New cats joining the family - names!

I've committed to two kittens joining the family, the first cats I've owned for 20 years. They're gorgeous and we are all excited and busy readying the house.

Big problem though. These cats are gorgeous, majestic creatures and my little daughter wants to call hers (I say hers loosely, of course they're my responsibility) Lidl. LIDL. As in the bargain supermarket. Because she loves the doughnuts.

Anyone fluent in 3 year old enough to help here? More name suggestions very welcome!

thank you! Cat tax attached.

Of course the other one would have to be called Aldi

TemporarilyCantDoMyself · 01/03/2026 10:23

I think Doughnut is an excellent name for a cat! So take the direct route rather than via Lidl, could be suggested?
Or what flavour doughnut- caramel? Toffee? Vanilla? Cat called Caramel, Toffee, Milly (for vanilla).
Or does Lily sound close enough to Lidl?
There's definitely a solution to this somewhere @Notmycircusnotmyotter!

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 01/03/2026 10:25

They're both boys so lily wont work but love other suggestions @TemporarilyCantDoMyself

the other one is being called Steve or Bootsie (Spidey's cat). Sigh. They might need outdoor and indoor names.

Love Doughnut. What other foods does she like.
Or they could have Doughnut as a second name. First names caramel or chocolait.

wheredidtheteago · 01/03/2026 10:26

What about Jammy and Doughnut? Or custard and doughnut? Super cute

TemporarilyCantDoMyself · 01/03/2026 10:27

Doughnut and Bootsie! What a duo! 🥰

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 01/03/2026 11:01

I've suggested doughnut.
DD is adamant boy cat1 is called Lidl. I wanted to call him Boris.

We don't pick them up for a few weeks so this might need to be a long game.

I like Lidl it’s cute.

saturdaymorningpurringcat · 01/03/2026 11:07

What about Lidl Boris which can morph into Little Boris - and once he’s a big cat (and your 3 year old is 4), just Boris?

TheForgetfulCat · 01/03/2026 11:15

Having one current cat named after a Transformer (do not give the 8 year old naming privileges either), and a previous one just named Blott (on the Landscape) I may not be the best person to give advice. But I like Lidl. And Steve. Lidl Boris seems a nice compromise.
Theyre not gorgeous majestic Siberian kittens are they? Just if so they will end up looking like total idiots on a regular basis so don’t worry too much

CanISeeYourLicence · 01/03/2026 11:18

Lidl is cute.

FWIW we have a 23 year old cat and an 18 year old cat. But DS1 wants to call our next kitten Russell.

You are welcome.

Russell?
I don't like the 'Brand' he'd be associated with...😬 😂

CanISeeYourLicence · 01/03/2026 11:54

Good point.

DS's other preferred name is 'Smiler'. Which is kind of cute

VamboRools · 01/03/2026 11:54

Our cats have stupid names because we let the kids pick them. I regret their choices. I think boy cats should have names like Arthur, Alan, Gary, Steve. I think Boris is absolutely fine.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 01/03/2026 11:55

Lidl. Ginger, pumpkin.

Easterbunnygettingawrapping · 01/03/2026 11:55

Why not Doughnut and Croissant?

Lol when naming a kitten becomes a long game I think there may be no short games left...
Or succumb to the inevitability of Lidl.
I dunno. 😂

What about lidl as a middle name?

We got 2 boy, girl sibling kittens a year ago, my daughter named the girl Misty, my 9 year old (who has complex needs) named the boy cat Bonkers Bob. However it morphed and became Bobbles. Or bobbley bobsicles or bob bob.. or lord bob...he will come to a variety of these names as long as they include bob.

Misty gets called Misty pickles or Misty moo.

I think cats kind of help choose their own names a bit. But a middle name might be a way of compromising.

Bobbles is registered at the vets and with insurance as Bonkers Bob but the vets has added a 'known as' name to his record 🤣 they were fine about that.

Cat tax of lord bobbles himself.

I had a kitten that I wasn’t sure of his name yet was thinking Henry or Harry. Then someone suggested Felix and that was it, job done.

Toddlerteaplease · 01/03/2026 12:31

Doughnut is very cute. I love food names for pets. However it would be hilarious to have a pair of kittens called Lidl and Aldi. Or Lidl and Waitrose. 😂😂

Gribouille · 01/03/2026 13:18

I once saw a woman calling to her cat 'Come here, Nando!'

I thought 'Kids named that one...'. 🍗😄

smallsilvercloud · 01/03/2026 13:23

Lidl is cute let her name him that, just imagining the vets face whenever he needs to go 😂

AlwaysRightISwear · 01/03/2026 13:25

Marks and Spencer seems more appropriate.

Could Lidl be be Liddell?

AlwaysRightISwear · 01/03/2026 13:27

Boots (w Bootsie as a nickname) would go with Lidl though.

Easterbunnygettingawrapping · 01/03/2026 13:29

Aldi and Asda.
