Dry cat food recommendations - she's gone off Purina One

My newish rescue cat was used to eating Whiskas and Purina One when we got her. She's now progressed onto Untamed which she loves (3 x wet meals a day) and 1 dry meal. However the dry food she seems to have gone off. I am not sure if it's because she's been spoiled with the Untamed and now has superior tastes! She will eat a bit but then leave it, but continues to beg for food so definitely hungry.

I am going away for an overnight and wanted to set up an automatic feeder with dry for two meals, but not if she won't eat it!

If your cat likes Untamed or similar type food can you recommend a dry food please?

Sounds like she's playing you. Rescue cats can be surprisingly cunning. Mine tries it on whenever she can.
Your cat had Whiskers at the rescue centre and then one day something better came along. She's seeing if the same happens with the Purina One, (because after all, 3 meals a day of Untamed will not leave her starving!)
Nibbling a few pellets and then yowling for something different is classic devious cat behavour.
I have no doubt that she will eat if she is hungry. If you go away, she will eat the pellets if she is hungry. She's a rescue cat. She knows how not to starve. She will suffer no ill effects if she doesn't eat for the short time you are away.
Maybe in the future wean her towards 2 wet meals and 2 dry meals a day. This will be cheaper, better for her teeth, and mean she can be more used to just being left dried food when you are away.

Cats can usually be left with dry food down all day for grazing, I would recommend doing that and you’ll probably find that it gets eaten as and when.

And Royal Canin is the one mine preferred, we had concept for life for a while (mixed them in) but they were eating around the Concept so I just get Royal Canin now.

Ours are currently on Scumbles chicken & salmon for adults & seniors. First time of trying and they seem to like it well enough.

We ring the changes a bit and don't always give them the same, one of which is Purina One. They tend to get a bit bored with the same thing all the time, like yours has done.

Thank you! Do you leave the dry out in its own bowl and use a separate bowl for the wet meals? I will try to resume 2 x wet meals and 2 x dry as it does get expensive.
what time of the day do you feed yours? I’m thinking dry during working on hours and wet first thing and before bed.

I leave a bowl of dry upstairs and downstairs and just top up as needed, that stays out all day like the water bowl. Then I have little plates I got from Amazon (I’ll add a link shortly) that I put half a sachet each out for them 3 times a day (the smaller one actually usually only gets it once a day, she comes for it when we call her if she wants it - if she doesn’t she might pick at his leftovers later). But I have Maine coons so yours might not need the wet as often, maybe just twice (sorry I don’t really know).

How many tins of untamed are you using a day? My cat gets it for a treat, but only half a tin at a time. One tin a day is plenty for her in combination with 30g dry, we use Iams chicken, (she is a steady 4kg)
It maybe that she is getting more than enough from the wet food so isn't really interested in the dry stuff.

Ours gets a weighed allowance of Royal Canin biscuits spilt between breakfast/lunch/dinner/tiny portion over night in the timed feeder, plus a tin of Untamed split between breakfast and dinner. He’d rather eat only dry (preferably Go Cat) and this is the compromise! We had a miserable time with him in the summer when he had two big canine teeth out and was on a wet food diet for two weeks. He had to be evicted from next door, spotted wolfing their cats’ biscuits in the kitchen while their boy looked on in horror. Their girl eventually kicked up a fuss and the screeching from both brought our neighbour running.

We currently have MiL’s cat with us since July while she does renovations and he has Blink wet food and Hills dry. He prefers the wet food and the biscuits are “good for his teeth”. Our previous girl was an absolute gannet and would eat anything and everything, #cleanplateclub every time.

Have you tried adding a bit of dry to the wet to fill cat up more?

We use Purizon dry food from zooplus.

DancingFerret · 06/10/2026 23:53

Second vote for Purizon (available from Bitiba as well as Zooplus).

Jayinthetub · 07/10/2026 00:57

Another vote for Iams chicken biscuits. They seem a constant “go to” although both of ours prefer Whiskas kitten biscuits even though they’re definitely not kittens anymore!!

Wet food out first thing in the morning. Cat eats it and heads out of cat flap for morning patrol after people have gone to work and the roads are quiet. ( We live in a rural village )If we are going out, we lock the catflap leave two small portions of dried in the timed feeder. If we are at home she has a handful of dried at eleven- ISH and another at lunchtime when she always comes back in. She goes out again and comes in at 3- ish for a Lik - e- Lix. The cat flap is locked them until the next morning. She has her second wet meal at about 7.30. We don't mix in the Purina One because she won't eat them if they are soggy.
It might not seem we are feeding her as much as the manufacturers recommend, but she keeps a steady healthy weight and her teeth are clean.
My son fed his cats the recommended amount of a wet posh brand and his cats put on an unhealthy amount of weight. The vet recommended cutting down their wet food considerably and they look a lot fitter now.

Just read Bitiba is owned by Zooplus, not sure of any benefits of ordering from one or the other, do you?

IAMS chicken hairball here

There is often a difference in price for the same item between the two sites.
