Do I need to feed Charlie kitten food?

Charlie has decided he no longer wants to eat chicken wet food. He currently has Scrumbles which is suitable for all ages but the boxes all have chicken pouches in them. I’m looking for an alternative that isn’t too expensive but there’s such a limited range of kitten food. CN I give him adult food? He’s nearly 9 months and weighs 5.2kg

Ours were all on adult food from about six months old, never had any issues.

Edit to add - he has gorgeous eyes! We also have a void with orange eyes and I think they're stunning.

Ooh Charlie is beautiful! I’ve fed my kitten raw food pretty much since I got her as an abandoned stray at around 6 weeks old. I tried so many different types of kitten food and she turned her nose up at them all. Because she was so young I was desperate to get her to eat something and raw beef was what she wanted. Who am I to argue. I think at 9 months, adult food would be fine.

Kitten food is formulated to help them grow well, with added nutrients and minerals, so is best for when they are still growing. Of course "when" to change is so dependant on the breed and individual cat e.g. most large breeds mature later than moggies.

He's quite big already, so may be getting to that stage now but only you can really tell.

There's a (very) few brands out there that do kitten food that don't have chicken flavour in a pack with the others e.g. Animonda Carney do a Beef & Turkey flavour you can buy as just that flavour, Mac's Cat have a large range of non-chicken flavours. Have a poke around on Zooplus and you should be able to find some more there as well as the 2 above.

And of course you can always get a fish flavoured.

Just seen on the cat litter thread that Charlie is eating the corn litter
Gas Lighting little toad !

"Well , CatSlave if you don't find me something that pleases my fine feline palate I will worry the bejeesus out of you by eating the litter . Mwah Ha Ha! "

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 17/01/2026 19:01

That's about right @70isaLimitNotaTarget! I couldn't believe it when I saw the little git trying to eat it!

I made a rod for my own back with Harry by changing his food as soon as he turned up his nose but to be fair to Charlie he'll try anything so I know if he leaves it it's because he really doesn't like it.

Penelope has Amazon life long dry food in chicken or salmon flavour. She loves the fish flavours of thrive. But won’t touch the chicken one, despite looking roast chicken.

We have a development - I put turkey in jelly down for him, he took one look, performed the cover up ritual and walked off. I decided to test a theory so took it up and put down tuna flavour and his head was straight in the bowl. I won't tell him it's actually 76% chicken with 4.8g of tuna! I think the little sod is getting tips from Harry over the Bridge as that's the sort of thing he'd do!

The most annoying thing is he loves his dry food which is, you've guessed it, chicken!

No you really don't. There is very little difference between adult food and kitten food. Kitten food is better for tiny kittens as the chunks are smaller for little mouths. Otherwise we there's not much in it.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 19/01/2026 07:45

Well yesterday's theory didn't work today. I put down salmon last night and tuna this morning and he's not eating them. There's nothing wrong with the little sod as he's devouring his chicken flavour biscuits 🙄

I thought I’d update this. I was determined Charlie was going to eat only good quality food but he had other ideas. He is now happily eating Gourmet Perle, any flavour, jelly or gravy, meat or fish!

This probably makes me a bad owner in some people’s eyes but, as a vet once told me when Harry was being fussy, the best food is the one they’ll eat!
