Would you let your cat eat it's own sick?

Dcat is a tad greedy and this morning wolfed her wet food down, ate the dry biscuits which were left in the slot of her automatic feeder then promptly.vomited.
Whilst I was getting kitchen roll and cleaning spray she was eating it & most put out that I cleaned it up!
Of course she was then starving 😆 would it have done her any harm to eat it?! It obviously hadn't had time to be digested

I wouldn't let them as such, but it wouldn't worry me if they did - especially if it was just undigested food.

We used to have a former feral who would do that. Utterly gross but never seemed to do him any harm. Obviously if I got to it first I would clear it up but he was often too quick for me!

I wouldn’t present it to her on a silver salver with an accompanying wine list and say: “Bon appetit”… but it’s not going to do her any harm either. I used to have a cat that did similar and once I said to him: “Bob, I’m confused - are you really a cat or are you actually a pig?” The LOOK he gave me!

I can't see it doing any harm. Many birds actually partially digest food then feed it to their chicks.

Boycat would bolt dry food until he threw up, and sometimes I would discover it by hearing Girlcat merrily crunching on the biscuits which looked almost exactly how they did in the bag.

Our cat has a philosophy that it is better to have eaten a treat, thrown it up and eaten it again, than never to have eaten it at all.

I don't really 'let' my cat do things. they just do what they want.

MrsTabithaCat · 02/03/2026 21:00

my cat does it when we’re out and he eats too quickly, barfs it up then re-eats. It’s out of our control but he seems to be fine!

Thanks everyone, glad it's not just my cat who is a bit gross 😻
