Do some cats just not like laps?

I got a cat from a rescue about 3 months ago and shes lovely. She’s outgoing, friendly, loves playing, loves being stroked, loves tummy tickles, rubs up against our legs, will let us pick her up etc but she will not sit on our laps.

Is this normal?

I thought all cats loved snuggling up on their owners laps?

She will sleep at the bottom of my bed but she won’t sleep near me at the top or come near me (at the top of the bed) for cuddles.

She came from a very neglectful background so I don’t know if this plays a part, but in every other way she is completely comfortable around us.

I was so looking forward to having a cat I could cuddle up to on the sofa or who would happily snuggle up in my lap ☹️

Had mine since a kitten and he's always sat on my lap and kneaded my stomach - I have permanent scratches to prove it! He lies beside the other family members but mine is the only lap for him.

2 rescues, both boys.

One lovely and adores a fuss but selective about whether he sits on a lap. It’s usually to try and convince me he’s starving!

Cat Two is made of velcro. He sleeps on me- on my feet is the most distance between us he can entertain, his preference is to cuddle into my neck…. When I come home from work he squeaks at me until I pick him up like a baby.

I’ve had cats my whole life and my understanding is that DCat1 is the norm, DCat2 is very very odd!

ToadRage · 20/05/2026 16:12

It really depends on the cat, three out of the five cats I have had in my life were lap cats, two weren't including my current cat, she loves cuddles and will walk across us in bed but rarely sits on either of us. She likes to be around us but prefers her own space. If we are in the lounge she will sit on the sofa across from us. In the study she has a pillow on top of the book shelf. She has her own double bed in her own room and she likes to be in our bed if we are not in it. She doesn't make biscuits either which i something i have never found in a cat and wonder if maybe this is due to be taken from Mum too early. We know little of her life before the rescue centre, but she was badly injured in an RTA when they found her. She may have been a stray, she have escaped her owner and got lost, who knows.

We’ve got two rescue cats. Neither are lap cats, though one has warmed to it a bit - after 12 years! The other one likes to be next to you, but not on you. Neither likes to be picked up though. One likes to sit right in front of your face if you are working on a laptop.

I have a friendly affectionate 10 year old cat that I've had since 9 weeks and she hasn't sat on my lap since she was maybe 4 months old 😆
Next to me in bed, on the back of the sofa, but she's not a lap cat.

"It's a trust issue"

It really isn't. Some cats just aren't bothered. If one of mine doesn't sit on my lap due to a lack of trust, how come he sometimes chooses to sleep wrapped round my head all night?

I stand corrected! My 2 separate cats I had one from 5 months and the other just moved in with me so I assumed it was trust as they’d maybe not liked laps with their previous owners. My 2 brother and sister cats who were lap cats I had them from young kittens.

DandelionClockSeeds · 20/05/2026 16:41

Mine is a rescue.
I reckon it took 18 months before she would sit on me (and im the only one sometimes blessed). BUT only in winter, and ideally with the 'right' blanket on my legs, and me sitting sideways on the sofa ie legs straight.

Plenty of time yet.

Lovecats173694 · 20/05/2026 16:44

My cat will sit between my legs on the sofa if there’s a blanket over them. She Wouldn’t dare without the blanket and never sits directly on my lap. She’s very affectionate though and loves to be near me. NEVER wants to be picked up though so I avoid that.

cats just have personalities like us and like different things.

my cat would never want a companion. She actively dislikes other cats coming in the garden but is really sweet with humans

Just be careful what you wish for...
All the cats we've ever had have been lap cats - very sweet but debilitating 😻.

One of mine often sits on the arm of my chair, thinking about sitting on my lap. Occasionally he'll put a paw on my leg.

But he doesn't want my lap, he wants me to get up so he can sit in the chair.😁

purpleme12 · 20/05/2026 19:29

😆

Gettingbysomehow · 20/05/2026 19:31

My black cat is not a lap cat at all but the tabby is velcro. I cant sit down without her wanting to be on me and cuddling.

Jaxhog · 20/05/2026 19:36

We've eight cats and only three were ever lap cats. Two of them used to fight over a lap and try to curl up there at the same time!. Another liked to curl up on a lap - well chest really, and particularly liked shoulders; this was during lockdown especially during Zoom calls! All of them have been affectionate in their own ways. Be patient.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 20/05/2026 19:41

I’ve had my rescue 4 years and she has never been a lapcat! She’s a sweetheart who follows me round like a dog but she likes her space and hates being picked up or held.

She’s an ex breeding queen so definitely came with issues🤪 I’d love another cat but she won’t tolerate any other cat in the garden so no hope of a second cat in her lifetime.

Deadringer · 20/05/2026 19:42

Ime most cats are far too dignified to sit on our laps. My cat is definitely not a lap cat, but weirdly, whenever I am home alone (which is rare in a household of 7) she insists on sitting on my lap.

FoundAUserNameDownTheSofa · 20/05/2026 19:43

Do you sit down a lot? I had a friend complaining her cats don’t sit on her lap and I pointed out she never got to sit down!

‘My’ cat sits on my lap, whenever he can. DH’s cat never sits on laps. I do sit down quite a lot… (to be fair so does DH, but he’s taught ‘his’ cat to be playful).

They’re from the same litter, stray kittens until about 8 weeks.

It’s our cats who decided who belonged to who by the way.

Nottopanic · 20/05/2026 19:46

My cat won’t sit on our laps. We’ve had her four years, from a rescue. She won’t even sit next to us but will sit happily on another chair nearby. She doesn’t like being left alone, though, and at night will come and sleep on our bed next to us.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 20/05/2026 19:54

I'm afraid that two of the cats in that picture are no longer with us.
The grey and the black, Sybil and Basil, are now 15 and are still lap (or shoulder) cats at every opportunity.
We now also have two black 'kittens' Karl and Lenny, 8 years old now. Photo of them the day they arrived - being lap kittens.

I find cats can't really sit on my lap because of the way I sit - I always sit with my knees spread apart and to keep them together is quite uncomfortable. So I don't worry if a cat can't do it, I know why! Mine is quite content to sit next to me or most of the time she sleeps on my bed or in the same room on the floor.

Dillydollydingdong · 20/05/2026 20:20

My cat is just the opposite and desperately tries to get on my lap whether I want him or not. He's big and heavy and digs his claws in. Pain in the bum!

My rescue kitten would sit near us but never on our laps. 18 years later, she is The Lap Queen - as long as said lap is covered in heated blankie or duvet. Pic for cat tax.

I did a double take on your pic. I have that duvet cover and your cat looks like my Tink! 🥰

OP i think the fact yours sleeps with you is a good sign. Try a blanket or cushion.

Not the thread topic, but about ten years ago Instagram suggested a post which had a pure white cat lying on a white duvet patterned with pineapples. I thought it was my post/our cat/our bed for a second. I ended up messaging the poster and we became “friends”. Our white girl was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2024 and pts aged ten, and her white boy was pts with the same aged 11 at the end of last year. We have both adopted new cats since, us a little orange boy, her a little black and white girl, and we supported one another through the sad, bad bits, and the newness. We’ve never met in real life but I am so glad that post was thrown into my feed!

(That pineapple duvet set is really faded now, we bought it when we moved to this house in 2025, and DP threatens it with the bin every time I put it on.)
