New kittens very poorly - may need a trigger warning.

We lost our beloved cat in Nov last year to diabetes and sepsis (diabetes undiagnosed and sepsis at the same time) as a massive shock and we’ve really struggled losing him after having him from 8wks old to over 15years. Last week we decided to contact a rescue to enquire about a pair of kittens or young cats to adopt and the next day received a message saying they had a pair of boys for us to see. I went to see them on Friday, asked how healthy they were, what food etc and when they’d be ready to be told I could take them that day.

I brought them home, settled in but they wouldn’t eat, literally anything, we tried leaving out wet and dry, water bowl, the rescue said they didn’t know what they’d eaten as they just give whatever is donated. It was clear by yesterday morning (and 24hrs since they’d eaten) this might be more than the stress of the move so I called my vets who booked an appt later that day, in the meantime Ollie (b&w) had vomited, had diarrhoea and still not eating. Murphy (tabby) had had a little kitten milk and water. Vets immediately saw them and gave Ollie some glucose and fluids and then both some syringed food, gave us the can they had opened to carry on syringing in small amounts at home, said to give it 2 hours and if no improvement to take them to the vet hospital (35mim drive), so at 6 my husband and daughter took Ollie as he was clearly not improving and he didn’t make it. He died just as they arrived 😢

The vet highly suspects feline panleukopenia virus (fpv) and that his brother is likely to have it, and possibly mum. We’ve been feeding Murphy by syringe throughout the night and today but I think we’re losing him too as he’s very sleepy, refused his last syringe and his solid poo has gone to diarrhoea again. I’m absolutely devastated all over again, my children, crying happy tears on Friday are so upset.

Has anyone had any positive FPV stories? I know it’s unlikely for such little kittens (9wks) but I’m clutching at straws before I resign myself to the fact that these babies came only to us for a comfortable last few days. The rescue informed my husband today when he went to pick up some specialist food that they and mum were handed in by a family who had a cat to catch mice, got pregnant and then dumped them all with the rspca (or that’s who found them) They’d had a health check and given a place at the rescue and nothing to imply they were poorly, although first thing our vets asked was did the rescue inform me they were poorly. They say they had no idea and they seemed ok with them.

The rescue said she’d take Murphy back but she wouldn’t be able to nurse him so we’ve refused that as he is comfy with us and we are fighting as hard as we can for him, but if anyone has any tips, or anything I can hang a hope on. We fell for them as soon as we got them home, Friday they seemed very content with us, by Saturday Ollie particularly had rapidly deteriorated, Murphy picked up hugely, solid poos, taking his feeds, grooming himself, but I fear he’s going downhill now too.

Any advice? I’ve added a picture but this is my first actual post so not sure how this works!

Ah I'm so sorry op. What a tragedy.
Hopefully with tlc and meds your boy will make it.

TheDogsPerson · 15/02/2026 19:05

Which rescue was this?

Pointlesssewing · 15/02/2026 19:08

Sorry for your loss. Keep little Murphy as warm as you can, hot water bottle or plastic gloves filled with warm water as hypothermia is a real killer in tiny kittens when poorly. Fingers crossed for his recovery

realbutterplease · 15/02/2026 19:08

It’s near where I live, it’s been open for years and years, has a very good reputation and everyone we know with a cat has rescued from there. I thought we were doing a good thing and would be safer, rather than just getting them from Facebook or something. I don’t want to name as would out me but also they are in contact all the time asking how he is, she was really upset too. They are deep cleaning the enclosure but also never reuse bedding.

Yes he has a hot water bottle under the blanket he is sleeping on, we have either me or husband with him at all times.

You couldn’t be doing any better care. Fingers crossed for you

Sending strength OP, you’re doing an amazing job. 💐

I ask because I have links to lots of rescues, we have fostered animals for years from all over the UK. I may well know it and could see what has happened here. It doesn’t sound right at all for a reputable rescue.

queenofwandss · 15/02/2026 19:18

So sorry OP, how awful for you. I hope you can take some comfort that Ollie’s last days were spent being loved and cared for by your family. No advice for little Murphy but am keeping everything crossed for him.

ahlancs · 15/02/2026 19:40

I know it’s not the same, and I don’t have experience with cats, but we once saved a very poorly puppy by syringe-feeding small amounts of evaporated milk.

