8 month old female kitten litter tray problems - please help a girl out

At the end of my tether with this baby girl. She's absolutely adorable but she is driving me mad with her toilet habits. I have 2 cats, one is just over a year and we have never had any problems with him and the litter tray, then we got his sister in August last year and she has been a nightmare. I don't have a big house or a hallway so I have 2 litter trays in the kitchen, a boxed one next to a cabinet and an open one at the back door which is where she will prefers to use it - when she feels like it. She will often just poo next to it on the floor and now this morning she has snuck into a cupboard on the upstairs landing which is used as an extra wardrobe and she has poo'd in there. I really don't know what to do with her because sometimes she will use the trays and I clean them so regularly because she is a diva and likes a clean tray. I can always tell when she wants the toilet because she digs on the floor near to the cellar steps door where she took to pooing before but I had to clean all that up because it was stinking the house out. I work full time so am out most of the day so can't always catch her. Cat whisperers please help me!

Hello Honey! Gorgeous girl. Hi OP. Could it be that she doesn’t like the particular litter you are using? The litter isn’t high enough in the tray? x

You need more trays about the place, especially if you are out all day and not able to remove pee/other poos straight away.

Where else couId I put one though, I don't want a smelly house and my house is quite small. Should I put one on the landing upstairs where it is pretty quiet? The only thing is my other cat doesn't care which tray he uses so he'll always use all of them leaving her with no option but to either use where he has been or go where she feels like it!

Hmm she does like the litter to be more on the deep side and I switched from non clumping to clumping a couple of months ago which she does prefer but if there is any of her brothers scent she will not use it and I can't stop him from using which ever tray he wants to as he's not fussy at all!

It’s up to you, you say you don’t want a smelly house by having g more trays but atm your cat is not even using the tray so surely that’s far worse?

Very true

I suspect your boycat is scenting every tray and then your girl cat won't use it. So, I think you need a tray somewhere only your girl can get to it. I had exactly this with the same set up a few years ago. Only resolved when she started going outside. She exclusively toilets outside and will not use a tray.

This is exactly what is happening. Hmm I need to find somewhere only she can get to it but god knows where as he will just sit in it looking at her as if to say what you gonna do!!! Buggers they are! I might try one in the bathroom actually as he rarely ventures up there but she does. Thank you!
