate is constantly referred to as Catherine...

Her official title won't be Princess Catherine she will be Princess William of Wales although I am sure she will be known as Princess Catherine. The Queen may well give William a Dukedom for a wedding present and as you say it will be announced on Friday morning.

HazeltheMcWitch · 27/04/2011 23:05

Duke and Duchess of Cambridge I think (ok, heard on tv today it was a possible one one by dint of a royal visit)

LauraNorder · 27/04/2011 23:06

I heard that too Hazel

meditrina · 27/04/2011 23:08

They'll announce it on the morning of the wedding (I think that's what they did for the Duke of York and the Earl of Wessex).

If they were going to be strict about it, then she's become Princess William of Wales (like Princess Michael of Kent), but I don't think that would be an acceptable title nowadays. The Queen can do what she likes though (a perk of being Queen!) so perhaps it might be Princess Catherine (which will be instantly tabloided into Princess Kate). But my money would be on another Royal dukedom - often an elder son would take on a lesser title of the father, but as Camilla uses Cornwall, that stuffs up that possibility (unless Charles has any other secondary titles - anyone know?), so perhaps one of the ones in abeyance - perhaps Clarence (keep away from the malmsey!)

Saltire · 27/04/2011 23:10

Charles is Duke of Rothesay too, although that a prince of Wales title, which Wullie will inherit when he becomes Prince of Wales

LauraNorder · 27/04/2011 23:13

Didn't know this...

"Diana Princess of Wales was never "Princess Diana," no matter what the press called her. At the time of her marriage, she became HRH The Princess of Wales; after her divorce, she was Diana, Princess of Wales. The title "Princess" with a woman's given name is reserved for those who are so titled from birth - the daughters of the Sovereign or of a Prince."

meditrina · 27/04/2011 23:16

I've just been googling, and found Rothesay! The "vacant" past Royal Dukedoms are Albany, Albemarle, Bedford, Cambridge, Clarence, Connaught, Cumberland, Hereford, Kendal, Ross, Sussex and Windsor.

meditrina · 27/04/2011 23:17

LauraNorder: yes, twas ever thus, but HMQ could decree otherwise if she were so minded. But it would be an unusual step.

foxinthewoods · 27/04/2011 23:24

I was wondering whether he works...very silly of me not to know!

meditrina · 28/04/2011 00:08

Yes, he really is working as a search and rescue helicopter pilot.

Perhaps they could break completely with tradition and become Flt Lt and Mrs Wales for the remaining duration if hs active service?

princewilliam · 28/04/2011 00:14

Well I do know but I'm not telling [cwink]

LauraNorder · 28/04/2011 08:24

Think that's unlikely meditrina but anything is possible!

diddl · 28/04/2011 09:55

"Perhaps they could break completely with tradition and become Flt Lt and Mrs Wales for the remaining duration if hs active service?"

Yes, if Charles lives as long as his mum, William could work until retirement age & then take up official duties.

megapixels · 28/04/2011 11:18

But there is a Duke and Duchess of Bedford isn't there meditrina? The Woburn Abbey people?

breatheslowly · 28/04/2011 11:22

I imagine that they would be loathe to call her Princess in her own right just in case it didn't work out and they wanted to take it back or do a Diana type thing with her title.

throckenholt · 28/04/2011 11:22

maybe she will keep her maiden name Grin.

meditrina · 28/04/2011 11:23

So there is - don't know how that crept in!

frakyouveryverymuch · 28/04/2011 11:27

It won't be Windsor - or if it is I'd be enormously surprised.

They may go for an Earldom, although Countess Catherine is a bit bleh. But Marchioness Catherine would be even worse!

They won't make her a Princess - it would cause all sorts of issues relating to precedence, especially internationally.

drivingmisscrazy · 28/04/2011 11:36

blimey, I can't believe that you all know this stuff [cgrin] - it's an education

OrangeBernard · 28/04/2011 11:42

I think Windsor will be forever tainted.

breatheslowly · 28/04/2011 11:42

I think it may be time for a MN campaign for her to keep her maiden name.

PinotGrigiosKittens · 28/04/2011 12:02

I hope its the Dukedom as Sussex. Then their first official engagement as a married couple would be down here and I can go and squeeeeeeeeeeeee at them [csmile]

bronze · 28/04/2011 12:05

I wonder how much say she'll get

EightiesChick · 28/04/2011 12:17

I wish they would get on and sort the succession for girls thing out. Don't they have to have it all done before any child is born if a girl is going to be their heir? That really does need sorting - I am fine with keeping the monarchy but no reason why a boy should inherit ahead of a girl these days. Waving and smiling can be done perfectly well by either gender Smile

Insomnia11 · 28/04/2011 12:26

I thought it had already been stated that she will be Princess Catherine?
