Best dry food for female cat with stress Cystitis?

Shufflebumnessie · 08/12/2025 21:29

Our 15/16 year old female cat has recurrent stress induced Cystitis. We've been to the vets several times but it keeps returning. We've obviously tried to reduce the stress factors but currently it seems to be our neighbours building work that might have triggered the latest flare up.
She has plenty of water, wet food & daily Cystophan tablet. Does anyone have a recommendation for a urinary health specific dry food that they've found helps in this situation.
Thanks in advance.

sorry no help on food but assume vet has checked teeth? It was a dental abcess that also caused this in our old lady.

My cat prefers Purina One Urinary health out of all the ones I tried. It does work so I’m sticking with that.

Ouch, I can imagine that must have been very stressful. The vet did look in her mouth but didn't say anything.

I’ve tried everything and the only one that has really helped has been hill’s science plan urinary health. She’s improved to the point of not needing her daily pill. It’s been 4 months now and no symptoms

Royal Canin Urinary. Expensive but my cat had recurrent UTIs and hasnt had one in years. Game changer

Astra53 · 08/12/2025 23:10

Our female cat suffered from stress cystitis. We treated it with Cystophan (available from Amazon) stirred into wet food.

the urinary care Purina One worked wonders for my cat. They should also avoid any fish flavoured foods as it seems to make symptoms worse.

snoopythebeagle · 09/12/2025 08:44

Really if she’s prone to UTI’s then she shouldn’t have dry food at all.

It’s the first one 😊

Thank you 😊

Thank you. I'll have a look at that one too.

She has a daily dose of Cystophan mixed in to her wet food but the vet recommended a urinary specific dry food too (but didn't specific which one!)

Thank you, good to know (although, typically, she prefersfish flavouredwet food!!). I did notice all of the urinary specific foods seem to be chicken flavoured.

Really if she’s prone to UTI’s then she shouldn’t have dry food at all.

Our vet said she was fine to have a urinary specific one to complement her wet food & daily Cystophan, as long as there's water freely available. Unfortunately she won't eat the urinary specific wet food.
