How to tell where cat has weed in wood pellet litter?

When we got my kitten we used Breeder' Select paper litter. Worked fine.
He's now almost fully grown and he brings the paper pellets all over the house so I switched recently to wood pellets. I'm mixing the two still but the amount of Breeder Select is reducing.
My question is how do I know where he has urinated in the tray to scoop it out? With the paper pellets it's obvious. As I have added more wood pellets I can't tell. Am I missing something? I did see a small amount of powder but apart from that it's not obvious.
Any advice?

The powder is the weed-on bits. The wood pellets disintegrate into dust when wet,

Thank you!

you can buy a blacklite torch on ebay for about £3 delivered that shines a purple light and it goes yellow-green on bodily fluids. handy when you go round the house in the dark to check for any accidents. or scent marking.

Thanks for all your help on this thread, cat and I got used to the litter.
However, I seem to have developed an allergy to something at home. Symptoms are skin irritation, particularly my face. My face feels prickly all the time too. It's something at home as I went on holidays and it completely disappeared, only to reappear back at home. I've kept my skin routine exactly the same.
I just realised this started at the time I started using the wood pellet litter. Has anyone had something similar happen to them?
Im going to go back to the paper pellets just to see.

I use peashoot/tofu litter, KatKin or other brands. I used wood, then paper, and this stuff is so much better!

YourOnMute · 12/04/2026 13:18

I will try that, thank you

@YourOnMute just to warn you, I bought some wood litter from Asda it was awful, it didn’t turn to dust when wet, I threw the whole bag in the garden waste bin. I get the brand snowflake from Home Bargains, it’s brilliant stuff, and use a colander for sifting, tray gets a full clean every other day.

sorry have just seen your update

You shouldn't need to scoop wood pellet litter. We have used wood pellets for years, we just leave it till it looks more like sawdust that pellets (usually a couple of days), it neitralizes the smell,
then pour the lot into the bin. Wipe it out with clean'n'safe spray then fill it back up.

i dont use pellets but if the pellets only turn to sawdust when peed on…. if you dont muck out the peed bits then the cat will be walking on pee sawdust - and then walking her pee feet on your floors and licking her pee paws, poor creature.

that’s not hygienic. you should be mucking out the pee bits daily. and what a waste to just top the whole lot in the bin. muck it out properly daily so all the days business is removed and dont be lazy.

your poor cat.

If you've never used the pellets, it's hard to visualise, but it's a very different system to other litters. The peed on dust falls to the bottom and the non-peed big bits go to the top (same way as the raisins are all in the last bowl of fruit & fiber), so there's a non pee layer that the cat walks on.

We've got a two layer litter box with a grid that the dust goes through but the clean pellets don't, which separates them even more, but even in our old basic tray, a sake would bring all the clean bits to the top.

For wood pellets get the specially designed sieve litter trays such as Brit Pet or Evohaus - others are available. The sawdust falls down through sieve as they use it. I also shake mine regularly so only the pellets are in the tray part used.

The other option is clumping litter of which there are many. The one I have found best for odour control and lack of tracking is Scoop produced by Katkin. You can usually get a first bag to try discounted by them. Otherwise you can get it cheaper from Zooplus or Amazon. It is expensive though so I tend to mix it with cheaper Tofu stuff.

If you haven’t tried KatKin food it may be more cost effective to get a trial of the food with a discounted bag of scoop. I could PM a referral code (as can other folk that use it).

ah. a two layer tray, didn’t know that apologies. those are great trays. very hygienic. that two tray system (and the clumping stuff in a one tray system) i think are the best.

@TalulahJP totally agree my lad won’t put up with it not being sifted & clean, I note a lack of tax paid on this thread so I’m paying mine !

How to tell where cat has weed in wood pellet litter?
YourOnMute · 14/04/2026 22:13

So I changed out the litter to a tofu type and my reaction has reduced. Might be in my head but I'll stick with it.
