Unwell senior cat - does anyone have any similar experiences?

We have a (we think) 10yo neutered male who we rescued when he was about two - we don’t know much about his history and he could be older than we think he is. He’s slightly arthritic and almost blind but otherwise in good health until recently.

He’s had a couple of minor UTI’s and some constipation this year that all resolved fairly easily but this weekend he’s been in the vets twice as he’s constantly in and out of the litter tray and seems to have issues peeing and pooing.

He has no blockage, no temperature and no impacted poo. He’s on Metacam for his arthritis and has also been given diazepam and antibiotics this weekend as the vet thought he either has a UTI or constipation and has treated both.

His stomach is fine but she thinks he has a swollen kidney and we’re booked for blood tests tomorrow (his last lot in August were clear). Could this just be a really stubborn UTI or could we be looking at something more serious?

He's lovely OP! Sadly, kidney's are often a weakness for cats so fingers crossed that is not anything more sinister. I lost my lovely boy in July to a kidney tumor, was very sudden. I will keep my fingers crossed for you and him.

Thank you! He’s currently curled up on my chest fast asleep which is really unlike him 🥹

❤️ I have no advice to give, only warm wishes and hope that the vet can treat him. He’s a beautiful boy.

Sorry, I also don't have any advice to give, And I sure wish that I did because I would love to be able to give you a little bit of hope or a clue in the right direction which can help You're beautiful cat to feel better. Thank you for taking an older rescue, and doing your best.

Oh what a gorgeous boy.

I'm of no real help either I'm afraid, other than to suggest you make sure he's hydrated. Does he eat wet food or dry?

shellyleppard · 03/12/2025 19:29

He's absolutely gorgeous, hope he's better soon x

keepcooltillafterschool · 04/12/2025 12:40

Are there any updates on your poorly boy?

Hope he's doing ok and that his bloods came back clear.

snoopythebeagle · 04/12/2025 14:31

Thank you to everyone who's asked!

He's much better - turns out he was very constipated - I think because his arthritis makes it painful for him to go to the toilet. He's had laxatives all week and is much happier now - and I'm going to ask for some extra painkillers to give him when he's struggling too.

That's great news, I'm glad it was nothing nasty.

Adding a little water to his wet food can help. Licky Licks are also quite hydrating if he likes a treat.

Thanks for letting us know :)

snoopythebeagle · 04/12/2025 15:03

Thank you! He has wet food every meal and a lick-e-lix everyday. He also has milk (on vets recommendation) - not that he's spoiled or anything 😏

I've honestly never been more relieved to see a cat poo in my life, lol.

Thank you! I'm so relieved he was okay - it was a worrying few days.
