The royal family

What will William & Kate's titles be...?

This will only be announced on friday morning.

I think they will just make her a princess in her own right. (I know it's not the norm, but i think the royal family can make up any rules they like re: titles.) They do it in scandivia, so i think we will have a Princess Catherine.

Apparently Will & Kate don't want clunky old duke & duchess titles as it makes them sound too old. also they have gone to great lengths to make sure kate is constantly referred to as Catherine...

I don't think they will pick Cumberland as title for then as it was the Duke of Cumberland who beat the Jacobites at Culloden, last battle fought on British soil, not too popular a name with some Scots Grin.

As for the royal succesion thing - well they introduced it in Sweden after their children had been born - daughter first, then son then daughter and the son was the Heir to the throne then they changed it when he was a child and he became third in line to throne, after his older sister

EightiesChick · 28/04/2011 12:42

saltire that's good to know.

Duke & Duchess of Albany sounds good. Any darker associations there?

ZillahWhoDrankTooMuchGin · 28/04/2011 12:43

Yes and we love our Queens in England - they've been our most popular monarchs really - so no reason to not have a girl....

My guess is it will be something Scottish as his dad is 'Wales' to keep the union happy....

I too think Windsor is unlikely as too much weight of history (in fact i think they might have made it up for him) - so no other history to it...

MayBankHoliday · 28/04/2011 12:47

I think she'll be the Duchess of Sussex. No idea why, it just sounds good!

CrosswordAddict · 28/04/2011 13:01

What about St Andrews? Could they make up a new dukedom of St Andrews? That would keep Scotland happy and has associations for them both.
Duke and Duchess of Cambridge sounds good - a bit academic too.
Don't think they will touch Windsor for historical reasons but it does have a "ring" to it William Duke of Windsor sounds good and alliterative too.
I am just starting to get excited about the whole thing - have just been out to buy food so the family can "graze" and hopefully I'll get peace to wallow Wink

bronze · 28/04/2011 13:08

Isn't there an Earl of st andrews already?

meditrina · 28/04/2011 13:11

There is an Earl of St Andrews, son of the Duke of Kent, but not in line to the throne as he married a Roman Catholic.

Alibabaandthe80nappies · 28/04/2011 13:21

I find that as this gets closer I'm actually getting quite excited, when I really didn't think I'd be that bothered.

Windsor v.unlikely I would think, Ross maybe because of having something Scottish? It's been vacant for 5 centuries, time for a revival?

bronze · 28/04/2011 13:22

Well there can be both Duke of ..say Buckingham. So why not Duke of St Andrews. It's obviously a respectable enough place

bronze · 28/04/2011 13:30

sorry both Duke and Earl

Saltire · 28/04/2011 13:37

Duke and Duchess of Fife would be good - would pelase St Andrews no end Grin

bronze · 28/04/2011 13:46

Fife sounds better actually what with their an Andrew as a close familt member.

MrsKwazii · 28/04/2011 13:50

There is a Duke of Bedford - currently the 15th - who's seat is at Woburn Abbey. I reckon they're going to be Duke and Duchess of Cambridge m'self.

HRHCaveMum · 28/04/2011 13:53

Hoping for Duke & Duchess of Cambridge too - we're only 10 miles from Cambridge.

Agree that Windsor will probably not be used for a very long time.

misshospitalcorners · 28/04/2011 14:39

The couple may not want any titles, but they will be head of the monachy one day, I don't think they have a choice really.
I think leaving them as known as Prince & Princess is a little old fashioned.
I agree the title 'Princess' is for those born of royal blood. It irked me no end when Diana was called Princess Diana; or worse - Princess Di. Her title was always Diana, Princess of Wales. But that's just me.

I don't think the name Winsdor will be touched. It is their surname, yes, but as a title, well the declaration of abdication in 1936 is not yet forgotten.
The Duke & Duchess of Cambridge? Hmm
TRH The Duke & Duchess of Fife has a lovely ring to it.

One more thing. Why so heavy with being called Catherine, when the name Kate has been good enough for her so far?
(secretly hoping that the name Catherine doesn't become a popular/common/overused girls name once more)

bananamom · 28/04/2011 14:56

Something Scottish I think.

meditrina · 28/04/2011 15:02

Scotland already has the Duke of Edinburgh, so I think it's a clear field.

Perhaps they'll want a new Welsh title for the Wales family. Anglesey?

frakyouveryverymuch · 28/04/2011 15:02

She apparently prefers being known as Catherine. I think it's to avoid a repeat of 'Di'.

QuoththeRaven · 28/04/2011 15:30

Catherine, i think, because of the long line of Queen Catherines in our history. Plus its her "proper" name.

ZillahWhoDrankTooMuchGin · 28/04/2011 15:42

Ah i have it Grin .... Anglesey link right?

HRH The Duke and Duchess of llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch

frakyouveryverymuch · 28/04/2011 16:03

Catherine hasn't been a particularly auspicious Queenly name.

Valois was widowed very young (and then had an affair with Owen Tudor), Aragon got divorced, Howard was beheaded, Parr married under duress instead of marrying who she really wanted to (although she later did and died in childbirth) and Braganza was universally hated for being Catholic and foreign then humiliated because she didn't have any living children whereas Charlie was off sowing wild oats and had a whole clutch of bastards.

jewelosopher · 28/04/2011 16:29

I seem to come into this a bit late, but really I thought the topic was "what will WillKat be called?" as in the crossing of the royal and commoner DNA - the offspring. I was thinking Wayne.

LawrieMarlow · 28/04/2011 16:36

I think it will be Cambridge

BoffinMum · 28/04/2011 17:39

I think they're going to have to pick a new town, so something like Duke and Duchess of Milton Keynes would be good, for example. [cgrin]

jewelosopher · 28/04/2011 17:43

Now that has a ring to it!
