Feral cat and kitten woes

It’s not been a good day .. we had a feral cat turn up in our stable yard at the end of August - very small and dainty - we thought she was about 6 months or so. Three weeks later she produced one kitten! They’ve been living in our hay barn since then - we’ve been feeding them regularly and thought they were getting a bit tamer as they’d let us stroke them and they’d come up to us for affection and play. They’ve were booked into the local vets today for neutering and microchipping but although we managed to get the kitten in the carrier (with a lot of protest) the mum managed to escape before I could shut the carrier lid, sinking her teeth into my leg as she went. She ran off into the yard and hasn’t come back. Kitten is now back from the vets and poor little thing is now hiding in the barn on his own. Any ideas as to how we can tempt the mum back? We desperately need to get her spayed as the kitten is now weaned and she will be getting pregnant again in no time…

What lovely looking cats! I suspect mum cat will return when she’s hungry. In terms of catching her to bring her to the vet, would a charity be able to lend one of their traps maybe? (Something that you can leave food in as “bait” that shuts when the cat enters it?) I know they are all massively busy but you are doing a good thing here and preventing more kittens appearing.

Will the kitten be okay in a barn post spay? I think I’d keep her inside until she’s healed and recovered. The mum will turn up and you’ll get another chance to get her to the vets.

They look really sweet together.
