Have you ever found a box of abandoned kittens?

Kittens being abandoned in boxes seems to happen pretty regularly but it's never happened to me! I've been handed a box of kittens found under a bridge, but never actually found a box myself.

The kittens were adorable BTW. We flea-treated, combed and wormed them, gave them plenty of good food and let them cause chaos in the house while we found them a rescue space. They went off to an experienced rescue and I spent a day cleaning up.

We found a hidden nest of young feral kittens while out for a walk in a wood once. We left well alone as they seemed healthy and we didn't want to disturb them and risk mum not coming back to her babies.

It was a long way into a fairly thick wood we didn't know well, and I doubt we'd have been able to find them again if we'd tried.

No, that must be an extremely rare occurrence

I know someone who ended up with kittens because a cat gave birth in her garden.

Also, I followed somebody online who allegedly found a kitten in his attic! I couldn't get my head around that one.

The local cat cat rescue has found abandoned kittens in the most bizarre places, including a supermarket bins, you know the massive bins they have outside.

There seems to be lots of stray and feral mother cats giving birth in quiet, sheltered places they think will be safe. Under a car bonnet was one I saw yesterday.

It’s probably just as well I haven’t because I’d feel compelled to keep them 😂.

But my own two rescued cats were found as part of a box of three dumped on the side of a road 😢

I've had a cat (not mine) give birth in my garden and I've twice adopted a stray kitten when they've turned up at my house but no, I've never found a box of kittens. I would probably keep the lot if I did. I do look at boxes/ plastic bags you sometimes see by the side of the road, wishing to see signs they contain kittens, which I suspect is not entirely normal of me.

No. I’d love it though. I remember a story in one of my Bunty comics about a girl who found some kittens and found homes for them (ended up keeping the last IIRC.) I longed for this to happen to me!

My sister found two abandoned kittens in the barn at her riding stables. They kept an eye out for mum for a couple of days but no sign of her. One of the two is now charging around my flat like a creature possessed!

damemaggiescurledupperlip · 14/05/2026 17:35

No, but I have some kitten milk in the cupboard just in case …

smooththecat · 14/05/2026 18:50

No, but I’m waiting for my time.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 14/05/2026 18:53

Yes, they were dumped on my parents' front door step and I found them when I got home from my dance class. I wasn't allowed to keep one (sob)

JohnofWessex · 14/05/2026 19:04

DW found one in the carpenters wood store at work

Both are still going strong

NeverDropYourMooncup · 14/05/2026 19:46

No.

Santa doesn't think I've been very good, even though the shed door is always open and there's a perfect bed in there.

No, but I’m waiting for my time.

Me too

cinnamonmilkandhoney · 14/05/2026 19:55

No but my friends cat brought her one home
she was fast asleep and woke up at 4am to find him dumping a kitten on her bed like “here, you be mother, I’m off out”
woke up her partner like “um WTF” and they kept the kitten

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 14/05/2026 21:09

No - but when I was young my gran was concerned that a cat was going in and out of her shed window, so sent my dad to investigate. He found a mama cat and four kittens. I was thrilled! My gran ended up keeping the mum cat and called her Milly. (They found homes for the kittens, and I wasn’t allowed one which I am still bitter about.) When gran died Milly went to my auntie and lived with her until she was 18.

Our little boy cat was one of two kittens born in a woman’s shed - the mum cat belonged to a neighbour but they didn’t want the kittens. We adopted him from Cats Protection.

Edited

I also do this. I look suspiciously at boxes in lay-bys as I drive past too.

We found a cat in a bag not a box. Bought it home. Contacted a rescue centre. Vowed we weren't keeping it. Long story short we kept it.

MousseMousse · 14/05/2026 23:21

I've adopted a kitten that was abandoned in a cardboard box but didn't find them myself. Also had one turn up on my doorstep too. Sadly no boxes of kittens for me though

Kittkats · 14/05/2026 23:24

Not a box, but 2 were thrown over the wall at work in a bin bag. RSPCA wanted to put them down so I kept them.

3flyingducksarrive · 15/05/2026 01:03

We had next door's cat walk in with 2 kittens and dump them on the spare bed. Then she shouted at us until we followed her to the garage where boxes had fallen down and trapped 3 more kittens! She was really thin with fleas. We weren't sure which flat she came from and they were all in bad shape so I didn't look very hard for the owner.

He came over a few days later about something random, saw the cats and said you have my kittens! We're taking them to Queenstown and letting them loose in the bush on my friend's farm. We did not hand over the cats and I gave him an earful about how bad feral cats are in the NZ bush.

We kept 2 of the kittens and rehomed all the rest.
