Do you let your cats out in the snow?

My cats seems to love the snow and spent most of today chasing snowflakes. I do worry it’s a bit cold for them or do you let your decide for themselves? They have full access to come inside if they want.

Its recommended to bring them inside before bed as their fur is not enough for snow. But a little while in the day i think is fine

CleanSkin · 06/01/2026 22:48

They decide for themselves.
(Over a combined total of 50+ years of cat care it’s never occurred to me to keep them in - sorry kitties!)

They are always inside after dark.

Mine gets the choice whether to go out or not, but I only let her out in the day. She very rarely chooses to go out in snow

FuzzyWolf · 06/01/2026 22:54

Yes and they loved it but we didn’t have very much. I would keep in if it was a significant fall or there was deep snowdrifts.

Smartiepants79 · 06/01/2026 22:55

Surely they can decide for themselves if they’re cold and want to come in?

ChloeCannotCanCan · 06/01/2026 22:55

Mine goes out to play in the daytime but she can come inside to lie in front of the fire whenever she wants…

PurpleLovecats · 06/01/2026 22:55

Yes, she’s free to come and go as she wishes.

Beamur · 06/01/2026 22:56

Mine spend as little time as possible outside when it's snowy!

soupyspoon · 06/01/2026 22:57

They're wearing fur coats. Real fur as well

Cant get any warmer than that.

HostaCentral · 06/01/2026 23:09

Let them go in and out as they please. They are not stupid.

FancyCatSlave · 06/01/2026 23:18

Mine do what they like every day of the year. The only rule is in by dark.

My little hunting tiger was out with the sheep 7.30-3 today and didn’t even eat anything before she went (she catches rabbits). Her brother went in and out approx every 30 mins and ate all the pouches because the cold made him absolutely starving whilst complaining about the cold. He is not the brave one! His only catch of the day was a teeny shrew (little twat) which he won’t eat because they taste disgusting apparently. But he does have velvet fur and an epic purr 😻

shellyleppard · 06/01/2026 23:21

Our old cat used to love it and would regularly chase snowballs thrown for her. Current cats are glued to the radiators or the warm beds look

hilariousnamehere · 06/01/2026 23:23

Mine have only seen it a couple of times in their lives (they're 12.5) and insist on going out in it, one tries to eat it while the other one looks at me in utter disgust at this cold stuff on her paws and then they come back in after approximately 23 seconds and that's them done for the day 😂

mondaytosunday · 06/01/2026 23:31

Sure they can decide! My cats like hanging out in the rain. I mean they go and sit on top of the shed like it’s a sunny day. They come in looking like drowned rats but it doesn’t bother them at all.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 06/01/2026 23:56

We have SO much snow - it’s been declared a “state of emergency”. Our cat is furious about it. I took him out to take this photo and he actually howled. We have a ridiculous pantomime multiple times a day where he wants out/sees the snow/hates the snow/shouts at me to put it away/rinse and repeat. He’s so bored and being a right pest. I hope it goes soon.

I did make a snow cat in his honour though.

CatOfHate will not be kept in. Snow, he wants to be out. Fireworks, he wants to be out, and will sit in the window watching them completely unfazed. Rain, he wants to be out.

I withstand the crying and clawing of the carpet as he attempts to tunnel under the door during named storms, Guy Fawkes Night and the weekends either side, and New Year's Eve. The rest of the time, I let him out.

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 07/01/2026 04:10

I let my cat decide what she can cope with. She won't go out in snow or when temp is below freezing. However she loves heavy rain and is currently out in it now as the temp has climbed a bit. Who am I to say thats not ok for her!

Overtheatlantic · 07/01/2026 04:15

Her house, her rules. She was slightly outraged about the millimetre of snow on the ground this morning and went out twice to check she wasn’t imagining it. She finally came in and sullenly used her litter tray.

cucumberpeach · 07/01/2026 04:27

Mine stops wanting to go out at night in this weather and only goes out for short periods during the day. A rare instance of him showing some smarts 😂

DolefullySingingMotherfucka · 07/01/2026 04:43

A black cat stepping daintily in the snow is a beautiful thing.

vanillalattes · 07/01/2026 06:21

Ours have free range to come and go as they please during the day. Only rule is that they’re inside from dusk until dawn.

scalt · 07/01/2026 07:04

Oh yes. They don't go far, but the paw prints show that they don't mind the snow.

Youllnevergetabetterbitofbutteronyourknife · 07/01/2026 07:17

My boy is a Norwegian Forest Cat Ragdoll cross. The Norwegian Forest Cat side is definitely dominant. He loves going out in ALL weathers, he cries if I try to keep him in. They told me he'd be a docile indoor cat. He had other ideas! 😂

GentleSheep · 07/01/2026 07:42

Every cat I've had has decided for himself (all boys!) whether to go out or not. The first time they experience snow is fun, I'd go out with them whilst they figured it out, usually they'd chase the flakes. One of mine hated the cold so he would avoid it. Current moggy isn't fazed at all, he just carries on. He can come in if he wants but he likes to go out regardless.
