Has anyone put a cat flap in a bedroom door? What type did you use?

Our cat likes to decide to sleep in our teenage sons bed at 3 in the morning.
Our son likes to have his door closed so he has to get out of bed to open the door when the cat miaows but by this stage the whole house is woken.

I could put in one of those plastic ones that swing both ways and cover the plastic with some sort of film to protect my sons privacy.

I have also seen where people cut off the bottom corner of the door and then reattach it with a hinge and that acts as a cat flap.

Any thoughts, suggestions or advice appreciated?
TIA

I have trained myself to sleep with my door open a cat's-width!

Just a hole, but with a thickish curtain on the inside for privacy and to prevent draughts?

Why not a normal cat flap? We have have a basic Cat Mate cat flap in a wooden door. Anything opening and shutting won't be silent but it'll be less disruptive than the cat wailing and your son having to get up.

(It should be easy to 'repair' the door later if necessary. Keep the bit you cut out, put it back and seal it it neatly. We did this for an exterior wooden door when we moved house.)
