Over-the-counter flea treatment recommendations for a 4kg cat

GingerCatLove · 18/08/2026 12:11

Can anyone recommend a flea treatment that I can buy without prescription for a 4KG cat?
i have just called the vet to get a prescription and as they have not seen the cat in over a year they won't prescribe without bringing him in ( it has been 1 year and 1 week btw). He hates the cat carrier and it takes him a few days to get over it.

Frontline Plus Amazon covers ticks, fleas, eggs and the proper vet strength. We recommend to customer who have more than one pet and can't always afford to also come in with every single pet

GingerCatLove · 18/08/2026 13:59

Thanks so much @JustMeSimply
Can I check if it is this one:

Sorry to check but honestly I just want the best for my cat.
If not and you wouldn't mind sending a link that would be great.
Thanks.

Advantage is supposed to be good
Is your cat not due annual boosters?

Whettlettuce · 18/08/2026 14:37

Advantage or johnsons. Don't use anything frontline it doesn't kill fleas or protect the places they lay on or near

GingerCatLove · 18/08/2026 15:00

He didn't have anything last year @dementedpixie. Just a check up and she said all good and prescribed him worm and flea as we were out. I got a year's supply and have just run out and missed the re-prescription window by a week.

So Frontline plus isn't any good? Advantage then I'll look for.

Thanks.

Were you not offered annual boosters?
Does your cat go outdoors?
Mine get annual boosters and a check up at the same time. I can then order flea/wormer treatments from the vet when required

StormGazing · 18/08/2026 15:44

We buy advantage now from Animed as vets was insanely expensive

murasaki · 18/08/2026 15:49

Advantage is better than Frontline. You can buy it from Amazon, have to enter the weight, sex and age of your cat. I do it for mine and it's good (and half the price of the same thing at the vet). You can also set up a monthly delivery incase you forget.

Vet nurse here don't use Johnsons, Bob Martins , Beapher.
Advantage or Capstar probably better than Frontline.
Does your vet offer a free consultation for flea and worm products /advice ? so much better to get a POMV product instead of faffing about with over the counter less efficient products.
The royal vet college instructs us that the pet must be seen within a 12 month period and an authorisation written in the notes by the vet allowing the owner to buy them direct from vet or buy a written prescription to then purchase from your own source within that 12 months.
Good idea to give a tapeworm tablet too.

Whats wrong with johnsons? It's the same ingredient as advantage, so what makes advantage better then ? Just out of curiosity

No she didn't suggest anything and he does go out though not very far and there are not many other cats around here.
I had intended to re-order but missed the deadline by 7 days.
Thanks everyone.

Advantage is the best non-prescription option IMO. You can get it cheaply from Amazon.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 18/08/2026 16:35

I get Advantage on subscription from Pets at Home. Not a single flea since we've used it, and I have two outdoor cats who mix with some rough sorts at the farm 😉

from many years experience if anything has a bad reaction , which thankfully isn't that often ,it tends to be the ones I mentioned.
Aside -pretty ineffectual, wish i had a pound for all the clients i have helped over the years who have used these products to no avail who then have to fork out yet more money for something that does work.
I don't actually know how they have got away with selling such crap over so many years.
Obviously cheaper than POMV products but there are ways to do it cheaper with POMV and any decent vets will advise how to go about it.

Thanks for the information, i will bear in mind. Ive used johnsons for 10 plus years and ive never once had any issues with reactions or being ineffective

Pinkgin00 · 18/08/2026 20:12

My vet said Advantage is the best for over the counter, however it didn't work for my cats. The only thing that keeps them away is a vets prescription one

Sunshineandrainbow · 18/08/2026 20:14

I get prescription flea treatment from atlantic pets without prescription. They arrive quickly, I get the tablets and crush into a lic a lix.

My vet said similar a while ago, wouldn’t prescribe as it was more than six months since he had seen her, which I found ridiculous, they are aware how difficult it is to get her in a carrier. I bought Advantage from Amazon, as PP suggested.

The law has changed - it’s not your vet being difficult.

GoldTie · 19/08/2026 07:25

@beaglescurleduplikebagels ah ok, good to know, thank you