We genuinely thought we were losing him, but a very knowledgeable lady in a Facebook group guided us through what to do. The idea was that the sugar content gave him enough energy to keep fighting when he was too weak to eat properly. It honestly made the difference for us — he’s nearly four now, huge and thriving.

Obviously kittens are different, so I’d check with a vet first, but I just wanted to share in case it helps or gives you something to ask about. I really hope your little one pulls through!

realbutterplease · 15/02/2026 20:08

The vet did say we could put a little sugar in his water for him to drink. We have done that and he’s had some. About half an hour ago we gently woke him and let him get up himself, he wandered from his bed and had some water and a small wee. He then took about 2.5ml of the solid food syringed, had a cuddle now back his bed, but he was purring. I’m trying not to get my hopes too high, but this seems good? I’m watching him sleep now and breathing seems good. Hoping little and often helps him through.

Oh bless you. You’re obviously meant to be there for these little boys and you have given them love and care. Wee Ollie died after knowing tenderness and kindness from you and Murphy is being given the best chance of life with your care now. Everything crossed for a positive outcome for him. You’re doing amazing.

NobodyAgrees · 15/02/2026 23:08

Are you aware that these kittens were advertised on pets4homes? The markings an are exactly the same, ages match and it sounds dodgy. The listing is still there. Are you sure where you got them from was actually a reputable rescue? It doesn’t sound right at all that a reputable rescue would do this.

frothycoffee2 · 15/02/2026 23:17

God bless you op. People like you restore my faith in humanity. I really am keeping everything crossed for Murphy but whatever the outcome you could not have done more for both of them.

Yes I’m certain, the rescue has been operating since late 80s, everyone we know with a cat has rescued from there, the vet asked us which rescue we used and agreed they were very good. Do you have a link to the listing? I’ve just had a look and can’t see anything. The rescue told me that they often get cats brought in to them from the rspca. They were in there with their mum who I also saw and had a fuss with, they were definitely mum and kittens. The mum was also rehomed this weekend.

I work for an animal rescue . I'm completely shocked that they let you take these kittens the day you saw them . We do a home visit , do a vet check and vaccination and ask prospective adopters to visit once or twice before they are released . I'm truly sorry this has happened to you and the poor kitten who didn't survive. All you can do is follow the vets advice and hope the kitten improves . Keep kitten warm and quiet in a box or similar . Keeping everything thing crossed for you .

That’s what I thought would happen, she already had my full address to do a check on location, history of prior cat ownership if any, any children, if we’d keep cat indoor and if not what our outside space is like.
Im starting to feel really really awful about this now, this is not a dodgy place at all, I would never have gone there if I hadn’t have checked it first. Maybe I was blindsided by bringing 2 seemingly healthy kittens home, and they appeared to be on Friday, I slept in the same room as them and Ollie was jumping up and slept on me for a bit. It was just too concerning that they still hadn’t eaten and throughout Saturday it went downhill.
But I’m just really really trying to save Murphy now, he had another small feed at 1130 and we’re giving another at 330, he’s comfy in his bed space now so really hoping for a miracle. I’m calling our vets again tomorrow because I need to inform them about Ollie but to get further advice.

Is this a proper rescue with charity status, or just someone doing it at home?

Yes it’s a proper established rescue, established and ran since the late 80s, is a charity. My neighbour fosters for them, the vets have a relationship with them. Everything set up in houses in their grounds, all cats, or family of cats in own heated enclosures.

To update, we woke and fed him at 330, he then decided to wander round the living room and started to play, groomed himself, then back to bed purring loudly. My husband was sleeping in here with him last night and when I went back to bed Murphy came and slept on his chest. He’s had 2 feeds today, big wee, drank water and dozing on my lap whilst I wfh.

I know people seem concerned about the rescue. It is an established charitable rescue, I will deal with how they boys were given to me when everything has calmed down and I’ve got Murphy through the woods. For now though I only ask if anyone has any tips, so far what we are doing seems to be working but any other tips I’m happy to try, he’s still here, he’s started purring (like a tractor acc to my son) and the vets are calling me back this afternoon with some advice for helping him to start initiating his own feeds, but for now I’m doing everything possible to keep this boy alive.

Sounds like he's on the mend to me . You're obviously going to be lovely cat parents to him . Grooming is a good sign of him feeling better. You're doing everything right xx
